A special police officer (SPO) today allegedly decamped with an AK-47 rifle from a police station in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, an official said. SPO Showket Ahmed Shiekh, a resident of Harmain area in the district, decamped with an AK-47 rifle from the possession of Selection Grade Constable Mohammad Yaseen from the Sophian police station, the police official said. He said police have registered a case and a search has been launched to recover the weapon and nab the SPO.
Four over-ground workers (OGWs) of militant outfits were arrested and three hideouts of the ultras busted in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, a spokesman said today. The police, along with security forces, busted a hideout in Rajpora Litter area and arrested an over-ground worker, he said. Incriminating material along with improvised explosive device (IED) material was recovered from the hideout, the spokesman said. In another incident, two hideouts were busted in Khallen and Tahab villages of Pulwama district. The magazine of an AK rifle, an INSAS magazine and one UBGL were seized, the spokesman said. Three people, who were allegedly working for militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen group, were arrested, the spokesman said. Cases under relevant sections of the IPC were registered against them, he added.
A 17-year-old girl was shot dead by her brother in a suspected case of "honour killing" in Pakistan's Punjab province, police said today. Samina Bibi's family suspected of her having a relationship with a man in Bahiwal village, some 200 kms from here, senior police officer Mudasar Awan said. "Her brother Habib had earlier caught her with the boy and thrashed both of them. He warned her that if she does not stop seeing the man, he would kill her," the officer said. "When Habib came to know that Samina had met the man on Eid, he thrashed her with the help of his father and then shot her dead from a point blank range yesterday," he said. A three-year-old boy was rescued after he was allegedly kidnapped by a neighbour who wanted to keep the child as his son in south Delhi's Hauz Khas area, a police official said. The accused was identified as Abedin Ansari, a native of Giridi in Jharkhand, he said. On August 19, the victim's father had filed a complaint at the Hauz Khas police station alleging that his son who was playing in Shahpur Jat Park at around 7 to 7.30 pm was missing, he said. Police today arrested a person and recovered 15 gm of heroin from his possession near a town along the Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district. The drugs were found in the possession of a 56-year-old man during an operation conducted at Prem Nagar locality at Moreh town this morning, SP S Ibomcha said. The heroin is estimated at Rs 3 lakh in the international market. The operation was carried out to counter the rising number of drugs-related cross-border smuggling cases, Ibomcha said.
A woman has been arrested from the New Alipore area of the city for allegedly trying to "kill" two salesmen of a kitchen-chimney company when they went to her home to receive payment for a product she had purchased a month back, police said today. Madhumanti Saha, in her 50s, has been arrested from her residence in New Alipore's P-block for allegedly spiking drinks she had offered to the two salesmen Amit Chakraborty and Somnath Mondal of a chimney company when they went to her home yesterday to receive payment for the chimney, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said. Two eunuchs were found dead with their throats slit at their residence in Rajasthan's Dholpur district today, police said. The accused had slit their throats with some sharp-edged weapons, they said, adding that a case has been registered against unidentified people. The bodies were found lying on a bed. A court here sentenced a man to four months in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 9 lakh on him in a cheque bounce case. Narendra Shinde, a contractor with the state Excise Department, had taken a loan of Rs 5.55 lakh from his friend, Suresh Sonane, in 2012, the complainant's lawyer Baldev Rajput said. Rajput said a cheque given by Shinde on October 6, 2014, bounced following which Sonane filed a complaint under section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. Thane First Class Judicial Magistrate A B Katte, in a recent order, convicted Shinde in the case and sentenced him to four months simple imprisonment, the complainant's lawyer said. The judge also ordered that the fine amount of Rs 9 lakh be given to Sonane after it is recovered from Shinde, the lawyer informed.
The CBI has arrested an executive engineer of the North Central Railways for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from a contractor for processing payments and granting other favours, officials said today. The alleged bribe was the first installment in the total of Rs 19 lakhs demanded by Panna Lal Sailani, an executive engineer (constructions) posted in Tundla, a major railway junction in Uttar Pradesh, they said. It was alleged in the complaint that Sailani was demanding Rs 19 lakh for making entries in the measurement book, a record of measurements of construction work done by a contractor, and to process contractor's due payments, the officials said. "The CBI laid a trap and the accused was caught red-handed at Agra while accepting a bribe of Rs 5 Lakh as first instalment from the complainant," a CBI Spokesperson said in a statement.
The Bombay High Court has refused to stay the conviction of a government servant for accepting bribes and held that granting relief to the officer would adversely affect the public's perception of the integrity of government institutions. In an order passed earlier this month, a single bench presided over by Justice AM Badar rejected the plea filed by Sangeeta Pillay, an official of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation, Pune, seeking that her conviction be stayed and her sentence be suspended till her appeal against it was decided by the HC. Pillay was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a complainant for registering some documents during a trap laid by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) last year. A special CBI court convicted her in December last year under the Prevention of Corruption Act. A 17-year-old girl has complained to police that she was raped by two people in Jhalawar district, police said today. The girl, a school dropout has alleged that on Thursday evening when she was standing near a hospital, Balu Bheel lured her to get on his motorcycle, following which she was taken to a forest area, where the accused raped her, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ramji Lal Choudhary said. Five persons, including two women, were arrested for allegedly posing as police personnel and trying to extort money from a doctor in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said today. On Thursday, the five accused had gone to the Mumbra-based clinic of Nadeem Baig and demanded Rs 2 lakh after threatening to expose him over a MTP (medical termination of pregnancy) kit found there, police said. The Editors Guild of India today condemned a Patna High Court order restraining the media from reporting on the probe into the Muzaffarpur shelter abuse case and appealed to its and Supreme Court's chief justices to review the decision. In a statement, the media body said such restrictions on reporting on matters of public importance are counterproductive as it decried the recent growing trend of courts issuing such restraint orders on the media that undermine one of the pillars of democracy. The guild is distressed to note that the court, instead of protecting media freedom, has issued an order that has effectively curbed it, it said. "It condemns such orders as it believes that such restrictions on reporting on investigations into a matter of public importance are counterproductive," the statement said. "It also appeals to the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of India and the Patna High Court to review the restraint order and uphold the principles of a free media and democracy," .
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has directed Telangana Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar to apprise it of the probe conducted in the alleged murder of a 27-year-old pregnant woman in Hyderabad by her family members, a NCW official said. The woman was allegedly strangled with a saree by her family members on Thursday morning for marrying without their permission. Taking suo motu cognisance of the case, the NCW has written to the commissioner of police to apprise the commission of the detailed action taken in the matter at the earliest, the official said.
A teenager working at an orphanage in Maharashtra's Thane district has been arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a minor inmate, police said today. Sub-Inspector Bharat Sonawane of the Uttan coastal police in Bhayander in the district said that a 13-year-old inmate of an orphanage here had hung himself on August 19. A suicide note purportedly written by the deceased alleged that Rahul Shinde, a 19-year-old helper at the ashram, was harassing and assaulting him repeatedly, the official said. The note held that Shinde, a Nashik resident who had joined the orphanage ten days before the incident, was to be blamed for the deceased taking the extreme step, he said. Shinde was subsequently arrested under section 305 (abetment of suicide of child) of the Indian Penal Code and further investigations were underway, Sonawane said.
