Two undertrials lodged at the Thane Central Prison in Maharashtra allegedly beat up two jail officials during an enquiry into a harassment complaint against one of the inmates, a police official said today. A jail inmate had complained to the prison authorities that another inmate, Ashish Nair, was harassing him. Jailer Satish Mane called Nair to the prison's circle office to enquire into the complaint on Saturday when the latter allegedly beat him, the official said. When another jailer present in the office tried to save Mane, Nair beat him also and broke the glass of a window in the premises, he said. As Nair was being taken out of the office, another undertrial, identified as Abhinav Singh, came out of his cell and allegedly beat the two jailers, he said. Senior prison officials rushed to the scene and took away the two undertrials, the police said. Seven notorious criminals have been arrested with illegal weapons from different locations in the city, a police officer said today. Based on a tip-off, a police team arrested Chhitarmal Kaatwa (30) late yesterday night from Phulera police station limits along with an illegal pistol and two live cartridges, DCP (West) Ashok Kumar Gupta said. The accused confessed to his role in arms smuggling and supply, he added. Based on the information provided by Kaatwa, police teams arrested Mukesh Jat (28), Mohan Singh (30), Pawan (36), Manohar Mehra (35), Jitendra Kumar Kumawat (42) and Harlal Jat (30) from different locations within the Kardhani police station limits, Gupta said. Four illegal pistols, two country-made weapons and three live cartridges were recovered from the accused persons, he said. The accused have been booked under the Arms Act. All of them have a criminal record and have cases of murder, loot and vehicle theft registered against them, the DCP said.
Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Purohit, one of the main accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, on Monday moved the Supreme Court and sought a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the matter pertaining to his alleged abduction and torture by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in 2008.Purohit was arrested for allegedly masterminding the blasts in Malegaon in 2008.In April, the apex court also allowed Purohit to challenge the charges framed against him.Purohit, after spending nine years in jail, was granted a conditional bail by the top court in August last year.According to media reports, in June Purohit revealed that he was beaten, abused and tortured while he was in custody of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).Purohit, in a letter, claimed that he was threatened to own up to a crime which he never committed.The Malegaon blasts, that took place on September 29, 2008, killed six people and injured several others.
Pakistan's former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur appeared before a joint investigation team of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) today in Islamabad to record their statement in a Rs 35 billion money laundering and fake bank accounts case. In July, the Supreme Court listed 63-year-old Zardari and his sister as beneficiaries in an alleged scam "running into billions of rupees" that led to the arrest of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman's close aide and famous banker Hussain Lawai. The FIA issued notices on Saturday to the former president and his sister to appear at the agency's headquarters in Islamabad on Monday. Two more accused in the 2002 Godhra train carnage incident were awarded life imprisonment by a special SIT court here today, taking the total number of convictions in the case to 33. Fifty-nine 'karsevaks' were killed in the Godhra train burning incident of February 27, 2002, triggering the worst communal riots in the history of Gujarat in which over 1,000 people, mostly belonging to the minority community, were killed. Special judge H C Vora convicted Farooq Bhana and Imran Sheru and awarded them life sentence after the prosecution established their role as conspirators in the burning of two coaches of the Sabarmati Express. The court also acquitted three other accused, identified as Hussain Suleman Mohan, Kasam Bhamedi and Faruk Dhantiya. A man was booked for allegedly flashing at minor girls residing in a building opposite his in Mumbra locality of Maharashtra's Thane district, police said today. A Mumbra police official said that accused Mohammad Ansari (50) had flashed at these girls, in the age group of 8-9 years, from the window of his residence yesterday afternoon. The children complained to their parents who then approached police, he said. Ansari, who is unemployed, is currently absconding and efforts were on to nab him, the official said. A case has been registered against him for stalking and other offences under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said.

Three auto lifters were arrested and 29 stolen motorcycles were recovered here, police said today. The gang was busted by a police team led by Station House Officer at Mohanganj Police Station D K Singh and Sub Inspector Raj Keshar Singh, Superintendent of Police Anurag Ary said. The accused were identified as Ramesh Passi, Kamruddin and Subhash Chandra. A former CPI(ML) worker was today shot dead by unidentified miscreants at Nadhi village in Bhojpur district, a police officer said. Superintendent of Police Awakash Kumar said that the deceased, identified as 45-year old Ramakant Ram, was an accused in the killing of two persons associated with the Ranvir Sena in 2001. CPI(ML) MLA from Tarari Sudama Prasad said, Ram was attacked when he stepped outside his house for answering nature's call. The miscreants opened fire at him killing him on the spot, the police officer said. Raids were on to nab the culprits, he said. Angry over the incident, local residents and party workers were not allowing the police personnel to take away the body for post-mortem examination, police sources said.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted a progress report on the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal case to the Patna High Court today in a sealed cover. CBI counsel Sanjay Kumar submitted the report on the status of the progress of the case and transfer of CBI's SP-rank officer, who was part of the probe team in the case. The investigating agency submitted the report before a bench comprising Chief Justice Mukesh R Shah and Justice Ravi Ranjan in compliance of its order passed on the previous hearing on two counts. Kumar, along with deputy inspector general CBI, Patna, who was also present in the court, submitting the report said that it comprised two aspects -- the progress report of the investigation and transfer of its SP J P Mishra. A fruit vendor has been arrested for allegedly sodomising a five-year-old boy in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said today. The 20-year-old accused took the boy from outside his house in Nallasopara, about 45 kilometres from here, at around 4pm yesterday and sexually assaulted him at an isolated place in Kazi Chawl in Vakanpada, said assistant inspector S S Chowdhary of Valiv police station. The child told his parents about the incident following which they filed a compliant and police arrested the accused from the same locality last evening, he said. The official said that an offence was registered against the accused for unnatural sex under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
A 15-year-old girl was killed while her cousin sister injured after they were hit by a tanker truck in west Delhi's Janakpuri area this morning, police said today. The accident occurred near Mata Chanan Devi Hospital, they said. The deceased was identified as Nagma. Her cousin sister, who is also aged 15, is undergoing treatment at a city hospital, they said. The Indian Army's Court of Inquiry (CoI) on Monday ordered to initiate disciplinary action against Major Leetul Gogoi in the Srinagar hotel altercation case.Major Gogoi has been prima facie found guilty for violating the official Army policy on fraternising with a local woman and for being absent from the place of duty while on active service in an operational area.Major Gogoi was detained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police from a hotel in Srinagar on May 23 following an altercation.The argument erupted when major Gogoi was allegedly trying to enter the hotel with a woman and the hotel staff refused to let them in.On 26 May, Chief of Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat said that Major Gogoi would be given "exemplary punishment", if found guilty.Major Gogoi first made headlines in April last year when he tied a civilian to the bonnet of his vehicle as a "human shield" and drove through Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam.
A Delhi court on Monday acquitted two persons facing trial for their alleged involvement in an Indian Airlines plane hijacking in 1981.The Patiala House court acquitted Satnam Singh and Tajinder Pal Singh who were accused of hijacking an Indian Airlines Boeing 737. The Delhi-Srinagar bound plane carrying over 100 passengers was hijacked mid-air and diverted to Lahore in Pakistan on September 29, 1981.Both hijackers were tried on the charges of waging of war against state in the case. After they served life imprisonment punishment, they moved to the United States and Canada, respectively. They were later deported to India in the year 1998 and 1999.Both had sought acquittal from the court during trial on the ground of double jeopardy as both had already served life sentence in Pakistan for the alleged crime.The plane was hijacked by at least five Sikh hijackers.
A Delhi court today acquitted two men, accused of hijacking a New Delhi-Srinagar Indian Airlines flight and forcing it to land in Pakistan in 1981. Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Pandey granted the relief to Tajinder Pal Singh and Satnam Singh. According to the prosecution, on September 29, 1981, the two allegedly hijacked an Indian Airlines flight from New Delhi en route to Srinagar via Amritsar and forced it to land in Lahore, Pakistan, where they were arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. Both were deported in 2000 from Pakistan after serving their sentence. They later sought their discharge from the case but a sessions court dismissed their plea. In 2011, Delhi Police had charged them under various sections of the IPC - 121 (waging war against the government of India), 121A (conspiring to commit certain offences against the state), 124A (sedition) and 120B (criminal conspiracy). The Supreme Court today sought response of the Centre and WhatsApp on a plea alleging that the social media giant does not comply with the provision of appointing a grievance officer and other laws of India. A bench of Justices R F Nariman and Indu Malhotra issued notice to the Centre and the messaging platform on a plea filed by an organisation, Centre for Accountability and Systemic Change, to restrain the social media giant from proceeding with its payment systems unless it fully complies with provisions of the Reserve Bank of India. The top court has asked the parties to file the reply within four weeks.
Three members of a family were killed after their bike was hit by an unidentified vehicle in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district, police said today. The deceased were identified as Ashok Regar (17), Rakesh Regar (20) and Chandra Prakash Regar (24), they said. The three were killed after an unidentified vehicle hit them near Piploond crossing late last night, Station House Officer at Jahajpur Police Station Panna Lal said. Bangladeshi cricketer Mosaddek Hossain Saikat's wife has accused him of driving her out of their home and torturing her over dowry, a media report said today. Mosaddek, 22, who married his cousin Sharmin Samira Usha six years ago, has been included in the Bangladesh squad for the upcoming 50-over cricket tournament Asia Cup to be held from September 13-28 in the UAE. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Rosina Khan admitted the charges brought by Usha against the middle-order batsman yesterday and ordered the Sadar Upazila executive officer to investigate the case, bdnews24.com reported.
