Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar will be the Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court, Pakistan's top judge announced today, paving way for her to become the first woman chief justice of any court in the conservative Muslim-majority nation. "Madam Tahira Safdar will be the next chief justice of BHC," Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar said today at a book launch in Lahore, where he was invited as the chief guest, the Express Tribune reported. Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Muhammad Noor Meskanzai is scheduled to retire on on August 31. Justice Tahira will replace Justice Meskanzai. Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation spokesperson Dhananjay Harshad said that civic chief Ravindra Khebudkar had ordered that a case be filed against the man for misguiding people in the run-up to the civic polls. Two persons, who were allegedly involved in the killing of three people after forcing them into unnatural sex, were arrested today, an official said. The duo was also allegedly involved in the kidnapping of a minor boy and forcing him to engage in unnatural sex with them, he said. With this, the police have claimed to have solved four cases of kidnapping, murder, unnatural sex and robbery filed in three police stations of the city in the last 14 months. An accused in an attempt to murder case, who escaped from police custody on Saturday, was re-arrested today in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, an official said. Rohit Singh, 26, escaped from the lock up after feigning sickness on July 21 leading to the suspension of a sub-inspector and prompting a manhunt to arrest him, the official said. A fresh case in connection with his escape was registered. After hectic efforts the accused was arrested from the Reasi town, taking the number of those arrested in connection with the particular attempt to murder case to three, he said. The case against the trio was registered on July 16 after Rohit Singh, his brother Rahul and another person Shivtan Singh, residents of a village in Reasi district, allegedly attacked and injured three officials of the AFCON construction company, the official said. A special POCSO court here today sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a seven-year-old girl. Special judge of POSCO court Girish Kumar Aggarwal convicted Jugdish Singh Rajput alias Tillu, a resident of Kaithunipole area, said Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Kamal Kant Sharma. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh, he said. The man raped the girl on July 7, 2014 while she was returning home from her tuition in the evening, the SPP said. The matter came to light when the victim narrated the incident to her parents following which a case was lodged in Kaithunipole police station. One person was arrested who was wanted in connection with abduction of policemen in Khunti district of Jharkhand in February, police said today. Following information that the accused, identified as Surendra Nath Samad alias Surendra Singh Munda, was at Hembram Bazaar in Arki police station area, policemen reached there yesterday, Superintendent of Police Ashwani Kumar Sinha said. Samad then fled to a nearby jungle from where he was arrested, Sinha said. Arki police station Officer-in-charge Chandra Shekhar Azad said Samad allegedly led a group of villagers to set up Pathalgadi in Kurunga village in February by misleading the villagers about the tribal custom. A court here today granted bail to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Arabul Islam, who was arrested on May 12, two days before the panchayat polls in West Bengal, in connection with a murder case. Paresh Karmakar, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Baruipur court in South 24 Parganas district, granted bail to Islam on a bond of Rs 20,000. Islam's counsels prayed for his bail, claiming that he was seriously ill and was in custody for 72 days. The counsels submitted that the TMC leader was undergoing treatment at the state-run SSKM Hospital. Islam was arrested on charges of murder and arson on May 12, following violence at Bhangor in South 24 Parganas district. History-sheeter Govind Rana was killed in an encounter with police on Monday in Nalasopara area of Maharashtra's Palghar district.According to police sources, Rana attacked a police personnel belonging to Vasai Crime Branch in Palghar district at 2:35 pm and was shot by the police in response.Rana was later rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.Two police personnel are also injured in the encounter and are currently being treated at a hospital in the area.Rana had several cases against him in Nalasopara and other police stations of Palghar and Mumbai.

A 42-year old AIADMK local level functionary was hacked to death by a gang of around ten people on a road in broad daylight at Sirkazhi in the district today, police said. Rames Babu, a contractor and AIADMK's Kollidam block students wing deputy secretary, died on the spot after being attacked with sickles by the unidentified gang members, who later fled the scene, they said. Two men wanted in connection with the killing of an RTI activist in Telangana in May were arrested here, police said today. The Crime Branch of Mumbai Police arrested Rajeshwar Goud Elimati (46) and Rajayya Kasarppu (51) from their homes in suburban Bandra and Jogeshwari, respectively, yesterday an official said. He said the duo, who owned toddy shops in Mumbai, were wanted for the killing of Right to Information (RTI) activist Podeti Satyanarayan Narsa Goud. The Supreme Court today said that a lawmaker, whose conviction in a criminal case has not been stayed by an appellate court, would stand disqualified from the membership of the House. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also reserved its verdict on a plea filed by NGO 'Lok Prahari' which alleged that the 2013 verdict of the apex court in the Lilly Thomas case was being flouted by the Members of Parliament, MLAs and MLCs, who continue to hold their memberships even after their convictions in criminal cases. The apex court, on July 10, 2013, had struck down section 8(4) of the Representation of the People Act (RPA) that gave a convicted lawmaker the power to remain in office on the ground that appeals have been filed within three months of conviction. "The only question is about the vires of section 8(4) of the Representation of the People Act (RPA) and we hold that it is ultra vires and that the disqualification takes place from the date of conviction," the court had said.
