Eight arrested for house-breaking thefts in Maharashtra

Eight people were arrested by the Thane Police in Maharashtra for their alleged involvement in several cases of house-breaking theft at various places in the state, an official said. Acting on a tip-off, the police nabbed an offender from the Mumbra township here a couple of days back. Based on the information provided by him, seven others were arrested in the last two days from Mumbra, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar areas in Thane, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Deepak Deoraj told reporters here last evening. The eight accused, in the age group of 19 to 38 years, were allegedly involved in house-breaking thefts in Thane and also at some places in the neighbouring Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Palghar and Pune, the police said. Items worth Rs 7.85 lakh, including gold and silver jewellery, two laptops and two motorcycles, were recovered from them, Deoraj said.

Army jawan's wife found hanging at home in UP

An Army jawan's wife was found hanging from the ceiling of their home under mysterious circumstances in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, a police official said today. According to SHO Krishan Kumar, Shivani's family has accused her husband and her in-laws of killing her yesterday and then hanging her body to show it as a case of suicide. The incident happened in Manat village under Thana Bhawan police station area. The woman's father has alleged in his complaint that his daughter was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry, Kumar said. He has alleged that her daughter was living with them for six months following disputes with her in-laws and had returned to her husband's house a few days ago. The SHO said the Army jawan is posted in Ladakh. The body has been sent for post-mortem. No arrest has been made so far.

Minor girl abducted, raped in Muzaffarnagar: Police

A 15-year-old girl from New Mandi police station area in Muzaffarnagar city was allegedly abducted and raped by a man for several days, a police official said today. According to SHO Harsharan Sharma, the accused Vishal abducted the girl on July 15 and took her to another city and raped her there. He has been booked under various sections of IPC and POCSO Act. The accused has been absconding after the girl's father registered a case in the matter, Sharma said. A medical examination of the girl is being conducted. The girl's father has alleged that his daughter managed to escape from Vishal's captivity and reached her home. In an unrelated incident, a 16-year-old girl has been reported missing in the city. She had gone to attend her tuition classes in Model Town area last evening, another police official said. Parliament passes Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2018

The Parliament on Monday passed the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2018 which ensures stringent punishment for those convicted of raping girls below 12 years of age.The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha last month and on Monday it was unanimously passed in Rajya Sabha by voice vote.After the bill was passed in the Parliament, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told ANI, "Both houses of the Parliament have passed Criminal Law Amendment Bill and now we will ensure that this act takes effect in the manner in which it has been envisaged. There are various other steps taken to ensure speedy trial."The bill will now replace the Criminal Law Ordinance, promulgated by President Ram Nath Kovind on April 22. Op All Out: Cops nab 50 'offenders' in Amethi

In a district-wide crack down on anti-social elements, the Amethi police has arrested 50 persons accused of various offences, including murder and dowry deaths, an official said today. Additional Superintendent of Police B C Dubey said 50 "offenders" evading arrests were nabbed in an anti-crime drive, "Operation All Out" launched on orders of the state government. In the drive, the police teams led by respective stations house officers of 11 police stations nabbed 50 offenders, he said. The Additional SP said the SHOs of two police stations, Kamrauli and Jamo, who failed to nab the accused with arrest warrants pending in their jurisdictions have also been issued show cause notices to explain the laxity in discharge of duties on their parts. Two women held for robing men on pretext of seeking help

Two women were arrested near the Moolchand Metro Station here for allegedly robbing men on the pretext of seeking help or by alluring them, police said today. The accused identified as Sweety (24) and Muskan (25) used to allure people and rob them of their cash and belongings. On August 4, around 9:30 pm, when the police were patrolling near the metro station, they noticed a person chasing two women. The police immediately jumped into action and after a brief chase, they managed to intercept them, said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast). The victim told police that the two women had slapped him and robbed him of his purse. Subsequently, both the accused women were arrested and the victim's purse was recovered from their possession, Biswal said. 2 cops injured in Delhi while trying to apprehend criminals

Two policemen suffered injuries after a suspected criminal pelted stones at them, an official said today. On the intervening night of August 4 and 5, police were informed that two suspicious men were seen taking a motorcycle, S D Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (PCR) said. The officer said a PCR van was rushed to the spot. The policemen saw the duo taking the motorcycle. The DCP said when the men spotted the police, they tried to flee from the spot, but the PCR van chased them. Head Constable Ishwar Daya managed to overpower one of the men. But the other started pelting stones at the PCR staff, injuring Assistant Sub-Inspector Amar Singh, Mishra said, adding that Daya was also hurt. Singh suffered injuries to his face and eye, he said. The man, who was caught, was identified as Sunny. Vehicle-lifters' gang busted, two held; 7 bikes seized

With the arrest of two persons from Shergarh area here, police today claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of vehicle-lifters and recovered seven stolen bikes and a car from their possession. The police arrested the duo from from Agaryala road in Shergarh area yesterday evening in a joint operation with SWAT team, acting on a tip-off, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Babloo Kumar said. The accused have confessed of stealing two-wheelers from Mathura and Faridabad and then disposing them off at cheaper rates, he said. The SSP said that seven bikes, a car, a country made pistol and live cartridges were recovered from their possession. Moms of 11 children found at New Mexico compound arrested

Three women believed to be the mothers of 11 children found hungry and living in a filthy makeshift compound in rural northern New Mexico have been arrested, following the weekend arrests of two men, authorities said today. A message that people were starving, believed sent by someone inside the compound, led to the discovery of the children. A boy last seen in Alabama in December traveling with one of the men who was arrested has not been found. Taos County, New Mexico, Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said that the women and the two men face charges of child abuse. He identified the women as Jany Leveille, 38-year-old Hujrah Wahhaj and 35-year-old Subhannah Wahha. They were arrested in the town of Taos and booked into jail. The children ranging in age from 1 to 15 were removed from the compound in the small community of Amalia near the Colorado border and turned over to state child-welfare workers. Court convicts US political consultant of groping passenger

A London court has found an American political consultant who worked on Ben Carson's 2016 presidential campaign guilty of groping a fellow passenger on a trans-Atlantic flight last month. Samuel Pimm was convicted of sexual assault Monday following a trial at Ealing Magistrates' Court. He denied touching his female accuser. Prosecutors say the 62-year-old consumed several alcoholic drinks on the Washington to London flight before he put his hands on a woman in the adjacent seat. The woman testified that she was trying to sleep when she felt Pimm touching her arm and breast, then moving toward her crotch. His lawyer suggested she might have been dreaming. Pimm, of Virginia, was fined 720 pounds (USD 930) and ordered to pay 952 pounds (USD 1,231) in compensation and costs.

MLAs meeting Governor ground for disqualification: Speaker

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal today said the very act of the 18 rebel MLAs of the AIADMK meeting Governor Banwarilal Purohit challenging their disqualification is in itself a valid ground for disqualification. He said since the party did not agree to their demand, they met the Governor to dissolve the government. The speaker's counsel stated this in the Madras High Court, which is hearing the disqualification case related to the 18 MLAs. "They claim they met the governor only after the intra- party mechanism failed to redress their grievances, which means that they had left the party. The party had said 'no' to their demand, so they met the governor," senior counsel Aryama Sundaram said on behalf of the speaker. Gauri Lankesh murder: 2 accused allege custodial torture

A Bengaluru court on Monday sent Amit Baddi and Ganesh Miskin, two accused in the Gauri Lankesh murder case, for the medical examination at Victoria Hospital, after the duo complained of custodial torture.The court has also put them under judicial custody.Amit and Ganesh were arrested from Hubli on July 22 and were produced before the third Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court, which had sent them to police custody till August 6.Apart from these two and Rajesh (50), who was arrested from Madikeri district of Karnataka on July 23, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had arrested seven suspects in connection with the murder case.Mohan Nayak, Parshuram Waghmare, K. Hyderabad: NIA conducts searches in 2016 ISIS case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday conducted searches at seven premises of suspects in Hyderabad in connection with an ISIS-related case from 2016.The NIA, who were conducting the searches under Cyberabad's Pahadi Shareef Police Station at Shaheen Nagar area, seized digital devices and incriminating material related to the 2016 case, where four suspected ISIS men were arrested from Hyderabad.According to sources, the NIA also investigated 54-year-old Abdul Quddus, his 18-year-old son Abdul Qadeer and his family members. Former US contractor pleads guilty in kickback case

A Florida man who worked as a project manager for a company that has done tens of millions of dollars in energy efficiency work for the US government has pleaded guilty to charges he took more than USD 2.5 million in kickbacks. Bhaskar Patel, of Windermere, Florida, appeared in federal court in Vermont today. Patel is facing up to 10 years in prison for violating a law against taking kickbacks and bribes involving federal programmes. The plea agreement also calls for the 67-year-old Patel to make cash restitution and liquidate some of his assets. Sentencing is tentatively scheduled for December. Patel's attorney, David Haas, declined to comment on the case today, but said he may have something to say at sentencing.
