Doctor booked for throwing hot tea at wife in Maha's Thane

A doctor has been booked for allegedly throwing hot tea at his wife in Vartak Nagar area of Maharashtra's Thane district, police said today. The woman, a gynaecologist with a BMC hospital, suffered burn injuries to her chest and groin area following which she filed a police complaint, the official said. The woman, in her complaint, has stated that the couple, who were married 11 years ago and had two children, would have frequent quarrels. She had applied for divorce, which was pending in a court, and had also filed a criminal complaint against her husband in 2016 for harassing her, the official said. "On Sunday morning, she wanted to accompany her husband to a programme but the latter got annoyed and threw hot tea on her," the official said quoting the complaint. Man kills wife, hangs self in Greater Noida apartment

A 47-year-old man allegedly killed his 34-year-old wife before committing suicide after an altercation between them today at an apartment in Greater Noida here, police said. Manisha Kohli and husband Girish Bhatnagar got married two years ago through a matrimonial site. Bhatnagar's sister was also living with them at their home in Galaxy Vega Apartments, they said. The husband used to work in Delhi but had quit his job six months ago. Some time back he got to know that this was his wife's second marriage, police said, quoting a purported suicide note found from the spot. Police said according to the note, the man also came to know that his wife suspected his relationship with his sister. Police attaches property of 3 wanted Maoists in Jharkhand

The police today attached the property of three wanted Maoists in Jharkhand's Khunti district, a police release said. The property of Lodro Lohra, a member of Sub-Zonal committee of the CPI(Maoist), 'Area Commander' Vimal Lohra alias Nilesh and 'Area Commander' Mahendra Munda alias Ritesh Munda were attached, the release said. The three Maoists carry a reward of Rs 2 lakh on their head each, it said, adding that hunt was on to apprehend them. While 18 naxal-related cases were registered against Lodro, six cases were pending against Nilesh and five against Mahendra Munda. The property attachment process were carried out in connection with a case registered against them at Arki police station in May 2017 for allegedly allegedly planting an IED in Gitilbeda jungle under Arki Police station limit to target the security personnel.

Russian internet group protests prosecutions for 'likes'

The Russian company that owns the country's most popular social media network today expressed concern at the increasing number of internet users facing prosecution for liking and sharing content online. "We see that in many regions of our country it is becoming popular to start criminal proceedings against (internet) users for likes and shares on social media," Mail.ru, which is owned by billionaire Alisher Usmanov, said in a statement. The group, which owns Russia's most popular social network VK as well as the widely used Odnoklassniki, called for the country's internet laws to be changed. "Too often the actions of law enforcement agencies clearly do not correspond to the potential threat and their reaction to posts or memes are groundlessly harsh," Mail.ru said. Gujarat HC allows man to file ITR without Aadhaar

The Gujarat High Court today allowed a man to file his income tax return (ITR) manually instead of doing it online which requires linkage to Aadhaar card, and directed the I-T department to accept the same. The ruling by a division bench of Justices M R Shah and A Y Kogje came on a petition filed by K R Koshti. The last date to file the ITR for fiscal 2017-18 is August 31, 2018. As per rules, the ITR has to be uploaded on the I-T department's web portal only after linking it to the 12-digit unique identity number (Aadhaar) of the assessee. In his petition, Koshti had sought the HC's direction to the department to accept his ITR for the assessment year 2018-19 "without insisting on quoting the Aadhaar card number or application for Aadhaar enrolment." The petitioner has challenged Section 139AA of the I-T Act, introduced by the Finance Act 2017, which provides for mandatory quoting of Aadhaar or enrolment ID of Aadhaar application form for filing ITR and also for allotment of PAN ...

Cops rescue kidnapped minor, arrest 5 including relative

The Crime Branch arrested five people and rescued a minor victim they had kidnapped on Friday, a police official said today. A close relative, who was in financial trouble, had kidnapped the child from near a building in suburban Kurla in order to extort Rs 50 lakh from his parents, the official said. He said that the relative, identified as Shabina Khan, also involved four others in the plan, all of whom have been arrested. The other accused have been identified as Sultan Khan (26), Jahangir Sheikh (28), Sohail Siddiqui (33) and Gufran Sheikh (26), he informed. "The woman called the child near a building in Kurla on Friday night. The four others kidnapped him at knife-point and then kept him, first in the house of accused Sohail Siddique and then in the office of another accused Sultan Khan, both in Govandi," the official said. Four HCs get acting chief justices

Acting chief justices were today appointed to Uttarakhand, Madras, Orissa and Bombay high courts after top judges from these courts were either elevated to the Supreme Court or made chief justices of other high courts. According to Law Ministry notification, Justice Rajeev Sharma, senor-most judge of the Uttarakhand HC, will be the acting chief justice after chief justice of the court K M Joseph was elevated to the Supreme Court last week. Justice K S Jhaveri of the Rajasthan HC has been appointed as the chief justice of the Orissa HC after incumbent Justice Vineet Saran was elevated to the top court. Till justice Jhaveri takes over, Justice Indrajit Mahanty, the senior-most judge there, will be the acting chief justice. Two arrested for robbing wigs worth Rs 25 L

Two men were arrested for allegedly robbing wigs worth Rs 25 lakh in outer Delhi's Nangloi area, police said today. The accused were identified as Mangel Sain (42) and Ajay Kumar (42) in connection with the incident that was reported on July 27, they said. During investigation, it was found that Kumar is a wig trader and had even carried out a recce of the shop 3-4 days before the incident. He had met the victims and told them that he would come back to buy 10 kg of hair. On July 27, police were informed at 8:40 am about hair robbery. Teenager gets death penalty for raping 3-year-old in MP

A local court today awarded the death sentence to a teenager for raping a three-year-old girl. Chhatarpur Additional Sessions Judge Naurin Nigam awarded capital punishment to Tauheed Musalman, 19, after convicting him under section 376 (A)(B) of the recently-introduced Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance 2018, said district prosecution officer S K Chaturvedi. He said on April 24, the culprit was caught raping the victim after he had sneaked into her house while the child's mother was talking to her brother-in-law outside. The child's mother found her in a pool of blood and Musalman was nabbed by the people and handed over to the police, Chaturvedi said. One held for extortion in Odisha

The police today arrested a criminal from Sambalpur district when he was trying to extort money from traders by terrorising them with a gun, a police officer said. The incident happened at Sindurpank Chhak in Sambalpur city, the police officer said. The criminal, a resident of Sonapali locality in the city is a history-sheeter. He is facing as many as 33 cases in different police stations across the state, the police officer said. A patrolling team of Sambalpur police spotted the criminal, he said. On seeing the police, he fired in the air and threatened to kill the traders if the police tried to nab him, the officer said. However, the police overpowered him, he said. Hry: 3 sentenced to life for raping woman

A court here today sentenced three persons to life imprisonment for raping a woman last year. Additional District and Sessions Judge, Hisar, Pankaj held them guilty for raping the woman on August 2. It also slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh each on Rishi alias Muchchal, an auto-rickshaw driver and his accomplices Sachin and Nikhil. They are all residents of Haryana's Hisar district. The court also ordered that the amount be given to the woman as compensation. The woman, a mother of three, had boarded an auto-rickshaw from a bus stand in Hisar on December 4, 2017, night to go home. Some passengers were also in the auto-rickshaw, but they got down at a village, according to the prosecution. Rishi stopped the vehicle and raped her inside the auto-rickshaw. Later, two of his accomplices also raped her. They dumped the woman near a cantonment and fled. A case under section 376D (gang rape) of the Indian Penal Code was registered in at the Woman Police Station on the complaint of the woman.

HC seeks progress report from Darjeeling SP on probe into man's death

Annoyed with the lackadaisical investigation in a case involving the death of a man, the Calcutta High Court today directed the police chief of Darjeeling district to submit a progress report in the matter within a week, failing which it might initiate proceedings against the police officers concerned. Panchayat secretary nabbed by Pb vigilance bureau

A panchayat secretary was today nabbed by the Punjab vigilance bureau for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.10 lakh, an official said. A spokesperson of the bureau said the accused Amrik Singh, posted at Rajpura in Patiala, was caught red handed on the complaint of Amlok Singh of village Laadbanjara Kalan in Sangrur district. The complainant had approached the bureau alleging that Amrik Singh along with the block development and panchayat officer, Rajpura Savinder Singh had sought Rs 1.10 lakh from him to refund a cheque of Rs 8.80 lakh given as a security deposit for mining purposes. After verifying his complaint, the sleuths laid a trap and caught Amrik Singh. The money was recovered from him in the presence of two official witnesses, the spokesperson said. Woman accuses UP tax official of raping her in hotel

Police have registered a rape case against a senior official of the Uttar Pradesh Commercial Tax Department based on a complaint made by his colleague, an official said today. The complainant has told the police that the accused allegedly raped her in a hotel here on Thursday night and then repeated the act last night, he said. She has also alleged that the accused did not allow her to leave the hotel, though she was scheduled to fly back to Delhi yesterday. The official added that the two, who are colleagues and have known each other since 2010, were staying in separate rooms in the hotel. The woman filed the complaint with the police this morning, in which she also claimed that the accused had beaten her up. "We have registered an FIR and are investigating further into the woman's complaint," said Rahul Kumar Lodha, Bhopal South Superintendent of Police. He added that a case had been registered under section 376 (rape) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Bill to restore original SC/ST atrocity law passed by LS

A bill to overturn a Supreme Court order concerning certain safeguards against arrest under the SC/ST law was unanimously passed by the Lok Sabha today. The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill 2018 rules out any provision for anticipatory bail for a person accused of atrocities against SC/STs, notwithstanding any court order. It also provides that no preliminary enquiry will be required for registering a criminal case and an arrest under this law would not be subject to any approval. Replying to the debate on the bill, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawar Chand Gehlot asserted that the NDA government favoured reservation "and will continue to be in favour reservation for SC/ST". The amendment, he said, will strengthen the legislative provisions to protect SC/ST. Court extends ED custody of man in money laundering case

A Delhi court today extended by seven days the remand of a man who is in custody of the Enforcement Directorate in a bank loan fraud case of over Rs 5,000 crore over allegations that he sent Rs 25 lakh cash to the official residence of a senior Congress leader here. Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora extended the custody of Ranjit Malik alias Johny after he was produced in the court through ED's special public prosecutor Nitesh Rana on expiry of his four-day custody.
