Alwar lynching case: Police admits 'error of judgement', rules out custodial death

The Rajasthan Police today admitted "error of judgement" in handling the case of alleged lynching of 28-year-old Rakbar in Alwar, as it suspended one and transferred three policemen, even as it refuted allegations of "custodial death". Amid allegations of negligence on part of the local policemen, including for delay in taking Rakbar alias Akbar Khan to hospital, a high-level panel, set up by the state police, found four policemen guilty of dereliction in duty and suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohan Singh, who was in charge of the Ramgarh police station at that time, and shunted three constables to police lines, officials said. Since the policemen thought the victim was not serious, they decided to take him to the police station first so that the cows could be first shifted to a shelter. 2 held for duping people with fake insurance policies in Noida

Two people were arrested today for allegedly duping several people by offering them lucrative returns on fake insurance policies, a police official said. The police also seized cash worth Rs 45,800 and two mobile phones from their possession. The accused were identified as Dharmindra and Kuldeep. Acting on a complaint lodged by one Gopal Krishan, the police filed a case against the duo, the official said.

Gang of thieves busted, 5 held

With the arrest of five people, police today claimed to have busted a gang of thieves and seized 23 mobile phones from their possession, a police official said. The accused, identified as Danish, Aakash, Pankaj, Shubham and Imran, were arrested from Harola market in Noida Sector 5, he said. The police also seized one country-made pistol, two live cartridges, four knives and one hammer from their possession, the official said, adding that a probe into the matter is underway.

7 people arrested for planning to rob pilgrims in Pandharpur

Seven members of an inter-state gang were arrested for allegedly planning to rob "varkaris" who had assembled in large numbers at Pandharpur town today to mark "Ashadhi Ekadashi", a railway police official said. He said that the gang was planning to steal the valuables of pilgrims who had assembled at a temple dedicated to Lord Vitthal and Rukmini in Pandharpur, a town on the banks of Bhima river in Solapur district. The seven arrested hail from Rajasthan and Gujarat. He said that information about the gang came to light on July 21 while two other chain-snatching cases were being investigated by the railway police.

Chidambaram gets interim protection from arrest, anticipatory bail plea in another case to be heard tomorrow

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram today secured interim protection from arrest from a trial court in the Aircel-Maxis case filed by the CBI but will have to wait till tomorrow to know the fate of his anticipatory bail plea before the Delhi High Court in the ED's money-laundering case related to INX Media. In a related development that came as a reprieve for Karti Chidambaram, the son of the former union minister, the Madras High Court quashed CBI's look out circular issued against him in the INX Media case. Chennai: 22-year-old allegedly assaulted by sub-inspector

A 22-year-old boy was allegedly beaten up by a sub-inspector in Chennai for refusing to pay a bribe.Speaking to ANI, the victim, Haroon Sait, revealed that he asked the policeman to confiscate his bike, but the cop got angry and started assaulting him."I didn't have my original RC.I told police that it is too late in the night and that they can give me a receipt and confiscate my bike. I told them that I will come the next day to take the bike, but the policeman got angry and started thrashing me. He also snatched my phone'' said Haroon Sait.He further said that the sub-inspector thrashed him for no reason.Haroon also revealed that later when his family demanded justice, the police asked them not to file any case against them.He also revealed that this is the second such incident of police brutality he has faced. The previous case ended in a compromise.

Alwar lynching case: Cops face action in Rajasthan, political slugfest in national capital

Days after alleged lynching of 28-year-old Rakbar by a cow vigilante group in Alwar, four policemen faced action today amid complaints of lapses on their part, even as the Centre sought a report from the state and the Supreme Court agreed to hear a contempt plea against the Vasundhara Raje-led BJP government in Rajasthan for failing to check such incidents. Besides, the police has formed a special committee to probe allegations that Rakbar was beaten by policemen too and that there was a delay in taking him to hospital, officials said. Bill to replace ordinance on commercial courts in LS

Seeking to improve India's ranking in the ease of doing business index, a bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha today to amend a law for speedy disposal of commercial disputes. The Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts (Amendment) Bill, which will replace an ordinance, reduces the pecuniary jurisdiction of commercial courts from Rs 1 crore to Rs 3 lakh. The bill, introduced by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, allows state governments to establish commercial courts at the district level. It also seeks to reduce the pecuniary jurisdiction of commercial courts from Rs 1 crore to Rs 3 lakh. The Commercial Courts Act, 2015, provides for commercial courts and commercial divisions of high courts to settle commercial disputes with a value of at least Rs 1 crore. The proposed law would bring down the time taken from the present 1,445 days in resolution of commercial disputes of lesser value. Ease of doing business is an index of the World Bank,

4 women assaulted by mob on suspicion of being child-lifters in West Bengal

Four women were today allegedly assaulted and two of them disrobed by a mob in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on suspicion of being child-lifters, police said. The incident took place at Dawkimari village in Dhupguri block and is the fourth one this month so far in the district in which people were attacked following suspicion of being child-lifters. Last week, a mentally deranged woman was beaten up in the same block of the district on suspicion of being a child-lifter. Amitabha Maity, Jalpaiguri superintendent of police, said the four women, aged between 20 and 50 years, were not locals and the mob assaulted them as it they not believed the answers the women gave to the questions posed to them. One woman had reportedly said she was looking for a relative, another said she was visiting a relative, while the third woman said she sold clothes door-to-door and the fourth one said she had come to a neighbourhood bank, the police said. Man ends life after killing wife, 2 minor sons

A man killed his wife and two minor sons allegedly due to a strained relationship with her and later committed suicide, police said today. The incident came to light when the 12-year-old daughter of the couple informed her grandfather, following which the police registered a case, they said. According to a statement issued by the office of the UP DGP, "Yesterday night, Madhav Murari Singh (a resident of Kushinagar district) killed his wife Suman, sons Mitram Singh (10) and Kannu Singh (two-and-a-half year). "There was strain in the relationship between the husband and the wife for many days." Singh worked as chief pharmacist at a community health centre. He had filed for divorce with his wife in a local court, the police said.

Truck carrying alcohol stolen in JK, found within 24 hrs

A truck loaded with liquor bottles worth Rs 21 lakhs was stolen in Jammu and Kashmir, police said today adding that it was recovered within 24 hours. A complaint was received by police station Chenani regarding the theft of the lorry carrying Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) bottles yesterday, a police officer said. A case was registered and raids were conducted at different suspected locations. The stolen vehicle was finally recovered from Ramkote village of Kathua district today, he said. However, the officer said that the thief managed to escape from the spot taking advantage of darkness. Police teams have been dispatched to different locations to arrest the culprits, he said.

Haryana STF arrests 13 wanted criminals

The Special Task Force (STF) of Haryana police has arrested 13 wanted criminals and seized huge quantity of illicit arms as well as narcotics during the past six months, police officials said today. The Haryana police is planning to strengthen STF by inducting 100 highly-qualified people to tackle cyber crime, Director General of Police (DGP) B S Sandhu said. "The STF has arrested 13 wanted criminals and seized huge quantity of illicit arms as well as narcotics," he said in an official statement issued here. Giving details about the seizure of illicit arms and narcotics, Additional Director General of Police (crime) P K Agarwal said STF sleuths have recovered 50 country-made pistols, one revolver, one rifle and four pistols. Two women were among six members of banned CPI (Maoists) who surrendered to the police in the district today, a top police official said. Tambelu Lakshmi (20) alias Janaki and Pangi Sheelu (20) alias Latha, of the Pedabayalu Area Committee, gave themselves up, citing 'harsh'treatment by their leadership besides ill-health, distrit Rural SP Rahul Dev Sharma told reporters here. Centre supports in SC plea against female genital mutilation in Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community

The Centre today told the Supreme Court that it supported the petition opposing the practice of female genital mutilation in the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra agreed to hear on July 30 the plea filed by Delhi-based lawyer Sunita Tiwari and asked the parties to file their written submissions. The bench also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud asked the parties to advance arguments on the plea and on the aspect as to whether it can also be referred to a Constitution bench. "I am supporting the petitioner. They can begin their arguments on Monday," Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, told the court. The Rajasthan Police today suspended an assistant sub-inspector and sent three other constables to police lines for "delay" in taking Rakbar alias Akbar Khan, who was allegedly lynched by a mob on suspicion of cow smuggling, to a hospital, officials said. The action was taken after a video purportedly showing ASI Mohan Singh, who was posted at the Ramgarh police station, admitting to his "mistake", went viral. Huge quantity of explosives seized, two persons arrested

Police today seized huge quantity of explosives and arrested two persons in this connection in Pakur district, a senior police officer said. The police seized 10,000 pieces of gelatin sticks and 3,000 pieces of detonators from Basmata village in the district, Superintendent of Police, Shailendra Prasad Burnwal said. The SP said on a tip-off that some criminals were bringing in large quantity of explosives from West Bengal to Pakur district, a Quick Response Team (QRT) was formed. The QRT team stopped two persons riding a motorcycle but they abandoned the two-wheeler and tried to flee. But police caught hold of them and found that they were carrying two sacks full of gelatin and detonators. Following information provided by the two arrested persons, police conducted raid in some areas bordering West Bengal and seized five sacks full of detonators and gelatin, the SP added.

Colombian gang had used fake passports, hatched plan in Bogota

The five Colombian burglars, who were arrested a week ago, had come to India on fake passports and hatched their plan to rob apartments here at Bogota, police said today. The gang members are Jose Edwardo (40), Gustavo Adolfo (47), Yair Alberto (45), Eduard Alexis (38) and a woman, Kinberly Jhoarya (30). They were involved in at least six cases of burglary in posh localities like Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Sadashivanagar and HSR Layout, police said. Police had seized stolen booty worth Rs 80 lakh from them, which include 950 grams of gold ornaments, foreign currencies,expensive watches, pens and two cars.
