AAP MLA's PIL against police complaint authority, HC seeks Centre stand

The Delhi High Court today sought response of the Centre on AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha's plea against the LG's decision to form a police complaints authority (PCA) to look into allegations of serious misconduct against erring policemen in the national capital. A bench of justices S Ravindra Bhat and A K Chawla issued notice to the Centre and the Delhi government seeking their stand on the PIL which has contended that the Lieutenant Governor constituted the PCA without consulting the AAP government. Referring to the recent Supreme Court judgement on the administrative powers of the LG and the elected government of Delhi, the petitioner has said that according to the verdict, the LG was bound by the aid and advice of the council of ministers. Jha, the MLA from the Burari constituency of Delhi, has contended that the LG took the decision to constitute the PCA on his own without consulting the council of ministers. Judgement in 2007 Hyderabad twin bomb blasts case on August 27

A Hyderabad court will pronounce on August 27 its judgement against four alleged Indian Mujahideen operatives for triggering twin bomb blasts in August 2007 that left 42 people dead in the city. "After completion of arguments and counter-arguments today, Sessions Judge Srinivas Rao posted the case for judgement on August 27," Special Public Prosecutor C Seshu Reddy told PTI. The trial against the four accused - Anique Shafiq Syed, Mohammed Sadiq, Akbar Ismail Choudhary and Ansar Ahmed Badhsah Sheikh - was moved to a courtroom inside Cherlapalli Central Prison in Hyderabad from a courtroom at Nampally court complex in June. Zia Orphanage Trust case: Khaleda's bail extended till Sep 5

A Dhaka court on Tuesday extended the bail of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia till September 5 in connection to the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.The bail order was passed by acting Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam, as Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 Judge Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman was on leave, The Dhaka Tribune reported.Khaleda's bail has been extended several times in the past. On July 31, Akhtaruzzaman's court had extended Khaleda's bail till August 7.Earlier on March 12, the High Court had granted a four-month bail to Khaleda.On February 8, Special Judge's Court-5 of Dhaka sentenced Khaleda to jail after it had found her and five others guilty in the graft case.Khaleda along with her elder son Tarique Rahman and four others were sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment along with imposing a fine of over 2.1 crore taka (approx Rs 1.6 crore).The case was filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission in July 2008, alleging misappropriation of funds amounting to 2.1 crore .

German couple jailed for selling son online for sex

A German mother and her partner were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for selling the woman's child online for sex.The mother of the child was handed 12 years and six months in jail, while her partner will serve the term for 12 years, reported dpa international.The woman's partner confessed to the crime in June saying that he was the 'driving force' behind it. He further admitted to coercing his girlfriend into letting her son be raped and abused by men they found online.The mother also admitted to the crime in the court of law during the trial but did not reveal her motives behind being an accomplice to heinous act.Two of the abusers in the case were fined 42,500 Euros, which is to be paid to the boy and a girl who was also a victim in the case.A Spanish citizen was handed 10-years of imprisonment following his admission to raping the boy on 15 different occasions after paying the couple over 10,000 Euros.Six others were also sentenced to prison for being a part of the crime.

Kasur convict gets death penalty for rape, murder of 2 more girls in Pak

The convict in a rape and murder of a minor girl in Punjab's Kasur city, which sparked outrage and protests across Pakistan, has been given death penalty by an anti-terrorism court for two more similar cases, according to a media report. Imran Ali, 24 who was involved in at least nine incidents of rape-cum-murder of minors, including the brutal rape and murder of the minor girl in Kasur which he had confessed to during her murder investigation, Dawn newspaper reported. The anti-terrorism court (ATC) yesterday handed out the death penalty to Ali after the prosecution established the role of Ali in the rape and murder charges framed in the cases, the report said. He is currently incarcerated and on death-row for the rape and murder of the minor Kasur girl. He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 1,500,000 and Rs 75,000 under the compensation determined by the court. Case against taxi union members for 'threatening' GoaMiles

Police today registered a case against members of a union of Yellow-and-Black taxi operators for allegedly threatening staff members of GoaMiles, an app-based cab service of Goa Tourism Development Corporation. GoaMiles, the first mobile app-based cab service in Goa, was launched by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday. Cases were registered against Sanjay Naik, president of the United Taximen Association (UTA), a union of taxi operators at Dabolim International Airport, and four others, said inspector Nolasco Rapos of Dabolim police station. The UTA members allegedly threatened the staff at GoaMiles' counter outside the airport earlier today, he said. Police invoked IPC sections 504 (breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against them, Rapos said. Nobody has been arrested yet. Sanjay Naik claimed that the police case was an attempt to "suppress" the taxi drivers' agitation against "illegal" counter of GoaMiles. "We will continue our protest," he said.

Ishrat Jahan case: Special CBI Court rejects discharge pleas of Vanzara, Amin

A Special Court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday rejected the discharge pleas of former Gujarat Police officers, DG Vanzara and NK Amin, in connection with the Ishrat Jahan alleged fake encounter case. Both Vanzara and Amin are out on bail at present.Vanzara, the former Gujarat Deputy Inspector General, and Amin, former Superintendent of Police, had filed application following the discharge of ex-Director General of Police PP Pandey from the case in February this year due to lack of evidence. Vanzara had sought discharge on the ground of parity with PP Pandey.However, Special CBI Judge, JK Pandey, while rejecting the applications said that their case was different from that of PP Pandey. "The magnitude of crime in both cases is different," the Judge observed while rejecting the discharge pleas of Vanzara and Amin. He further said that a clarity was needed on the process of sanction. Woman assaulted by husband in Lutyens' Delhi

A 26-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by her estranged husband over suspicion of an extramarital affair in Chanakyapuri area, police said today. The 28-year-old man is a resident of Shalimar Bagh while his estranged wife lives in Krishna Nagar, they said. In a complaint lodged with the police, the woman alleged her husband followed her in his car, banged her vehicle from behind and stopped it on Sardar Patel Marg last evening. He abused and thrashed her, a senior police official said. The man suspected her of having an extramarital affair, the police said, adding a case has been registered.

PIL in HC seeks websites of police stations with email ids of officers

A PIL was today moved in the Delhi High Court claiming there is no mechanism in the Delhi Police for complainants to communicate with investigating officers through email to ascertain status of their cases. The plea came up for hearing before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar which, due to paucity of time, could not take it up today and listed it for August 29. The PIL by a lawyer, Praveen Kumar Aggarwal, has sought creation of a website for each police station and details of email ids of all officers posted there, so that complainants need not visit the station each time they want an update regarding their complaint. The petitioner has said that investigating officers (IOs) often have to attend courts during the day and are available only in the evenings when it is not convenient for many complainants, especially women, to visit police stations. Woman SI arrested for taking Rs 5-lakh bribe

A woman sub-inspector was arrested here today for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh for not registering a case against a firm, an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said. Sub-inspector Babita Sharma, posted at Shipra Path police station, had demanded a bribe of Rs 50 lakh from a Delhi-based firm for settling a case under the IT Act, but the deal was fixed at Rs 45 lakh, a police officer said. The accused was arrested red-handed while accepting Rs 5 lakh as the first installment. A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and further investigation is going on, the official said.

SC raises question over Muzaffarpur shelter home's funding

A German court today handed down lengthy jail sentences to a couple for repeatedly sexually abusing their young son and selling him to paedophiles online for more than two years. In a case that shocked the country and raised serious questions about child protection services in Germany, the regional court in Freiburg sentenced the boy's mother, Berrin Taha, to 12-and-a-half years in prison. Her husband Christian Lais, the boy's stepfather whom he called "papa", received a 12-year sentence followed by preventive detention. Lais, 39, had a previous conviction for child abuse, raising questions why he was allowed to live in a home with a child present. Kathua rape: Petition filed seeking urgent hearing against torture on social activist

A habeas corpus petition has been filed before the Supreme Court seeking an urgent hearing against the alleged torture meted out to social activist Talib Hussain by Jammu and Kashmir police, in connection with the alleged Kathua rape and murder case.The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra is likely to hear the matter on Wednesday.The petitioner claimed, when Hussain was helping the family members of the Kathua victim, the police allegedly picked him up and there was no information as to where he is at present.Hussain is a social activist, who led an agitation seeking justice for the family of the eight-year-old victim.The eight-year-old girl, belonging to a nomadic Muslim tribe, was abducted, drugged, gang-raped, tortured and killed in January.

Odisha: Teacher sentenced to life for sexually abusing student

A school teacher has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Odisha's Rayagada district for sexually abusing an eight year-old student. Additional district judge Debdutta Das Mohapatra also imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on the teacher of the private school yesterday. In case of failure to pay the fine, the convict would have to undergo an additional six months in jail, the order said. Apart from the victims statement, the court examined 21 witnesses before pronouncing the verdict, Public Prosecutor Ch Srinivas Rao said. According to the prosecution, the matter came to light after the parents of the boy lodged a complaint with the police following which the teacher was arrested on October 9 last under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, POCSO Act and Juvenile Justice Act. The convict used to sexually abuse the child and had threatened him not to disclose the matter to anyone, the prosecution said.

No plans to repeal Article 377 after 2012 gangrape case: Govt tells LS

The government had not considered repealing Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalises consensual gay sex, while amending laws after the 2012 gang-rape case in Delhi, Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said today. "No, madam (Speaker)," was his written reply in Lok Sabha in response to a question on whether the Home Ministry had contemplated repealing Section 377 during its consideration for amendments in the wake of the gang-rape. Ahir said the Justice J S Verma Committee was set up after the incident to examine and recommend amendments in criminal law with respect to crimes against women. The committee did not make any recommendation in relation to Section 377 of the IPC, he said.
