Lynch victim's family gets death certificate from municipality

The Ramgarh Municipality has issued the death certificate of Alimuddin Ansari, who was lynched by a mob of cow vigilantes in Ramgarh district last year, an official said today. "The Ramgarh Municipality handed over the death certificate of Alimuddin to his widow Mariyom Khatoon," said Sub-Divisional Officer, Ramgarh, Anant Kumar. "The death certificate mentions multiple injuries as the cause of death of Alimuddin," the SDO said. Khatoon had earlier said, "We had approached the RIMS in Ranchi for getting the death certificate but the authorities refused to issue it saying that Alimuddin was brought dead and the RIMS issues death certificates only for patients who died in the hospital. "The authorities suggested that we should approach the district administration for the death certificate." SC issues guidelines for conferring lawyers with senior designation

Ten months after its verdict, the Supreme Court today notified its guidelines for according 'senior' designation to lawyers and constituted a five-member permanent committee headed by Chief Justice of India to shortlist the candidates. The names will then be sent to the Full Court, comprising all the apex court judges, for a decision. The candidates will have to file an application or the committee can also recommend a candidate to the full court on its own, according to the guidelines. The apex court has notified the norms in pursuant to its judgement on October 12, last year by which it had laid down guidelines for itself and 24 high courts to govern the exercise of designating lawyers as seniors. The committee which will meet twice a year in January and July will have a permanent secretariat which would facilitate collating the details of the probable candidates. Man kills 3 sons by throwing them into river in AP: Police

A 28-year old man allegedly killed his three young sons, including a toddler, by throwing them into a deep pool of water in a river, about 70 km from here, police said. Venkatesh, a lorry driver and stated to be an alcoholic, was arrested today, they said adding the motive for the shocking act was under investigation. He had thrown the children -- aged six, three and ten months -- into the river at Gangadhara Nellore yesterday. The incident came to light after locals spotted the bodies of the children floating in the water this morning and informed police. After investigations, police arrested the man, who was allegedly found in an inebriated condition. The man had two wives as his first wife did not have any children, they said.

Maha: 3 held for attack on BJP MP's car, SC/ST Act invoked

Three persons have been arrested in connection with yesterday's attack on the vehicle of BJP MP Heena Gavit outside the district collectorate in Maharashtra's Dhule district. Gavit, who represents tribal-dominated Nandurbar Lok Sabha constituency, had escaped unhurt in the attack, allegedly by Maratha protesters. She was sitting in the car when the protesters broke its windshield. A senior police official said that around 25 people had been charged under section 307 (attempt to murder), 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting) and 341 (wrongful restraint) and other relevant provisions of IPC in connection with the incident. Parliament passes bill to provide death to child rape convicts

Parliament today passed a stringent legislation prescribing death penalty to those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years and making the law against such sexual offences harsher. The Bill replaces the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance promulgated on April 21, following an outcry over the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir and the rape of another woman at Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2018, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 30, was approved by a voice vote in the Upper House. While replying to a debate in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju assured the House that the concerns and issues raised by the members would be looked into by the government, even as he did not agree with the demand of several MPs to send the bill to a Select Committee for scrutiny. SOS Village official arrested, suspended for 'misconducting'

The SOS Children's Village today said it has suspended its arrested Guwahati assistant village director for his alleged misconduct against three minor girls who were inmates of the Village here. The police arrested the assistant village director on August 3 and he was suspended by the SOS Village authorities the same day, according to a release issued by the organisation. It said it was regrettable that such an act has allegedly been committed by an employee and SOS India would cooperate with the authorities so that justice is delivered to the girls who were aged between 12 and 13 years. The three girls have recorded their statements before the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Kamrup (Metro). The Village is providing counselling support to the three girls. SOS Children's Villages International, the umbrella organization of which SOS Children's Villages India is a member, is also closely monitoring the situation through its Regional Office for Asia, the release said.

Bail racket busted, 6 arrested in Thane

With the arrest of six people, police today claimed to have busted a major racket involving fabrication of documents and arranging guarantors to obtain bail for arrested persons from courts here in Maharashtra. Addressing a press conference, DCP (Crime) Deepak Deoraj said initial assessment revealed that around 150 people benefited from the racket and got relief from courts in the last one year. He said officials of the Ulhasnagar Crime Branch kept a vigil near the Kalyan court and on July 30 picked up three people on suspicion and their interrogation blew the lid off the racket. Three more people were arrested later for allegedly being part of the racket, he said. The gang used to arrange bogus ration cards, tax receipts of gram panchayat and also bogus guarantors for obtaining bail for arrested persons in courts at Ulhasnagar, Kalyan and Thane, the police said. CBI did not investigate Deoria shelter home

The CBI has not given any report regarding the operation and management of an illegal shelter home in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, from where 24 girls have been rescued, officials said. The girls were rescued yesterday from the shelter home after allegation of sexual exploitation of the inmates came to light, prompting the Uttar Pradesh government to swing into a damage control mode by removing the district magistrate and ordering a high-level probe. The CBI officials said that on the directions of Allahabad High Court in 2017, the agency has done an inquiry looking into the financial irregularities and misdemeanour of shelter homes running across Uttar Pradesh. CBI Spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said the agency's inquiry was limited to looking into funds allocation and financial misappropriation, if any. Two arrested in extortion case

Two persons have been arrested for reportedly demanding Rs 50 lakh from a Faridabad-based entrepreneur, a police spokesperson said today. The accused have been identified as Gurudutt and Anil, he said, adding both were working in a private company in Noida. While Gurudutt is a distant relative of the complainant, the other accused is a friend of the former. The duo made an extortion call to Ashwani Panchal and threatened him to arrange for Rs 50 lakh or else they said they would abduct his son, the spokesperson said. Man carrying reward of Rs 25k arrested

A 20-year-old man, carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 on his arrest for his alleged involvement in attempt to murder cases, was arrested along with his associate, the police said today. The accused, identified as Sumit and Harsh, are residents of Bajitpur Thakran in outer Delhi, they added. A German court today jailed a Spanish man for 10 years for repeatedly sexually abusing a young boy whose mother and stepfather sold him to paedophiles online. Three accused of brutally killing 4-yr-old Yug convicted

Three persons accused of brutally killing a four-year-old boy were convicted by a sessions court here today. The murder of little Yug had sent shock-waves across Himachal Pradesh and locals had taken out processions and candle marches in Shimla to express anger while demanding capital punishment for the accused. NIA carries out searches in Hyderabad in a 2016 ISIS case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) today carried out searches at seven places in the old city here in connection with a 2016 case related to terror outfit ISIS, an agency spokesman said. Fifth accused held in alleged cow slaughtering case

The fifth accused involved in an unauthorised cow slaughtering racket operational in Rajasthan's Alwar district was arrested, police claimed today. Govindgarh police have arrested Sattar Khan from Bharatpur district who along with Shakil and his family members was allegedly involved in unauthorised cow slaughtering and selling beef, police said. The accused was arrested yesterday from the Bharatpur district, they said. It is the fifth arrest in the case, SHO, Govindgarh police station, Dara Singh said. On July 31, police had seized nearly 220 cow skins, 82 buffaloes and 45 goats from a slaughter house suspected to be carrying out unauthorised activities, officials said. Shakil Qureshi, his wife, mother and sister-in-law were later arrested for slaughtering a cow at their residence and nearly 40 kg suspected beef was seized from them, they added. Student commits suicide in University

A 23-year-old student of a private university here allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of a building in the college premises, police said today. The deceased was identified as Vishal Bhardwaj, a resident of Balabhgarh in the Faridabad district of Haryana. He was living at a rented accommodation here, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pargat Singh said. Bhardwaj was a final year student of Fine Arts in Lovely Professional University(LPU), Chaheru, eight kilometres from here on the Phagwara-Jalandhar National Highway 1. He was rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, the ASI said. The reason behind the suicide could not be ascertained, he said, adding the body was sent to Civil hospital for post-mortem.
