Algerian-Irish man makes terror plea in Pennsylvania

An Algerian-Irish man, who last year became the first foreigner extradited to the United States on terror charges under President Donald Trump, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy. Ali Charaf Damache, 53, had been wanted in the United States for years on charges that he conspired with an American woman known as "Jihad Jane" to recruit people online to carry out attacks in Europe and South Asia. Damache -- who went by the online username "Theblackflag" -- was pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide material support and resources to terrorists, a year after he was extradited from Spain, prosecutors said. Pakistan got its first-ever woman chief justice of a high court today. Justice Tahira Safdar was named as the Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar. Nisar told at an event to launch a book by Justice (retired) Fakhrun Nisa that he was trying to right a wrong by elevating Justice Tahira as the Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court. He said that Justice Fakhrun Nisa had recently told him that she felt slighted when she was overlooked for the position of the Lahore High Court chief justice. 7 arrested for loot at Delhi Metro construction site

Seven men were arrested for their alleged involvement in a dacoity committed at a Delhi Metro construction site, police said today. The accused were identified as Ishtiyad Ahmed, (35), Imran, (26), Farhan, (22) Kamal Kumar Koli, (22), Vicky, (25), Murarilal, (22) and Nirdosh, (22), Pankaj Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (east) said. A copper connecting wire, one auto rickshaw, one double barrel gun, a mobile phone and a tempo was recovered from their possession, they added. The dacoits attacked a security guard present at the under-construction site near Akshardham Temple on July 16 and decamped with the valuables there, including copper wires. Some fellow guards reached the spot and attempted to stop the robbers. US authorities refuse to comment on reports about attack on Headley

The US authorities refused to comment today on media reports that Pakistani-American convict in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack case David Coleman Headley was battling for his life after being attacked by inmates at a detention centre. "We are not able to locate information about this individual," the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago said in a brief email response to PTI when asked about the incident. According to some media reports, Headley was attacked on July 8 by two other inmates. The reports said he suffered serious injuries and was rushed to North Evanston hospital, where he was admitted to the critical care unit. Headley has been sentenced to 35 years in prison by a US court for the 2008 terrorist attack on Mumbai that killed more than 160 people. Headley who recced various Indian cities, including Mumbai before the 26/11 attacks was arrested in 2009.

2 arrested for cheating in Delhi

Two men were arrested for allegedly posing as retired army officers and cheating around 200 people in the national capital, police said today. The accused identified as Balkishan Kushwaha, (58) and his son Rajendra Singh (32), are residents of Noida, they added. With their arrest, the police claimed to have solved four cases of cheating. The accused along with one Ompal formed a fake firm-'Ex-serviceman success vision' in 2012 and 2013 and used to introduce themselves as retired army officers. They allegedly cheated around 150-200 people in Naraina village by convincing them to invest in their firm and lured them with bonus and high returns, Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Vijay Kumar said. Bal Thackeray will case: HC cautions elder son against calling 'irrelevant' witnesses

The Bombay High Court has cautioned late Bal Thackeray's estranged son Jayadev against delaying hearing by summoning irrelevant witnesses in a will probation case of the Shiv Sena founder. Jayadev and his younger brother Uddhav Thackeray, who took over as Sena chief after death of his father, are embroiled in litigation in the high court over the validity of Bal Thackeray's will. Justice Gautam Patel reprimanded Jayadev and his lawyer on July 19 over their request to summon several journalists and editors heading the city bureau of some national and regional newspapers in the case. The judge was hearing a suit filed by Jayadev questioning the veracity of his father's will. Bal Thackeray had signed the will in December 2011 bequeathing most of the family property and assets to Uddhav Thackeray and his family. BJP MLA Gyan Dev Ahuja today said that lower rank policemen were being targeted to shield senior officers in the case of alleged lynching of 28-year-old Rakbar in Alwar and demanded a judicial inquiry into the case. Mob lynching: Centre sets up committee to suggest legal framework

The Centre on Monday set up a high-level committee to curb the menace of mob lynching.The committee headed by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba will submit its recommendations to the government within four weeks.A statement issued by the Centre read, "Government is concerned at the incidents of violence by mobs in some parts of the country. Man shot dead by 3 bike-borne men

A 35-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by three bike-borne men after being chased by them in northwest Delhi's Bharat Nagar area, police said today. The deceased, identified as Arun, was an accused in two murder cases and it is suspected he was killed over an old enmity, they said. Arun was in a car, along with his friend, when three men intercepted their vehicle. On seeing the accused, Arun pushed them aside, but they chased him and allegedly shot him dead. The accused fled while Arun was taken to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead, police said. They said that they have identified the accused and are on a lookout for them. MPCS petrol bomb attack: 4 arrested

Four persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the recent petrol bomb attack inside the Meghalalya Public Service Commission (MPSC) building, police said today. Two persons entered the office of the MPSC and hurled a petrol bomb in the room of the Commission's Secretary WAB Booth damaging documents and computers on July 10. The four arrested includes one person, who was paid Rs 50,000 by somebody to hire two others to hurl a petrol bomb, East Khasi Hills District SP Davis NR Marak said. He, however, refused to identify the arrested men and said a manhunt is on for the main culprit. The SP said the motive of the attack would be known only after the arrest of the person or persons who had paid them. Marak said the accused persons, who were arrested yesterday, have been booked for arson and trespassing into government property. They have been produced before the Court and were remanded to 10 days police custody, he said.

C'garh HC disposes of petition against state minister

The Chhattisgarh High Court today disposed of a petition demanding investigation into the alleged purchase and encroachment of a "forest land" by a state minister's family in Mahasamund district. The petition, filed by Congress leader and former mayor of Raipur Kiranmayee Nayak and her husband Vinod Nayak, was disposed of by a division bench of Chief Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi and Justice Prashant Mishra, the petitioners lawyer Satish Chandra Verma said. The public interest litigation had alleged that state Agriculture Minister Brijmohan Agrawal's wife and son had encroached on around 100 acres of land in Jalki village in Mahasamund and built a resort there, Verma said. Flight attendant Anissia Batra's in-laws questioned by police

The in-laws of flight attendant Anissia Batra, who allegedly committed suicide last week, were questioned by the police today. The couple was questioned for one-and-a-half-hour at the Hauz Khas police station today, they added. They had sought exemption from joining the probe on health grounds last week. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court today granted interim protection from arrest to the couple. Anissia (39) allegedly jumped from the terrace of her residence in south Delhi's Panchsheel Park on July 14 following which her husband, Mayank Singhvi, was arrested on the charges of dowry death on July 16. Police summons ex-Gujarat MLA in rape case

Former Gujarat BJP MLA Jayanti Bhanushali has been asked to appear before a police team in connection with a rape case against him, a senior officer said today. "We have issued summons to Bhanushali under section 160 of the CrPC in the rape case filed at the Sarthana police station in the city in which he is the accused," said Police Commissioner Satish Sharma. Summons issued under the section requires one to appear at the relevant police station to record statement. Acting on a complaint filed by a 21-year-old woman, the police on July 19 had registered an FIR against Bhanushali under various sections of the IPC related to public servant committing rape, criminal intimidation, cheating, wrongful confinement and forgery, among others. The summons, issued by DCP Leena Patil -- heading the investigation into the case -- directs the former lawmaker to immediately present himself before the Sarthana police. Man allegedly attacked while shepherding buffalo, say police

A 65-year-old man was allegedly attacked by a family while he was taking a buffalo to his home here, police said today dismissing social media reports linking the incident to cow vigilantism. Three of the accused were arrested, they said. Abdul Hamid Sheikh had purchased a buffalo from a local Gujjar for domestic use and was allegedly intercepted by Parbhat Singh at Inhar village of Ramsoo in Ramban district last evening, police said in a statement here. A scuffle followed a heated argument between the two and Singh was later joined by some other members of the family who attacked Sheikh, they said. As soon as the matter came to the notice of police, a party led by local Station House Officer immediately rushed to the spot. Sheikh was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment and a case was registered against the culprits, the statement said.
