Ban Sanatan Sanstha if needed: Ramdas Athawale

Union Minister of State (MoS) for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale on Monday said that "if needed" Hindu right-wing group Sanatan Sanstha should be "completely banned.""Sanatan Sanstha will have to stop its violent activities. If it was involved in the murders of Dr Narendra Dabholkar and Gauri Lankesh then action needs to be taken against it. The culprits should be nabbed as soon as possible. If needed, the organisation should be completely banned," Athawale said at a press conference here.Athawale's statement comes after Sanatan Sanstha earlier in the day denied reports of any involvement in the Dabholkar and Lankesh death cases."The nine people recently arrested don't belong to Sanathan Sanstha, which is being targeted unnecessarily in these circumstances. Out of the nine people, five are those, whose names we have come to know through media only. There are different types of people who are referred to as Sanathan workers and I want to clear that none of the arrested .

Director of Noida-based builder's firm arrested cheating buyers

The director of a private builder's firm in Noida was arrested for allegedly cheating buyers, police said today. Amit Somal, director of the Premia Projects Private Limited, was arrested in a joint operation by the teams of Crime Branch and Sector 20 police station, they said. Somal, who lives in Dwarka, New Delhi, was wanted for some time over complaints of cheating from buyers, the police said in a statement late tonight. He has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust), the police said. He would be remanded in judicial custody, they added. No other details were available immediately.

Man arrested in doctor's kidnapping by cab driver

A 28-year-old man, carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, was arrested today for involvement in kidnapping of a doctor by an Ola cab driver in East Delhi's Preet Vihar last year, police said. Harsh alias Gaurab Sharma is the eight accused to have been arrested in the case, they said. On July 7, 2017, Dr Shrikant Gaur of Metro Hospital went missing from Preet Vihar, following which a case was registered. He had boarded an Ola cab and went untraced soon after. Later, the kidnappers demanded Rs five crore from cab aggregator Ola for his release. Police rescued the doctor nearly 13 days after he went missing. Seven men were arrested, including the main accused, but Harsh alias Gaurav Sharma remained at large and subsequently, a reward of Rs 50,000 was decalred on his arrest, the police said. Srinagar hotel case: Army court holds Major Gogoi guilty

The Indian Army's Court of Inquiry (CoI) on Monday found Major Leetul Gogoi guilty in the Srinagar hotel altercation case and came to a conclusion that the facts on the ground are against him.The CoI also ordered to initiate a disciplinary action against Major Gogoi.The court held him accountable for violating the official Army policy of fraternising with a local woman and for being absent from the place of duty while on active service in an operational area.However, according to an officer who served in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) branch of the Army, there is still a long way before Major Gogoi is being held guilty. Now, Noida SP Crime to probe the ADM, ex-colonel spat

The probe into a spat between an additional district magistrate (ADM) and a retired Army colonel here has been handed over to the superintendent of police (crime), officials said today. The ADM was suspended by the Uttar Pradesh government on August 24 following the altercation involving the Army veteran over an illegal construction outside his house in Sector 29 of the city. The illegal construction by the ADM was razed by the Noida Authority on August 29, days after a complaint was lodged by his neighbour Colonel (Retired) Rakesh Pratap Singh Chauhan. "Now SP (Crime) Ashok Kumar Singh is investigating the case," a police spokesperson said. The case came to light on August 14 when Chauhan was arrested and jailed for a few days over a complaint by the ADM's wife, who accused the Army veteran of molestation and hurling casteist slurs. Special court awards life sentence to two in 2007 court blast case

A special court today sentenced two men to life imprisonment and imposed a heavy fine on them in connection with the 2007 court blasts case in the Uttar Pradesh capital. Special Judge Babita Rani had declared Tariq Kajmi and Mohd Akhtar guilty on Thursday and fixed today for awarding the quantum of punishment. She sentenced them to life imprisonment today and imposed a fine of Rs 5.10 lakh each. The court was conducting the trial in district jail, Lucknow. Both the accused have already been in jail for 11 years. Pronouncing the verdict, the court observed the accused had not only attacked the judiciary but also conspired to wage war against the country, which were serious offences. MP HC dismisses PIL against land allotment to Ramdev's Patanjali

The Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court today dismissed a PIL seeking cancellation of allotment of land by the state government to Yoga guru Ramdev's Patanjali Ayurveda. The 40-acre plot of land in the Pithampur industrial area of Dhar district was allotted to the company at Rs 25 lakh per acre in September 2016 and the firm had proposed to invest Rs 500 crore to set up a food processing unit there. A bench of Justices P K Jaiswal and Sunil Kumar today rejected the PIL, filed by local social worker Tapan Bhattacharya, and fined him Rs 10,000 for submitting a baseless petition. The court also ordered that the fine, after realisation, should be deposited in the relief fund for flood-hit Kerala. In his PIL, Bhattacharya had alleged that the land was given at cheap rates to provide illegal benefits to Patanjali. Woman beats constable in Ghaziabad

A woman beat up a police constable here today after he slapped her brother for allegedly altercating with officials at a bank during Aadhaar enrollment, police said. The incident took place at a SBI branch in Balram Nagar colony, Loni, they said, adding that two persons were arrested in this connection after a purported video clip of the episode went viral on social media. "Imran was asked to produce a token for Aadhaar enrollment. When he refused, the official concerned denied to proceed. An argument broke out between them and soon after the official called policeman deployed there. Nine held for plotting criminal's escape from Maha court

The Aurangabad Police have foiled a plan to release dreaded criminal Imran Mehendi from police custody when he was to be produced before a court here for a hearing today, a senior official said toady. Police arrested nine persons and seized a pistol, seven bullets and a jeep, before they could put their plan into action on August 25. Seven staffers of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) have been dismissed from service after they were found guilty of indecent behaviour in a departmental enquiry, an official said today. A court here today stayed proceedings against Aam Aadmi Party lawmaker Alka Lamba in a case of allegedly trespassing and vandalising a shop in the city and obstructing the police from performing their duty in 2015. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal said there was only one charge -- 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) -- made out against Lamba which did not call for prosecution, Advocate Mohd Irshad, who is appearing for the AAP leader, said. 6 drug peddlers held with poppy husk, ganja

Six people were arrested from different places here and 4.6 kg of poppy husk and ganja were seized from them, police said today. SSP Vaibhav Krishna said Masuri town police arrested two persons early today with 2.3 kg poppy husk, and during questioning, the accused, Naeem and Mahboob of Dasna town, confessed that they were going to supply it in NCR area. 15-yr-old girl killed after being hit by Delhi Jal Board tanker

One girl was killed and her cousin injured after being run over by a Delhi Jal Board water tanker in west Delhi's Janakpuri today while they were going to school, police said. The incident occurred in front of Mata Chanan Devi Hospital and the water tanker driver, 46-year-old Dharmender, was arrested, they said. The DJB water tanker was being driven from Bindapur at a very high speed and while taking a u-turn at the Janakpuri trafic signal, it ran over the two girls who were crossing the road on way to school, the police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Kumar said the injured girls were taken to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital, where Nagma (15) declared brought dead, while her cousin Samreen (13) was undergoing treatment. 'Couple abducted 3 days after seeking protection from HC'

The police today rescued a tribal youth from the alleged captivity of the relatives of a woman with whom he had eloped and married. The youth was rescued from a desolate place in Kot Ponnu village of Kathua district after several video clips showing him being tortured by his alleged captors went viral on the social media, the police said today. Shoukat Ali, a native of Manyari village in Kathua district, had gone missing with the woman of his tribe on August 16, three days after they had married in a court and had approached the Jammu and Kashmir High Court saying that they had married and needed its protection. Soon after the couple's disappearance, several videos had surfaced on social media purportedly showing the youth being tortured by his wife's relatives, the police said.
