Traders block GT Road in Ghaziabad over alleged police laxity in robbery case

Scores of traders of the Sahibabad steel pipe market held protests Wednesday and blocked the GT Road here alleging police laxity in a case of robbery. Three masked robbers snatched Rs 1.5 lakh from Hitesh, Ravinder and Noopur Jain at gunpoint in the market on Tuesday evening and fired in the air while escaping. There was another case of armed robbery on the same day. Imran Ali, a collection agent of a mobile phone company, was robbed at gunpoint of Rs 93,000 by bike-borne miscreants in the Shalimar Garden area. On Wednesday, Ram Niwas Bansal, president of the pipe market dealers association, accused police of not paying heed towards the security of the market and said the sit-in protest would continue until the goons were arrested. MACT awards over Rs 10 lakh to parents of man mowed down in a road accident

A motor accident claims tribunal (MACT) has awarded over Rs 10 lakh to the parents of a man who was mowed down by a truck in Haryana in 2012. MACT presiding officer Paramjit Singh asked Shriram General Insurance Company Ltd, insurer of the offending vehicle, to pay a total of Rs 10,92,000 as compensation to the parents of Haryana resident Anil Mann. "The existence of the permit and fitness of the offending vehicle at the time of accident has not been proved on record in accordance with law and in absence thereof, the Shriram General Insurance Company Ltd shall be entitled to recover the compensation amount from the driver and the owner of the offending vehicle, in accordance with law," the tribunal said. The tribunal awarded Rs 10,61,424 towards loss of dependency, Rs 15,000 towards loss of estate and Rs 15,000 for funeral expenses incurred by the parents. SC directs IGP of Meerut to supervise probe in Hapur lynching case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed a top police officer of the Meerut range in Uttar Pradesh to supervise the ongoing probe in the Hapur lynching case in which one person was killed and another brutally assaulted allegedly in the name of protecting cows. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed the Uttar Pradesh police to follow the guidelines it issued in a recent judgement on mob lynching and asked the Inspector General of Police to personally supervise the probe in the matter. Samiuddin and 45-year-old Qasim Qureishi were assaulted at Hapur on June 18 by a mob allegedly by cow vigilantes. While Samiuddin survived, Qureishi succumbed to his injuries. "It is directed that the investigation shall be carried out under the supervision of the IGP of Meerut range," the bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said. Bogus HC order: FIR registered against 3 people

The Madras High Court was Wednesday informed that an FIR has been registered against three people in connection with the alleged forgery of High Court orders on a complaint made by a trust in Namakkal district. When the criminal original petition filed by the JKK Rangammal Charitable Trust came up before Justice PN Prakash, the Namakkal police inspector submitted that an FIR has been registered on its complaint. "Apart from criminal prosecution, criminal contempt to be initiated against the accused under the contempt of Courts Act," the judge said. The judge then directed the court registry to place the papers of the case before the Chief Justice to facilitate constitution of a division bench to hear the criminal contempt that has to be initiated against the accused. Muruganandam, Sundaram and Angamuthu had allegedly forged the court stay orders in connection with a lower court eviction orders against them in a trust property dispute.

Vig nabs MGNREGA prog officer accepting Rs 2.57 lakh bribe

Vigilance Investigation Bureau Wednesday caught red-handed a MGNREGA programme officer while accepting a bribe of Rs 2.57 lakh in Bihar's Saharsa district. Vigilance sleuths arrested one Rajiv Ranjan, programme officer,MGNREGA, posted at Sonbarsa block in Saharsa district, while accepting a bribe of Rs 2.57 lakh for releasing muster roll and funds, a department release said. Ranjan was also holding additional charge of programme officer, MGNREGA, of Simri Bakhtiyarpur block in the district. One Rajesh Kumar Yadav, a resident of Sarauja village under Simri Bakhtiyarpur police station, had lodged a complaint with the vigilance bureau regarding demand of bribe by the officer. NALSA's victim compensation scheme be followed in POCSO cases: SC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the National Legal Services Authority's (NALSA) scheme for compensating the victims of sexual assault and acid attacks should be used as guidelines by special courts in awarding compensation to minor victims of sexual abuse till the Centre finalises the rules. The apex court took note of the fact that no rules have been framed by the Centre under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on the basis of which special courts could award compensation to minor victims of cases under the law. A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur, which had earlier accepted the NALSA's 'Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/Other Crimes-2018', said the scheme and the guidelines would be operational across the country from October 2. Bike borne miscreants shot dead a businesswoman in Gaya

Two motorcycle borne miscreants shot dead a businesswoman in Bihar's Gaya district late Tuesday evening, a police officer said Wednesday. Kotwali police station SHO Ajay Kumar said that the deceased has been identified as Radha Kumari (35). She was residing with her Bhabhi and niece in a rented accommodation in Jheelganj area of the town, Kumar said adding that the businesswoman was shot dead by assailants merely 50 meters away from her residence. The incident occurred around 9:45 pm Tuesday evening when she was returning on her scooty home after shutting down her cloth shop located in Gani market area under town police station, the SHO said. Hapur lynching probe to be conducted under Meerut IG: SC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the investigation in the Hapur lynching case will be conducted under the supervision of Meerut's Inspector General of Police (IG).The apex court also said that the IG Meerut will adhere and follow the court's judgment, while conducting the investigation in the case.In August, while hearing the plea of a survivor in the case, the court had asked the IG Meerut to submit a report on the entire incident.Besides seeking Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, the petitioner had also sought transfer of case and subsequent trial outside Uttar Pradesh amid allegations that the police have not recorded his statement. Muzaffarnagar riots: Non-bailable warrants issued against 6 people in murder case

Non-bailable warrants (NBWs) were issued against six people for not appearing in court in connection with a murder case during the Muzaffarnagar riots in 2013, a lawyer said Wednesday. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ankur Sharma has issued non-bailable warrants against Ravinder, Prehlad, Bishan, Tendu, Devender and Jitender and directed police to produce the accused persons before the court on October 4, lawyer Mohsin Zaidi said. According to a complaint filed by Mohammed Waseem, his son Shahnawaz was stabbed by eight people in Kawal village on August 27, 2013. The incident led to widespread tension in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining districts in which more than 60 people were killed.

Five pilgrims killed in road accident in Rajasthan

Five pilgrims returning from Pokhran were killed Wednesday afternoon after their car collided head-on with a truck near Balesar on the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer Highway, police said. All victims were from Gujarat, and were returning after paying obeisance at the shrine of Baba Ramdeo, SHO (Shergarh) Sawai Singh said. The truck carrying apples was trying to overtake another vehicle on the highway when it collided with the car coming from the opposite direction, he said. Four victims died on the spot, Singh said, adding that a fifth one succumbed to injures in a hospital. "The truck coming from Jodhpur hit the car while it was apparently overtaking another vehicle. The collision was so intense that car got stuck in the truck and was dragged a few metres before the truck finally stopped," he said. The victims have been identified as Shankar Bhai, Keshu Bhai, Narayan Bhai, Amrit Bhai and Bharat Bhai, all in their 30s, the SHO said. CDR case: SC allows Maha police to go ahead with investigation against lawyer

The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Maharashtra police to go ahead with its investigation against a lawyer who was accused of illegally possessing call detail records (CDRs) of actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui's wife. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud set aside the Bombay High Court verdict and said it should not have issued a writ of habeas corpus directing the police to produce advocate Rizwan Siddique. It also expunged the observations made by the Bombay High Court in its March 21 judgement against the police officials in the case. The top court said that the high court should not have made scathing observations against the Investigating Officer without giving him opportunity to offer his explanation on affidavit. The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed former Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd promoter Malvinder Singh to deposit with it 3.5 million Singapore dollars, which he obtained by selling his shares in a company in violation of court's direction. Justice Rajiv Shakdher said undoubtedly there has been disobedience of the court's previous directions by Malvinder, who along with his brother Shivinder Singh, was directed not to sell their assets. The court's order came after it was informed by the counsel for Malvinder, who was present in the court, that his 45 lakh equity shares in Religare Healthcare Pvt Ltd were sold in Singapore in April. The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday moved a Delhi court seeking permission to question a UAE-based businessman, arrested by the NIA and currently in judicial custody here in a terror-funding case also involving Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief and 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed. In an application filed before District Judge Poonam A Bamba, the ED said that United Arab Emirates businessmen Naval Kishore Kapoor was required for interrogation and recording of his statement in a money laundering case, being probed by the ED in relation to the present matter. 2 tax officers held for accepting bribe in Rajasthan

Two assistant commercial tax officers were arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 here Wednesday, an officer said. The two accused were identified as Pritam Kumar Sharma and Bhagwan Sahay Meena, posted at Ramganjmandi town in Kota district, said Additional Superintendent of Police Dr Prerana Shekhawat. The duo had earlier demanded a bribe of Rs 40,000 from Vikas Kumar Garg, a proprietor of a firm in Ramganjmandi town, she said, adding that the bribe amount was later settled at Rs 20,000. On August 31, Garg had lodged a complaint against the duo. Based on the complaint, a trap was laid and Pritam Kumar Sharma was caught red-handed by sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau while accepting the bribe, she said. Bhagwan Sahay Meena was also arrested for his involvement in the bribery case, Shekhawat added.

Rally demands removal of Mamit Deputy Commissioner

Major civil societies and political parties Wednesday took out rally in Mizoram's Mamit district demanding the removal of district deputy commissioner for conducting revision of voters list in the six Bru relief camps in Tripura. The rally organised by the Mizoram NGO Coordination Committee and all political parties demanded that deputy commissioner Bhupesh Choudhary be transferred from Mamit district before September 10. NGO Coordination Committee, comprising major civil societies, had earlier objected to the revision of Mizoram's voters list in the relief camps outside the state and demanded that the revision be undertaken after the completion of the repatriation process, scheduled to be held from August 25 to September 25. Police probe to find whether man's death has any link with

The police said they are investigating whether the death of a 25-year-old man whose body was found hanging in Odisha's Cuttack district Wednesday has anything to do with the Momo challenge online game. "We have seized the phone of Umakanta Behera of Umar village, whose body was found hanging from the ceiling of a half constructed building near his house on Wednesday morning," said Mahanga Police Station inspector Jugal Kishore Das. Behera was working as a security guard. Based on the written complaint filed by Behera's father, a case has been registered, he said. "Preliminary investigations revealed that Umakanta was addicted to his smartphone and even before going to sleep on Tuesday night, the family members had seen him hooked to his phone," police said.
