Gauri Lankesh murder: K'taka SIT meets Maha ATS to share info

The Karnataka Police SIT probing the Gauri Lankesh murder case arrived here to check if those arrested by the Maharashtra ATS in connection with a seizure of explosives and arms had any links to her killing, officials said today. The 55-year-old journalist, known for her Left-leaning and strong anti-Hindutva views, was gunned down in front of her house in Bengaluru on September 5 last year. The special investigation team met ATS chief Atulchandra Kulkarni yesterday, an official said. The ATS would provide it access to those arrested in connection with the seizure of crude bombs, explosives and arms, including 7.65 mm pistols, from Maharashtra earlier this month, the official added. The ATS had arrested Vaibhav Raut, Sharad Kalaskar, Sudhanwa Gondhalekar, ex-councillor Shrikant Pangarkar and Avinash Pawar in this case. 3 FIRs registered in connection with attack on DC & SP

Three FIRs has been registered by the Pakur district administration in connection with the attack on the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police on Wednesday at Dangapara village, police said today. Two FIRs has been registered on the statement of Block Development Officer, Maheshpur, Umesh Mandal and one FIR was lodged on the basis of a written statement of the Maheshpur police station officer-in-charge, Umeshchandra Prasad, the said. Unnao death: Officials meet family, suggest exhumation

District authorities today met relatives of a witness in the Unnao rape case who died recently, seeking consent to exhume his body for a post-mortem examination, officials said. Yunus was a witness in the case registered after the death of the father of a minor, who had alleged rape by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The rape victim's father died in April after being beaten up, allegedly by Sengar's brother and others. The rape victim's uncle had alleged foul play after the death of Yunus last week. On Twitter, Congress president Rahul Gandhi termed it mysterious and his burial hurried. The man's family however said he had died due to a liver ailment for which he was being treated. Man beheads mother in Jharkhand

A man allegedly beheaded his 65-year-old mother in Jharkhand's Dumka district today, police said. The man identified as 35-year-old Champai Marandi allegedly beheaded his mother and then tried to flee with the severed head but was caught by the villagers, they said. The villagers caught Marandi when he tried to escape with the severed head of his mother, which he had wrapped in cloth, police said adding that the people of Siltha B village handed him to police, who arrested him. The severed head as well as the body of the woman has been recovered, they said. Officer-in-charge of the Ramgarh police station, Sanjay Kumar said the woman was sitting at the door of her house when Marandi arrived in an inebriated state and beheaded her with a sharp weapon. Marandi was a habitual drunkard and was also unemployed, the OC added.

MP man convicted of raping minor girl, gets 21 years in jail

A special court here today sentenced a man to 21 years rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping a minor girl on July 29. Additional District and Sessions Judge Vidhi Saxena convicted Narayan Mali (50) and sentenced him under section 376 (AB) which was brought about by an amendment in the IPC in April this year, special prosecutor Devendra Kumar Meena told PTI. Mali was also sentenced to three years in jail under Section 354 (A) of the IPC and eight years and 11 years under Sections 3 A/4 and 5 M/6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, he said. Meena said that the jail terms would run concurrently. Mali had raped a seven-year-old girl when she came to buy biscuits from his shop, he said, adding that the charge sheet in the case was filed in five days and the trial was completed in 10 days.

'Bavaria gang' dacoit arrested after encounter in Ghaziabad

A dacoit of the "Bavaria gang" carrying a reward of Rs 30,000 on his head was arrested today after a brief encounter in this district, police said. Rakesh Bavaria alias Babli, who had involvements in many robbery cases, was arrested today they said, adding that he used to operate with other members of the gang in Gautam Budh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Firozabad and Etah. To make justice accessible, infrastructure is necessary: CJI

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said today that development of basic infrastructure for the judiciary was indispensable if people were to have access to justice. The CJI was addressing judges and trainee judicial officers after inauguration of a new building of the Chhattisgarh State Judicial Academy on the high court premises here. Access to justice was a constitutional principle but one could not have access to justice without basic infrastructure, Misra said. "When we think of infrastructure we think of things such as buildings, but apart from physical infrastructure, there has to be intellectual infrastructure, which means the mental ability to understand academic aspects of law," he said. 2 Maha officials arrested for seeking bribe from rape victim's

Two Maharashtra government officials were arrested here for allegedly seeking and accepting a bribe from the mother of a rape victim in return for processing a compensation cheque, an Anti Corruption Bureau official said today. The complainant's seven-year-old daughter had been raped last year and as part of the state government's Manodhairya scheme, they were to get a compensation cheque of Rs 2 lakh, he said. "Child protection officer of Pusad Panchayat Pravin Kisan Wanole (28) demanded Rs 5,000 from the victim's mother to clear this cheque," the official said. Following a complaint lodged by the woman, the Yavatmal unit of the ACB laid a trap yesterday and arrested Sadashiv Shivaji Wanole, a surveyor with the state Irrigation department in Mahagaon, when he came to collect money on behalf of the child protection officer, he said. The child protection officer, part of the state government's Child Welfare department, was arrested subsequently, he added.

8th accused held in scribe shooting case

Police have arrested one more person on charges of shooting at TV journalist Anuj Chaudhary in April at Razapur village here, an official said today. Last evening, the police intercepted Dinesh alias Gandhi during a routine check near Shastri Nagar, Senior Superintendent of police Vaibhav Krishna said. This is an eighth arrest in this case. Rihai Manch seeks review of verdict in UP court blasts case

Social organisation Rihai Manch today urged a special court to review its verdict convicting two people in the 2007 court blasts case in Uttar Pradesh, and said it was likely to challenge it in the high court. "The special court has convicted Tariq Kajmi and Mohd Akhtar for the blasts and fixed August 27 for awarding quantum of sentence. We request the court to review its verdict," retired IPS officer S R Darapuri, a senior member of Rihai Manch, told reporters here. "The Manch is of the view that there is a need to further hear all aspects in the case," Darapuri said. Asked whether the Manch will extend help to the families of the two in challenging the verdict, Darapuri said, "We will adopt all available means including challenging it in the high court." Three arrested for beating up hospital manager

Three hotel management students were today arrested for beating up an official and ransacking the premises of a private hospital in Salt Lake, police said. They were in an inebriated state and had turned up at the hospital yesterday to treat a head injury one of them had sustained, police said. Since it was an injury following an accident, the hospital manager got in touch with the Bidhannagar North Police Station for completing the formalities. This angered the youths and they started beating up the manager. Of the three, two hailed from Punjab while one is a local. After beating up the manager, they started ransacking the hospital but were stopped by the police, who arrived immediately. A case was registered against the three and they would be produced before a local court soon, the police said.

407 cases settled in Jammu Lok Adalat

Over 400 cases were settled today at a Lok Adalat held in the District Court Complex premises here, an official spokesman said. Eight benches took up a total of 422 cases, out of which 407 were disposed off, the spokesman said. Two killed, 10 injured as taxi falls into gorge in U'khand

Two persons, including a woman, were killed and 10 injured when a taxi fell into a gorge on the Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway here today, police said. The taxi, carrying 12 people, was on its way to Chamba from Chjinyalisaur in Uttarkashi district. It fell into a 150-metre-deep gorge near Bailgaon in Tehri district, killing the driver and a woman passenger on the spot, SSP Yogendra Singh Rawat said. The deceased have been identified as 53-year-old Ram Singh Rana, who was driving the vehicle, and 40-year-old Leela Devi who hailed from Chinyalisaur, he said. The injured were were rushed to Baurari hospital, from where five were referred to AIIMS, Rishikesh, the police official said.

Fake currency racket busted in Jammu, three held

Police today claimed to have busted a fake currency racket with the arrest of three people and seizure of counterfeit notes of face value Rs 82,000. Another call centre scam targeting tax-payers in US, other countries comes to light

With the arrest of seven people, police today busted a gang which allegedly duped people living in the US and other countries by telling them that they need to pay tax dues, an official said. Two years ago, the Thane Crime Branch had unearthed a similar scam which targeted US residents. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a call centre in Mira Road area and arrested seven people, Assistant Superintendent of Police Atul Kulkarni said. A case under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC and sections of the Information Technology Act was registered with Navghar police, and several computers were seized, he said. Explaining the gang's modus operandi, Kulkarni said the accused obtained financial details of foreign nationals such as loans they had taken and their salaries. The gang members then called such people, pretending to be from tax authorities in respective countries, and told them that they owed "loan tax" which can be paid through Bitcoins, he said.
