Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police registered cases against three persons for allegedly running a fake job racket in the Kashmir valley here, an official said today. The accused were identified as Mahmood Khan, Mukesh Kumar and Ram Lakhan, all from New Delhi. "Crime Branch received a communication from Cyber Crime Cell, Kashmir, according to which complainants from various districts of Kashmir were swindled of huge sums of money with the promise of a job in Airport Authority of India," an official spokesman said. During the Cyber Crime Cell's preliminary verification, it was found that the complainants had deposited Rs 5.88 lakh in four accounts of State Bank of India in various branches in Delhi and Noida. A Moscow court today gave a 30-day jail sentence to Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny over an unsanctioned protest earlier this year, just days before another planned political rally. Judge Alexei Stekliyev of the Tverskoy District Court in the capital ruled that Navalny had repeatedly violated Russian law with a call for a mass protest in January, an AFP correspondent in the courtroom reported. Navalny was detained on Saturday evening outside his home in Moscow. His charges pertain to an unsanctioned protest he organised on January 28, violating Russia's strict laws which forbid any public event without city hall's authorisation. Three persons were arrested today in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district after a purported video showing them carry the severed head of a cow went viral on social media, police said. In the video, Mujahid Ali, Intezar and Zakir Ahmed, were purportedly seen moving around with the head of a slaughtered cow in the lanes of Rampur village under the Khudaganj police station, SP (City) Dinesh Tripathi said. A local BJP leader, Rajiv Kumar Singh, had lodged an FIR against them yesterday, following which the trio was arrested, Tripathi said.

A 65-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by a POCSO court here today for abducting and raping a minor girl. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs one lakh over the convict. The judgment came in a record five working days after the charge sheet in the matter was submitted on August 20, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) at the Kota POCSO Court Kamal Kant Sharma said. Judge Girish Kumar Agrawal sentenced Pappu alias Hariram, a resident of Chawani Ramchandrapura here to life imprisonment for abducting and raping a 10-year-old girl, the SPP said. The girl was attending her mother at a hospital on October 13, 2017 when the accused took her on pretext of providing her money. He took her to Lakheri town where he raped her near a railway station and later left her. The victim somehow managed to reach Kota railway station where she narrated the incident to police. A case was lodged the next day in Nayapura police station in Kota under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) .
The Delhi High Court said today that on the face of it, it does not find "frivolous" the plea by Bhushan Steel's erstwhile promoter Neeraj Singal, arrested for allegedly siphoning off funds worth over Rs 20 billion, against the powers of arrest of the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO). "Prima facie we do not think the challenge is frivolous," a bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel said while reserving its decision on Singal's interim application for release from judicial custody. The court said it will pronounce its decision on Singal's interim application on August 29. The National Green Tribunal has directed the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to check burning of tyres and close illegal denting and painting shops in northeast Delhi. Army sources said disciplinary action has been recommended against Maj. Gogoi after an Army court of inquiry (CoI), conducted by a brigadier, indicted him for the Srinagar hotel incident on May 23. The findings of the CoI have been vetted by the General Officer Commanding of the 15 Corps, based in Srinagar. Maj. A Class 9 student was allegedly raped by three men who kidnapped her from Dankaur area of Gautam Buddh Nagar in a car today, police said. The incident took place near Roshanpur village this morning and two of the accused have been arrested, they said. "The girl was on her way to relieve herself outside the village when the three accused kidnapped her and raped her in the car," Superintendent of Police (Rural) Aashish Shrivastava said. The Supreme Court today directed the registries of all high courts to put on their respective websites that they have set up anti-sexual harassment committees in the HCs and their subordinate district courts across the country. The Madras High Court today dismissed a PIL seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu government to ensure safety measures as per rules in all state run buses and to provide adequate facilities at bus terminals. A non-resident Indian (NRI) serving a jail term in a UK jail for killing his wife over eight years ago is to be deported to India to serve the remainder of his murder sentence in Punjab. Harpreet Aulakh was sentenced to a minimum of 28 years in London in December 2010 for ordering the murder of his wife, Geeta Aulakh, after she asked for a divorce. A suspected gangster allegedly involved in murder and kidnapping cases was arrested in south Delhi here, the police said today. Vikas Singh, a native of Bihar, was arrested on August 25 on the basis of a tip-off, they said, adding that he was planning to kill a Ghaziabad-based businessman. He, along with his associates, had allegedly killed a fellow gangster in Bihar in 2017 and kidnapped a Nepali businessman in 2016, police said. A trap was laid after police learnt that Vikas Singh was coming to meet someone outside the Sangam Cinema in R K Puram here, they said, adding that subsequently he was nabbed. Four persons were arrested today in connection with a robbery-cum-murder case that took place in a nearby village earlier this month, police said. With the arrest of four of the eight members involved in the crime, police claimed to have solved the case that took place on the intervening night of August 11-12 in Begumpur village. Apart from looting gold and cash, the accused had brutally murdered the house owner Joga Singh (60) and severely injured his wife Kashmir Kaur and son Mandeep Kumar. A city civil court today dismissed the Gujarat government's application seeking cancellation of Patidar quota leader Hardik Patel's anticipatory bail. Patel was granted anticipatory bail in April last year in a case of rioting outside a BJP corporator's house, with the court laying down that he would not enter the Ramol police station limits where the incident happened.
