The National Green Tribunal has directed the Uttarakhand government to check illegal constructions in Haridwar Forest Division and formed an oversight committee for the same, after a plea alleged rampant violations of forest laws. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel formed the oversight committee comprising Justice U C Dhyani, principal chief conservator of forest, Dehradun, Manoj Chandran, IFS, CCF land survey directorate, Dehradun and the district magistrate of Haridwar. "In view of the alleged magnitude of illegal constructions adversely affecting the environment, the matter needs consideration and action by the forest department and the district administration. We also consider it necessary to constitute an oversight committee to ensure execution of this order," the bench said. An alleged dug peddler was arrested today with 180 intoxicant capsules in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, police said. During patrolling in Kathua, 180 Provonspas plus capsules were seized from Roshan alias Gama today, a police officer said. The Enforcement Directorate today said it has attached assets worth Rs 26.65 crore of journalist Upendra Rai in connection with a money laundering and alleged extortion case against him. "The attached assets include high-end cars, flats and investments in mutual funds and bank deposits," the central probe agency said. A provisional order for attachment has been issued against Rai and others under the PMLA, a senior officials said adding the total value of the properties is Rs 26.65 crore. Rai was arrested on June 8 by the Enforcement Directorate under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) at the Tihar Jail here, moments after he secured bail in a Central Bureau of Investigation case related to alleged extortion and dubious financial transactions. A large quantity of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) being transported illegally from Punjab to Gujarat was today recovered from two tankers in the district, police said here today. The value of the seized liquor is approximately Rs 1 crore, SP Bikaner Sawai Singh Godara said. "The trucks were checked at a check post under Nal police station area in the wee hours in which the liquor was recovered, SHO Nal police station Dharm Punia said. The Delhi High Court today granted interim relief to Bhushan Steel's erstwhile promoter Neeraj Singal, arrested by the SFIO for allegedly siphoning off Rs 20 billion funds, by directing his release on bail. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel said Singal would be released from custody subject to his furnishing a personal bond of Rs five lakh and two sureties of Rs two lakh each. The court also declined an oral plea made by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) to stay the operation of the interim order for a week. "Request declined," the bench said, and disposed of the interim application moved on behalf of Singal, represented by advocate Pramod Kumar Dubey, seeking his release from custody. While granting relief, the court imposed several conditions, including that he would not influence witnesses or hamper the investigation. A 32-year-old Bangladeshi journalist, Suborna, was on Tuesday hacked to death by unknown assailants at her home in Pabna city."Some unidentified men rang the doorbell. The Delhi High Court today directed interim release of Bhushan Steel's ex-promoter Neeraj Singal, arrested by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) for allegedly siphoning off Rs 20 billion funds. The Delhi High Court today said it will hear at 2:15 pm the plea of rights activists Gautam Navlakha, arrested for alleged unlawful activities, after the Maharashtra Police submitted that translated documents of the case were not ready. A Guatemalan asylum seeker has filed a claim against US authorities for the "wrongful death" of her daughter, who died six weeks after their detention by US immigration police, her attorneys said. Clothing retailer Fabindia has informed the Bombay High Court that it does not intend to use the term 'khadi' for its products. Fabindia submitted an undertaking on August 27 before a single bench of Justice S J Kathawalla which was hearing an application filed by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). The KVIC had approached the high court in June this year against Fabindia for illegally using its trademark "charkha" (spinning wheel) and selling the apparel with the khadi tag. In its suit, the KVIC had sought damages to the tune of Rs 525 crore from Fabindia. In a separate application, the KVIC had also sought an injunction order to be passed by the court, prohibiting Fabindia from using the term khadi to sell its products. "Fabindia has filed a detailed affidavit challenging registration of the word 'khadi' by the KVIC.
