The Delhi Police today claimed to have solved two cases of burglary with the arrest of three men. Nikhil (29), Suraj (20) and Mohit (18) were arrested in connection with two cases of burglary lodged at the Chhawla Police Station, they said. While Nikhil is employed with the municipal corporation as a private sanitation worker, the others are school dropouts. Five smartphones were seized from their possession, they said, adding an investigation in to the case was underway.

Avinash Bali, the key witness in the 2011 murders of Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez, was allegedly killed by his friend Nilesh Shukla over some personal dispute, the police said today as they announced arrests of three persons in the case. A personal cum financial dispute between Bali (40) and Shukla (38), the prime accused in the case, seems to be the cause behind the crime, a senior police official said. A Rohingya man was arrested here for allegedly defaming a Rohingya woman by allegedly posting some personal photos of her on social media, police said today. The man and the woman, who are residents of a camp of Rohingyas in the city, were colleagues at an office and they had taken some personal pictures then, they said. The woman got married to another Rohingya man, who is now working in Canada, they said. The accused person allegedly grew jealous and shared the pictures with the woman's husband and other residents of the camp, they added. Foreign currencies worth Rs 81 lakh were seized in two different cases at the airport here today and one person arrested in this connection, Customs officials said. Acting on a specific information, the officials of Air Intelligence Unit intercepted a 51-year-old passenger bound for Singapore and recovered Euros, US dollars, Singapore dollars and Brunei dollars in different denominations worth Rs 77 lakh, a release from Commissioner of Customs said. A search on him resulted in the recovery of Rs 4.60 lakh from his pockets following which the passenger was arrested, it said. Two video clips have surfaced purportedly showing a tribal man being tortured by the relatives of the woman with whom he had eloped. Senior Superintendent of Police, Kathua, Shridhar Patil said they have taken cognizance of the videos and set up special teams to trace the youth and bring the culprits to book. Shoukat Ali, a resident of Kathua district's Manyari village, reportedly went missing with the woman, Jeelo, on August 16, three days after their wedding was solemnised at the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Eleven resorts constructed on the elephant corridor in Nilgiris district were sealed today in compliance with a Supreme Court directive to crack down on illegal structures in the area. The process of sealing the resorts, including the one owned by yesteryear Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty, began this morning, officials sources said. Adhering to an Apex Court order, the Nilgiris district administration had identified 39 illegally constructed resorts on elephant corridor, obstructing the free movement of pachyderms, leading to animal-human conflict. During the first phase, the authorities had sealed 27 resorts. Of the remaining 12, the officials had served notices to 11 resorts yesterday seeking valid documents or remove the structures. In view of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls slated for later this year, police in the state's Bhind district have arrested over 4,800 persons against whom different types of warrants were pending, a senior official said today. Bhind Superintendent of Police Rudolf Alvares also said that police stations were issuing notices to all such persons against whom court warrants are pending. "Our main focus is to act on the pending warrants in view of ensuing elections. So far this year, 1,015 out of 3,461 criminals, against whom permanent warrants were pending, have been arrested. Another 3,861 out of 5,542 criminals, against whom arrest warrants had been issued, were caught and presented in court," Alvares said. He said that the police would ask polling authorities to remove the names of those people from the voters list against whom warrants were pending but who were unavailable at their current addresses.
The killings of journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru last year and rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in Pune in 2013 were "linked", the CBI claimed before a court here today. Seeking extension of the custody of Sachin Andure, one of the alleged shooters in the Dabholkar murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the court that one of the accused in the Lankesh murder case had handed over a pistol and three bullets with a magazine to him. Judicial Magistrate (First Class) H R Jadhav extended Andure's CBI custody till August 30. The National Green Tribunal has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to constitute a committee to enquire about the status of 51,837 industries in the national capital which are running in residential areas without requisite approvals. The green panel asked the apex pollution monitoring body to form a two member committee to look into the entire matter and take appropriate action in accordance with law.
