The Supreme Court has upheld an order of the National Green Tribunal, dismissing a plea challenging the declaration of one-km eco-sensitive zone around Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary in Mirzapur and Sonbhadra districts of Uttar Pradesh. A bench comprising justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said there was no ground to interfere with the tribunal's direction. "We do not find any reason to interfere with the order of the National Green Tribunal. Accordingly, the civil appeal is dismissed," the bench said. In October last year, the tribunal junked a plea filed by an NGO on the ground that objections and suggestions were considered by the expert committee for declaration of one-km eco-sensitive zone around the sanctuary. The death of a man, who allegedly committed suicide after escaping from a police station in Odisha's Kendrapara district, has led to road blockade by irate villagers and suspension of a police officer. The deceased, identified as Abinash Paitala (25), had been arrested yesterday night in a mobile theft case. After interrogation, he was kept in a lock-up of Mahakalapada Police Station, the police officer said. He allegedly escaped from the police station at around 10 pm, when he was taken out of the lock-up to attend natures call. The police launched a search to trace the man but could not find him. Paitala's body was found hanging from the staircase railing of a house in the village today morning, the officer said. A 32-year-old woman was allegedly killed in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar district by her husband, who suspected that she was in an illicit relationship, police said today. They said the man was arrested today after a case was registered on the complaint of the woman's 11-year-old daughter. The accused, Kishan Lal (35), after an argument late last night with his wife Manju, hit her with a brick on her head, Station House Officer, Suratgarh City, Niket Kumar Pareek, said. A clash broke out between two communities outside a gurudwara here following which over 80 identified and hundreds of unidentified people were booked for rioting and damaging public property, the police said today. Additional Superintendent of Police (rural) Subhash Chandra Shakya said tension erupted yesterday when a watchman objected putting up a cart to sell 'rakhis' by a 14-year-old girl outside the gurudwara in the Banda area of the district. A woman returning home after purchasing rakhis has been shot dead by an unidentified miscreant in Bihar's Katihar district, a police officer said today. Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar said that the woman, identified as 22-year old Priyanka Kumari, was shot at near Sant colony yesterday when she was returning home with her sister. The miscreant, who had covered his face with a handkerchief, had stopped the sisters near Sant colony and tried to snatch Priyanka Kumari's mobile which she resisted following which the miscreant shot at her leaving her seriously injured, the SP said. The woman was rushed to sadar hospital but doctors referred her to Katihar Medical College and Hospital where she was declared brought dead. The miscreant escaped from the scene after snatching the mobile phone. Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has summoned former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister tomorrow in a Rs 35 billion money laundering and fake bank accounts case. In July, the Supreme Court listed Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur as beneficiaries in an alleged scam "running into billions of rupees" that led to the arrest of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman's close aide and famous banker Hussain Lawai. The FIA issued notices yesterday to the former president and his sister to appear at the agency's headquarters in Islamabad tomorrow. This is the fourth time they have been summoned, Dawn newspaper reported. Despite earlier summons, Zardari and Talpur failed to appear before the FIA's joint investigation team probing a multi-billion money laundering scam. The FIA has been asked by the Supreme Court to submit a comprehensive report in connection with the fake accounts case on Tuesday, it said. Zardari and Talpur have not joined the investigation in the case.
Can people be allowed to lodge a first information report (FIR) online or an e-FIR from the confines of their homes, the Home Ministry has asked the Law Commission. Registration of FIR is mandatory under Section 154 of the CrPC if the information discloses commission of a cognisable offence and no preliminary inquiry is permissible in such a situation, according to a November 2013 Supreme Court order. A Himachal Pradesh Police head constable was suspended today for allegedly misbehaving with a woman official of the Geological Survey of India in Una district of the state. Surjeet Singh, in-charge Mehatpur entry point, was suspended after the official called up Superintendent of Police, Una, Diwakar Sharma, at around 1.30 am alleging misconduct by the head constable. A 21-year-old man was arrested today for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl in the district, police said. The matter came to light after the 17-year-old girl, a native of Sivagiri village, was found pregnant by doctors at the Erode government hospital, where she had gone for treatment, they said. Upon enquiry, the girl told the parents that Shanmugam, with whom she was in love, had sexually assaulted her a few months back. Subsequently, the victim's parents lodged a complaint against the youth and a case was registered against him under POCSO Act. Investigation is on, police said.

The Jammu and Kashmir crime branch has registered a case and begun probe into the supply of hand-held e-challan devices to the traffic police at a cost 14 times higher than the market price. The FIR was registered against unidentified officials of the state police and Jammu and Kashmir Small Scale Industries Development Corporation Limited (SICOP) for alleged fraud in the supply of 30 hand-held e-challan system, a crime branch official said. According to the official, some officials of SICOP and the state police headquarters were allegedly involved in the manipulation of the relevant tender and thereby causing a huge loss to the exchequer. The tender for purchase of the devices was issued in 2016. SICOP emerged as the lowest bidder and agreed to supply the equipment from a Noida-based company at a cost of Rs 20,100 per piece. Police claimed today to have busted a sex racket in Mathura in Uttar Pradesh with the arrest of three persons, and said they were trying to identify other members of the gang. The racket was busted on Friday and the three men were arrested at Tekman colony under Highway police station. Police identified the three men as Naresh, Mukesh and the gang operator Sandeep. They have also recovered more than Rs 6,000 from them. The Delhi High Court has pulled up the police for not lodging a case of cheating against a real estate firm for allegedly cheating several persons by inducing them to invest in its project to build a mall in north Delhi on a false promise of ownership of shops and has directed registration of an FIR.
