An Indian-origin man in the UK has been fined and banned from driving for 17 months after his angry girlfriend called police for drunk driving. Kamaljit Sagoo had been out celebrating his 44th birthday with his friend on June 18 when the couple got into a fight. He jumped into his car to drive to a nearby store to buy cigarette paper when she called the police and informed them that he was drunk behind the wheel of his car. "Unusually, he has been reported by his partner for driving while drunk and he was later found by police in the driver's seat of his car," prosecutor Lorna Rimell told North Tyneside Magistrates' Court in north-east England. "He then failed a roadside breath test," she said. According to local media reports, Sagoo blew 61 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath when the legal limit in the UK is 35 microgrammes. An elderly man was beaten to death allegedly by his son over a land dispute in Odisha's Jajpur district, police said today. Both the son and father attacked each other with wooden sticks following heated arguments over some land issue at Palatapur village yesterday, said Prasant Kumar Mallha, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Jajpur. Hearing commotion, locals rushed to the spot, rescued both father and son and admitted them to the Community Health Centre at Mangalpur, he said. While the man, identified as Radheshayam Behera (80), succumbed to his injuries at the hospital his son, Pramod Behera, was undergoing treatment, he said. Police have sent the body to the district head quarters hospital for post mortem. "We have arrested the accused under section 302 of IPC and seized the weapon used in the crime," the SDPO said, adding further investigation is on. Radheshyam had a long standing dispute with Pramod over a piece of land located in the same village, police said.
A six-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a cab driver of a private school in southwest Delhi's Palam village, police said today. The incident was reported to the police yesterday and a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Devender Arya said. The accused driver has been arrested, he said, adding the matter is being investigated. Earlier this month, a seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an electrician at a New Delhi Municipal Council school following which he was arrested.
A Thane court has taken cognisance of a complaint against a BJP legislator, an IAS officer and seven others for allegedly registering a village cooperative society by forging documents. The Ulhasnagar magistrate court here took cognisance of the complaint filed by one Prabhu Govind Patil, who alleged that he too was unauthorisedly made a member of the society by the accused, who forged his signature. Magistrate Shailaja Pandey recently took note of the complaint and the supporting documents submitted by Patil and ordered for issuance of process against the nine people, saying based on the first impression (prima facie), the complaint buttresses the allegations. The Supreme Court today reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions seeking disqualification of lawmakers even before their conviction in criminal cases to curb criminalisation of politics in the country. A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra reserved the judgement after the parties including the Election Commission and the Central government concluded their arguments on the clutch of petitions. Former union minister P Chidambaram today moved a Delhi court alleging that the CBI is leaking parts of the charge sheet in the Aircel-Maxis case to the media "to sensationalise" the issue and "make mockery of judicial process". Special Judge O P Saini issued notice to the agency and sought its response by October 8. The Jharkhand High Court has approved the anticipatory bail petitions of three persons on the condition that they deposit money in the Kerala Chief Minister's Relief Fund. A bench of Justice A B Singh yesterday observed that much has to be done in Kerala following the devastation caused by floods. Singh granted anticipatory bail to one Utpal Ray in a cheating and forgery case on the condition that he would deposit Rs 7,000 in the relief fund. Bail applications of fraud accused Dhaneswar Mandal and Sambhu Mandal were also similarly admitted at the cost of Rs 5,000 each. The court said the petitioners have to submit proof of the deposits made to the fund. The owner and the manager of an automobile service centre here in Maharashtra have been booked for alleged negligence leading to the death of a worker at their workshop last year, police said today. The victim, Sujit Yadav (23), was cleaning a car on June 12, 2017 when he got an electric shock from the water pipe at the service centre located in the city's Manpada area, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. He was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment on July 2 last year, she said. Another 22-year-old worker was also injured in the mishap and admitted to another hospital, Narkar said. Doctors who attended Yadav declared that he died due to electrocution, she said. The police later approached the Maharashtra State Electricity Board and its officials informed them that there was power leakage from the motor of the pressure water pipe in the workshop. The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea of journalist Upendra Rai seeking to restrain Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer Rajeshwar Singh from conducting probe against him in a graft case. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said the cases lodged against Rai have nothing to do with the 2G case pending before it and his plea is not maintainable in the present set of proceedings. "We are dismissing it as not maintainable. It is not the subject matter of the present proceedings," the bench said. Senior advocate Raju Ramachandran, appearing for Rai, said since he had made certain allegations against Singh, the ED and the CBI have lodged cases against him. A 17-year-old boy allegedly killed his elder sister as he was apparently upset with her for mingling with other boys in their locality here in Maharashtra, police said today. The accused was angry with his 19-year-old sister for being friendly with boys in their locality in Valiv town here. Some neighbours had also taunted his family over the woman's conduct, police inspector Bharat Jadhav said. The boy had earlier reprimanded his sister and even beaten her over the issue, Jadhav said. Yesterday, when their parents went out for work, the boy allegedly strangled his sister to death with a 'dupatta' (a long narrow piece of cloth worn around the neck), he said. The Valiv police later nabbed the boy and registered a case against him under IPC section 302 (murder), he said. The body was sent for postmortem, Jadhav said, adding that a probe was on into the incident.

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly sexual harassed by a youth, who also tore her clothes, when she was going to a shop here, police said today. The incident took place last evening. In his complaint, the girl's father has alleged that the youth tore her clothes after she opposed him, Station House Officer, Bhopa, VP Yadav said. The youth identified as Sachin is at large, he said, adding that a case was registered and a search launched to nab the accused person. In another incident, a woman here has alleged that she was sexually harassed by two youths, who also threatened to throw acid on her. A driver of a school bus, which had 34 children on board, was shot at by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said today. The incident took place yesterday near Jatbhaneda village. The bus was carrying the children from Maharaja Surajmal Public School to their homes, Additional Superintendent of Police Shalok Kumar said. The driver was admitted to a local hospital in serious condition, he said. The bus was stopped by four persons on two motorcycles and when the driver got down, they shot at him, the officer said. Police are trying to identify the assailants. The cause behind the attack is not known, Kumar said.
The Crime Branch of Aurangabad Police have arrested nine people, who were planning to set free criminal Imran Mehendi from police custody, after he was produced before a district court on Monday.Mehendi, along with seven others, was handed life imprisonment for murdering NCP corporator Salim Qureshi in March 2012.The police got a tip of their plan few days back and accordingly a team laid a trap in Naregaon locality on the outskirts of the city, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepali Ghadge Dhate.The plan was made by Mehendi's friends Habib Khaled Mohammed aka Khaled Chaus and Mohammed Shoeb Mohammed Sadiq, the police said."In order to free Mehendi, they had called seven criminals from Madhya Pradesh.
