Three others were acquitted in the case. Special judge H C Vora convicted Farooq Bhana and Imran Sheru and awarded them life sentence after the prosecution established their role as conspirators in the burning of two coaches of the Sabarmati Express in 2002. The court acquitted three others, identified as Hussain Suleman Mohan, Kasam Bhamedi and Faruk Dhantiya. These five men were apprehended in 2015-2016 and the trial was held at a special court set up at the Sabarmati Central Jail here. The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea that sought a minimum punishment of two years for electoral offences, including bribery, false statement, undue influence, by candidates and political parties. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra refused to entertain a PIL filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay that sought to make electoral offences cognisable. "Heard and dismissed," said the bench also comprising justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud. In his plea, Upadhyay had alleged that since 2000, apart from general and state assembly elections, bribes were also given to garner support for particular political parties and candidates in by-polls. "The change in law has become necessary as there have been increasing incidents of bribery being detected in all elections, from local body polls to Lok Sabha elections. Prosecutors have accused Khaw Kim-sun of leaving the inflatable ball in the boot of a car where the gas leaked out and killed his wife and 16-year-old daughter Lily. Khaw, 53, was having an affair and his wife would not grant him a divorce, prosecutors said. They accused him of hatching a deliberate plot to murder her, but said it was likely he had not intended to kill his daughter. A Delhi court today acquitted two men, accused of hijacking a New Delhi-Srinagar Air India flight and forcing it to land in Pakistan in 1981. Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Pandey granted the relief to Tajinder Pal Singh and Satnam Singh. According to the prosecution, on September 29, 1981, the two allegedly hijacked an Air India plane from New Delhi en route to Srinagar via Amritsar and forced it to land in Lahore, Pakistan, where they were arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. Both were deported in 2000 from Pakistan after serving life-term for hijacking. They had later sought their discharge from the case but a sessions court had dismissed their plea. Raju Singh and Kulvinder Singh of Ludhiana were arrested during vehicle checking in Jammu city last evening, a police official said. He said 20 kgs of poppy straw was recovered from their possession. A local drug peddler Kewal Krishan alias Nikka Billa was arrested after three gms of heroin was recovered from his possession at Sattani village in Udhampur district yesterday, the official said. Five minor boys were apprehended here for allegedly killing a 14-year-old boy, police said today. Zuber's body was found at a vacant plot in the Ladhawala locality on August 23, Circle Officer Harish Bhadoria said. The five minor boys were apprehended yesterday, he said, adding that the boy was stoned to death by them after an argument. Zuber had gone to bring medicines on August 23 but did not return home, following which a complaint was lodged, the officer said.

A man was arrested for allegedly trying to rape an eight-year-old girl when she had gone to buy a rakhi from his shop here, police said today. The man was arrested yesterday after the girl's family lodged a complaint, Circle Officer Rizwan Ahmad said. He said the accused attempted to rape the girl in his shop, but was rescued by locals after she shouted for help. The man was thrashed by locals who handed him over to the police, the officer said.
A Myanmar court postponed ruling today on whether two Reuters journalists violated a state secrets law while reporting on the Rohingya crisis, with a new date set for next week. Five people were arrested and fake currency notes with face value of Rs 1.63 lakh were seized here, police said today. The arrests were made yesterday by a police team that also seized a printing machine, a car and a motorcycle, SP (City) Ombir Singh said. During interrogation, the accused said they supplied fake currency notes in western Uttar Pradesh, he said. The matter is being investigated, Singh said.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recovered the pistol used for killing Bengaluru-based journalist-cum-activist Gauri Lankesh while investigating the Narendra Dabholkar murder case, thus establishing a connection between the two murders.The pistol was recovered from Shubham Surale, the brother-in-law of Sachin Andure, an accused in the Dabholkar murder case, who was arrested from Aurangabad by the CBI on August 18. Two men were arrested today for allegedly threatening a businessman and trying to extort Rs 50 lakh from him in northwest Delhi's Subhash Place, the police said. Himanshu Jain, a property dealer, and his employee Manoj Meena were arrested in connection with the case, they said. On August 19, the businessman lodged a complaint at the Subhash Place police station alleging that he was being threatened over phone by the accused who were demanding Rs 50 lakh from him, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest) Aslam Khan. Based on a tip off and technical surveillance, a trap was laid to nab the accused and after an intense chase of seven days, the accused were arrested, Khan said. The accused revealed that in order to make easy money, they planned to place extortion calls to rich people across the city, the officer said. A mobile phone, a SIM used for commission of crime, and the documents used to procure the SIM were recovered from their possession, he said.
A 27-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death in northwest Delhi's Nangloi today after he brushed past the accused, police said. The deceased was identified as Deepak, they said. The incident occurred at around 3:30 pm at Regar Chaupal after Deepak brushed past the accused Bolt which led to a heated argument between the duo following which Deepak abused Bolt. The accused then took the victim to a nearby park where he beat him brutally including on his stomach, a police officer said. Deepak was rushed to the hospital where he died due to severe internal bleeding during the course of treatment, the officer said. The accused was arrested and booked. Further investigation is underway, he added.
A 55-year-old railway employee was killed allegedly after a truck hit his motorcycle in northwest Delhi's Hakikat Nagar, the police said today. Rakesh Kumar, posted at the New Delhi railway station, was returning home after his duty last night when the Delhi-registered truck allegedly hit his motorcycle near the red light at Hakikat Nagar, a police officer said. The accused driver fled the scene, leaving the truck behind, the officer said. Kumar was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, the officer added. The truck was taken into police custody and a case was registered, police said, adding that the matter is being investigated.

A woman and her friend were today shot dead allegedly by her father and uncle in a suspected case of "honour killing" in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, police said. Fauzia, 24, and Imran, 30, were in a relationship and used to meet without the knowledge of their families, The Express Tribune reported. The woman's father and other family members came to know that she had gone to meet Imran at his house, police said. "In a fit of rage, the woman's father Iqbal, uncle Yaseen and two cousins rushed to his house and opened fire on them," he said. The couple were killed on the spot in the firing.
