Manju Verma, husband's anticipatory bail pleas in Arms Act case rejected

Two separate courts of Begusarai on Saturday rejected the anticipatory bail application of former Bihar Welfare Department minister Manju Verma and her spouse Chandrashekhar Verma in an Arms Act case against them.The Vermas were put behind the bars after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recovered as many as 50 live cartridges from their house on August 17, during a raid in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case.Advocates appearing for Manju and Chandrashekhar argued for the anticipatory bail, citing the fact that the duo was living in Patna and rarely visited their house in Begusarai, where the probe authorities found the cartridges.Manju Verma stepped down as minister after her husband, Chandrakant Verma, came under the police radar for having alleged links with Brajesh Thakur, the mastermind of the Muzaffarpur shelter home case.Chandrakant allegedly used to visit the shelter home quite frequently, spending hours in the girls' rooms. Man gets death sentence for raping, killing deaf and mute girl

A 24-year-old man has been awarded death sentence by a court in Chhattisgarh's Durg district for raping and murdering a five-year-old deaf and mute girl in 2015. Special Judge, POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act), Shubhra Pachouri, pronounced Ram Sona, guilty on Friday and sentenced him to death, Durg's Additional Public Prosecutor Kamal Kishore Verma told PTI. The court also awarded five years' imprisonment each to his mother Kunti Sona (42) and friend Amrit Singh (23) for concealing evidence of the offence. The convict, a resident of Khursipar locality in Durg, had raped the speech and hearing-impaired girl, residing in the same area, on February 25, 2015, and then smothered her to death, Verma said. Later, his mother and friend helped him to pack the body in a plastic bag and dumped it at a secluded place in the district, located around 45 km from here, he said. Junior engineer held for taking bribe: Vigilance

A junior engineer in a power utility company in Odisha's Balasore district was arrested by Vigilance sleuths for allegedly accepting bribe for installation of an electric transformer. Kaustuva Mohapatra, junior engineer in NESCO, Khaira section, had demanded illegal gratification of Rs 1,500 from the complainant for installation of transformer as the one installed earlier has been non-functional since August 14 this year, a vigilance release said. Accordingly, a trap was laid yesterday and Mohapatra was caught red-handed while accepting bribe of Rs 1,500 from the complainant. The bribe money was recovered from the pant pocket of Mohapatra and seized in presence of witnesses, it said. While the engineer was arrested, his rented house at Khaira was searched and the case is under investigation, it added.

DSGMC chief Manjit Singh GK attacked by pro-Khalistan supporters in Calfornia

President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Manjit Singh GK was attacked in California allegedly by pro-Khalistan individuals, during which one of his associates was injured. Singh, who had travelled to California following a visit to New York, said the purpose of his visit was to hold discussions among the Sikh community about the 550th birthday anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak, to be commemorated next year. This is the second attack on the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader. He was earlier attacked in New York. Govt seeks applications to fill judicial, technical member posts at NCLT

The government has sought applications for filling up as many as 36 posts of judicial and technical members at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). In two separate circulars dated August 23, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs said it has been decided to fill up 14 and 22 vacancies of judicial and technical members, respectively, in the tribunal. The NCLT has been constituted under the Companies Act, which is being implemented by the corporate affairs ministry. The last date for filling the online applications for the vacancies is September 14. In April and May, the ministry had sought applications for 4 and 12 positions of judicial and technical members, respectively, in the tribunal. The new vacancies are in place of the earlier ones. The circulars also said that those who have already applied earlier "are not required to apply again as their existing application shall be considered for the purpose". Shamli hooch tragedy: 5 constables of district excise dept suspended

Five constables of Shamli district excise department has been suspended for alleged negligence of duties following the death of five people after drinking spurious liquor, an official said. On August 21 five people died and nine fell ill after consuming spurious liquor at Kamalpur village. The action against the five constables was taken last evening after a preliminary inquiry found them negligent of their duties, district excise officer R B Singh said.

Youth arrested for sexually assaulting girl in UP

A student of class 11 was allegedly beaten up and sexually assaulted by a youth in Shamli district, following which the accused was arrested, police said. According to the complaint lodged by the girl's family, the incident took place yesterday when she was on her way to school, they said. When the girl opposed the accused's attempt to sexually assault her she was also beaten up, the police said.

Two arrested for forging railway minister's signature

A former armyman and a civil engineer have been arrested for their alleged involvement in forging the signature of the railway minister, police said today. Thalesetty Sudhakar, a civil engineer, and Raman Joshi, an ex-serviceman, were arrested over the last two days from Hyderabad and Delhi, respectively, they said. A complaint was lodged in this connection at the Parliament Street police station by Vishok Gupta, an RPF personnel, they added. Gupta alleged that the Ministry of Railways had received a complaint regarding a letterhead bearing forged signature of the railway minister and a copy of the membership card of ZRUCC (Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee) in the name of Mallikarjun Vadla, police said. Undecided on approaching SC on Rafale, there is corruption in apex court too: Prashant Bhushan

Supreme Court lawyer and Swaraj Abhiyan president Prashant Bhushan today said he was undecided on approaching the Supreme Court on the Rafale fighter deal, alleging there was corruption in the apex court as well. Addressing a press conference here, Bhushan said for taking any case to the Supreme Court one has to think as "there is rampant corruption in the apex court" and it was the reason he was undecided about taking the issue to the court. Asked whether there is corruption in the Supreme Court, Bhushan said, "There are no two opinions that corruption is there in the apex court." He alleged there was a scam of over Rs 36,000 crore in the Rafale deal. Bhushan said he had chosen the path to put all-round pressure on the Centre on the deal. "Let me see what results will come," he said. He praised the Congress for raising the issue. "The Congress has taken up the issue forcefully which is praiseworthy," he said.

Judge deals blow to Trump effort to overhaul bureaucracy

A federal judge has dealt a blow to President Donald Trump's effort to overhaul the US bureaucracy, including by making it easier to fire government workers. US District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson says in a ruling issued today that key provisions of three executive orders Trump signed in May "undermine federal employees' right to bargain collectively" as protected by federal law. She adds in her decision that "the President must be deemed to have exceeded his authority in issuing them." Organisations representing federal workers had sued over the executive orders and applauded the judge's ruling. Trump's executive orders covered federal employee collective bargaining rights, grievance procedures and official time use. The White House had no immediate comment on the judge's ruling.

Two arrested for abducting, raping minor for week

Two men were arrested after a 16-year-old girl alleged that she was abducted, confined in a house, and raped by four men for a week, the police said today. The girl alleged that she was abducted from northeast Delhi's Harsh Vihar and raped in Greater Noida's Surajpur area, they said. The girl was abducted on August 15 when the victim went to a nearby shop for buying some household items. Two bike-borne men allegedly subdued the girl with intoxicants and gagged her before abducting, they said. In her statement to the police, the victim alleged that she was raped by four men in a house where she was confined for a week. On August 24, the victim somehow managed to escape and filed a complaint at the Surajpur police station. The incident was reported to the Harsh Vihar police station, police said. Body of witness in Unnao rape case exhumed

The body of Yunus, a witness in the Unnao rape case who died recently, was exhumed today, officials said. "The body of Yunus was exhumed tonight and it was sent for post-mortem examination. The body was exhumed in presence of Qazi sahab (religious leader)," Unnao Additional District Magistrate BN Yadav told PTI. Earlier in the day, district authorities met relatives of the witness seeking consent to exhume his body for a post-mortem examination. Yunus was a witness in the case registered after the death of the father of a minor who was alleged rape by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. Cook arrested for killing fellow worker over Rs 100

An 18-year-old man, working in a hotel as a cook, was today arrested for allegedly killing another worker over a paltry sum of Rs 100. The accused was identified as Aftab alias Chand Manjur Khan, who works in a hotel in suburban Kurla. Kalam Buttu Khan (18), who worked in the same hotel had borrowed Rs 100 from him to celebrate Eid earlier this week, police said. They had an altercation this afternoon over delay in repaying the money, and in a fit of rage Aftab allegedly picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed Kalam, police said. Kalam was taken to a hospital but was declared dead before admission, a police official from Vinoba Bhave Nagar Police Station said. An offence of murder has been registered.

10 cops injured during protests over minor's rape in Delhi; 11 held

Six persons were arrested and five others apprehended today for allegedly injuring 10 policemen and damaging cars during a protest over the alleged rape of a girl in Delhi's Vasant Kunj area. The protest over the alleged rape of the 11-year-old girl last night turned violent as demonstrators damaged cars and pelted stones at police personnel. Following arson and violence, police detained over 20 people. However, they later said six of them were arrested while 5 apprehended. The arrested accused were identified as Sonu (27), Murari (59), Sanju (38), Sonu (23), Vimal (27) and Dalip (22), they said. The five apprehended accused are being treated as juvenile and were sent to observation home till the verification of their age, they added. Chinese ridesharing giant admits 'responsibility' for murder

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday busted three hideouts of terrorists and arrested a key Over Ground Worker (OGW) in South Kashmir's Pulwama district on Saturday.The police, along with the security forces busted the hideout from a house in Rajpora Litter area and recovered incriminating material along with arms and ammunition.In another incident, two hideouts were busted in Khallen and Tahab villages of Pulwama and three persons, who were working for the terror group Hizbul Mujahideen were arrested. Federation of Nepali Journalist seek amendment in anti-press criminal code

The Federation of Nepali Journalist (FNJ) today sought amendments to the provisions of the new Civil and Criminal Code which can jail journalists for publishing photographs without permission. In a four-point-declaration issued today, the umbrella institution of Nepali journalists has called for amendment and revisions of provisions of the law pertaining to freedom of speech and expression. Provisions and clauses related to crime against the state, public security, defamation and privacy must be amended and revised immediately as they adversely impact freedom of expression and press freedom, said a statement issued by the FNJ The new code makes publishing private information, recording audio or taking pictures without permission punishable by up to three years in jail and thousands of rupees fine. Man kidnaps 9-year old nephew, throws him into flooded river

A man was arrested here today for allegedly kidnapping and throwing his nine-year old nephew into the swollen Kadalundi river two weeks ago, police said. Muhammed was suspected to have kidnapped his brother's son Muhammed Shaheen, a fourth standard student, to extort money from the parents, they said. When the news of Shaheen, who went missing from Melattoor since August 13, was shared on social media, Muhammed threw the boy into the river, they said, adding that a search was on for the body. Police detained Muhammed after CCTV footage showed him taking the boy on a motorcycle. On interrogation, Muhammmed confessed that he threw the boy into the river to kill him and he was arrested under various sections of IPC including 302 (murder) and 364 (kidnapping in order to murder) and the Juvenile Justice Act, police added.
