Panel submits report on incidents of lynching to GoM headed by Rajnath

A panel of senior government officers, which deliberated on the possibility of enacting a new law to check incidents of lynching, has submitted its report to a Group of Ministers headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, officials said today. The committee of secretaries, headed by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba, held consultations with a cross-section of society and other stakeholders before submitting its report to the GoM. The GoM will now submit its recommendations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a final decision, a home ministry official said. Though the final outcome of the deliberations of the committee of secretaries is not known immediately, but it is believed they have suggest for tightening the law by inserting clauses in the Indian Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure through parliamentary approval. HC refuses to extend term of MCA administrators

The Bombay High Court today refused to extend the term of the committee of administrators which is overseeing the functioning of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). The cricket body should approach the Supreme Court for all such matters, it said. In April this year, the high court had appointed former Supreme Court judge H L Gokhale and former Bombay High Court judge V M Kanade as administrators of the cricket body. The court had extended the two-member committee's term in June. Later, the Supreme Court extended its term again till September 15. The MCA will have to conduct an election to select its new managing committee by September 15, the apex court had said. The prestigious cricket body moved the high court this month seeking another extension for administrators. A division bench of Justices B R Gavai and M S Karnik today said it cannot intervene, as the apex court has made it clear that it will hear all matters pertaining to cricket bodies and appointment of committees ..

Five held for burglary

Five persons have been arrested in connection with a armed burglary in Kashimira area in Thane district earlier this month, the police said today. Three persons had gained entry into the house of a real estate agent on August 5 by claiming that they are officials of Income Tax and Police departments, police had said. They allegedly tied up the agent and his wife with a rope under "gunpoint" and fled with Rs 3 lakh cash and gold ornaments. A senior district police official said today the alleged mastermind Fiaz Kadar Kazi (47) in the crime is a scrap dealer who had shifted to Pune. After Kazi's arrest on August 26, the police picked Manav Sunil Singh (19), Sohaib Mansur Munshi (19), Salim alias Sahil Firoz Ansari (21) and Imran Munna Ali (25) from Meera Road and Mumbra areas in Thane district. Foreign tourist murder: Police file charge sheet

The Kerala Police today filed a charge sheet in the murder of a Latvian woman tourist at Kovalam, naming two local drug peddlers as the accused. The 77-page charge sheet was filed before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at nearby Neyyattinkara by Assistant Commissioner (Fort) J K Dinil, who led the investigation. The woman had gone missing under mysterious circumstances from Kovalam on March 14. Her highly decomposed and headless body was recovered from a mangrove forest at nearby Thiruvallam on April 21. According to the charge sheet, the two accused persons -- Umesh and Udayan- had lured the Latvian woman, who got stranded in the mangrove forest, by offering her drugs and promising to take her around. The woman fell into a stupor and was later raped, the charge sheet said. After regaining consciousness, she reacted strongly following which she was strangled to death and her body was disposed deliberately to destroy evidence, it said. Delhi HC says it will examine legality of transit remand order of Navlakha

The Delhi High Court today said it will examine the legality of Maharashtra police's action to arrest rights activist Gautam Navlakha and the transit remand order to take him to a Pune court. The court also observed that even if all other arrests in the matter were found to be valid, it would not lend validity to the arrest of Navlakha. The Maharashtra Police wanted to arrest Navlakha and take him to Pune in connection with an FIR lodged there following an event -- 'Elgaar Parishad' (conclave) -- held on December 31 last year that had triggered violence at Koregaon-Bhima village. During the arguments, the court asked the state police why were all the documents not translated from Marathi and handed over to the court and Navlakha or his lawyers. The Mumbai Sessions Court on Wednesday denied to grant remand of Sharad Kalaskar, accused in the Narendra Dabholkar murder case, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).The court asked the central investigation agency to apply for his remand once Kalaskar's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) remand is over. Terror conspiracy case: NIA court sends deputy jail superintendent to 9-day police remand

A special court here today sent Deputy Superintendent of Amphalla Jail Feroz Ahmed Lone, who was arrested by the NIA in an alleged terror conspiracy case, to nine days police remand. He was produced before NIA Special Judge Haq Nawaz by the agency today. The judge said the application moved was "genuine" and remanded the accused to police custody for nine days. "I heard and perused the file as an application for the remand. The prayer made by the NIA seems to be genuine and as such, the present application is allowed," he said. Delay in allotting space for DRT causing loss to Maha govt: HC

The Bombay High Court today said the Centre's delay in allotting space for the Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT) was causing loss to the Maharashtra government while borrowers from banks were benefiting. The DRT, which deals with debt recovery cases involving banks, financial institutions and their customers, is non-functional since three months. The tribunal had been operating out of the Scindia House building in the Ballard Estate area in South Mumbai, but the premises were shutdown on June 2 following a fire. The bar association of the tribunal approached the high court last month, seeking a direction to the Union government to allot appropriate space for the DRT's office. Earlier, the Union government had informed the court that it identified office spaces at the MTNL building in South Mumbai and in the Mumbai Port Trust Area for the DRT. Service rifle of policeman missing in J-K

The service rifle of a constable has gone missing in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police officer said today. An inquiry was ordered and a special investigation team was formed to recover the missing rifle, said Senior Superintendent of Police (Poonch) Rajiv Pandey. "The service rifle of a constable was reported missing and an inquiry has been ordered into the incident," he told PTI. "A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is being constituted to look into the incident and recover the weapon," Pandey said. Sources said the AK-47 rifle along with two loaded magazines belonged to a personal security officer (PSO) of a senior police officer and was reported missing from police lines in the town.

CJM recalls transit remand order, Sudha Bhardwaj to be under house arrest

A local court here today directed that trade unionist and lawyer Sudha Bhardwaj will remain at her residence under Surajkund Police guard till Thursday. Hong Kong professor arrested for murder after body found in suitcase

A University of Hong Kong professor has been arrested on suspicion of killing his wife after police found a body stuffed into a suitcase in his office, the latest grisly murder to transfix the crowded city. Officers discovered the body of a woman, wearing only her underwear and with electric wire around her neck, hidden in a suitcase inside a large wooden box in 53-year-old Cheung Kie-chung's office. Six held for robbing Kushinagar Exp passengers in Maharashtra

Six people have been arrested by the Thane railway police in Maharashtra for allegedly robbing passengers of the Kushinagar Express earlier this month, an official said today. The accused got into the Gorakhpur-bound train when it reached the Kalyan station here on August 19. They allegedly robbed some passengers of their cash and mobile phones at knife-point and jumped out of the train near Kasara, Kalyan railway police's senior inspector Dinakar Pingle said. Based on the passengers' complaints, an offence under IPC section 395 (dacoity) was registered by the police. During the probe, the police arrested the accused from Igatpuri in the neighbouring Nashik district last week. The police recovered Rs 13,450 cash, three mobile phones and four sickles from them, Pingle said. The CCTV footage at the Kasara railway station helped the police in nabbing the accused, he added.

Patent infringement complaint filed by Fiat in US: M&M

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) today said a patent violation complaint has been filed against the home grown utility vehicles major by Fiat Chrysler Automobile US, LLC, at US-based International Trade Commission (ITC). The complaint alleges that certain design features of the details of Mahindra ROXOR infringe the intellectual property rights of Fiat's Jeep design as it was modelled after the original Willys Jeep, M&M said in a regulatory filing. The company believes that the complaint is without merit, it added. In response of the complaint, M&M and its subsidiary Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA) have filed a public interest statement with the ITC. "The company and MANA have commenced a proceeding in the Federal District Court at Michigan to enforce the Grill Design Agreement that the company had executed with Fiat in 2009 and to seek an injunction against Fiat from proceeding with the ITC complaint that has been filed by it," M&M said. Gurdwara in UK damaged in suspected arson attack, one arrested

A Gurdwara in the British city of Leith has been severely damaged in a suspected arson attack following which the police today arrested a 49-year-old man for the "deliberate" act probed as a hate crime. The Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sahib in Leith city, Scotland was set on fire at around 5am yesterday. Heavy security was deployed outside activist Gautam Navlakha's residence following the Delhi High Court order to confine him at his residence after being arrested by the Maharashtra Police for alleged unlawful activities. The Nehru Enclave residence of the activist has been heavily barricaded with no outsider being allowed inside the premises. NGT directs Bihar govt to constitute team to check illegal sand mining in Son, Ganga

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Bihar government to constitute a team to check illegal sand mining being carried out during the Monsoon season in Son and Ganga rivers at Koilwar and Patna. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the Secretary, Mines and Mineral, Bihar to constitute a team comprising an officer of the Mines and Mineral Department, the District Magistrate and the SSP Patna to look into the issue and take action in accordance with law within a month. "According to the applicant, mining during the monsoon is in violation of Sustainable Sand Mining Management Guidelines, 2016, further as laid down in Deepak Kumar vs State of Haryana, no mining is permissible without proper planning and management and Environmental Impact Assessment.
