Activists have criticized a six-month prison sentence given to a 15-year-old Indonesian girl who had an abortion after being raped by her brother. A district court in Jambi province also sentenced the girl's 18-year-old brother on Thursday to two years' imprisonment. Easmus Napitupulu of the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform said the court did not take into account the reason for the abortion. Zubaidah of the Embun Pagi Women School in Jambi said the girl's sentence was unfair and violated the Child Protection Law. Abortion is illegal in Indonesia but is allowed in cases of rape. But it must take place within 1 1/2 months of becoming pregnant and be performed by professionals. The girl had her abortion when she was six months' pregnant.
The Bombay High Court expressed annoyance today over the non-functioning of the Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT), whose premises here were closed following a fire over a month ago, and sought to know "if the finance minister of the country was sleeping" over the shutdown of a key body. The court said while Mumbai was considered the financial capital of the country, the city-based DRT, which dealt with debt-recovery cases involving banks, financial institutions and their customers, was non-functional for over a month. A woman was allegedly lynched by a mob near here in Madhya Pradesh on suspicion that she was a child-lifter, police said today. The woman, who appeared to be "mentally unstable", was killed by the mob in Bhosh village under the Morwa police station on July 19, Morwa Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) K S Dwivedi told PTI over the phone. Believed to be aged between 25 to 30 years, the woman is yet to be unidentified, he said. The lynching took place amid rumours on WhatsApp that child-lifters were on the prowl in rural areas of the district, the officer said. The rumours were circulating for the last one month, Dwivedi said. Twelve people were arrested yesterday in connection with the lynching incident and produced today in a local court, which sent them to jail, Dwivedi said. A 21-year-old group administrator of instant messaging service WhatsApp is behind bars here for the last five months, following an alleged objectionable message posted in the group by a member. A 17-year-old boy from Talen town of Rajgarh district in Madhya Pradesh allegedly posted an anti-national message on the WhatsApp group on February 14, Talen police station in-charge Narmada Prasad Dahima said today. Some people took strong objection to it and filed a police complaint. "Acting on the complaint, the police summoned the boy and the then group administrator, Raja Gurjar," Dahima said. The decomposed body of a 32-year-old man with a broken neck was found in Rajasthan's Sikar district today, police said. The body was found in Roop Pura village and the deceased was identified as Maan Singh. Family members have been informed and body is kept at a mortuary, Thoi police station Station House Officer Babulal Gurjar said. Girls of a government-funded shelter home here have alleged that one of their fellow inmates was beaten to death and buried at the premises of the facility, and several were raped. Following the allegations, the Bihar Police has launched a probe and dug up the grounds of the shelter home, but are yet to find the body. Muzaffarpur SSP Harpreet Kaur said, "We are carrying out the excavation based on the statement given by one of the girls. The spot has been identified by her." More than 40 girls are lodged at the shelter home and medical reports suggest that more than half of them may have had sexual intercourse at some point of time, she said. The SSP said, "Nothing noteworthy has so far been found from the site during the excavation. However, the area of excavation might be enlarged after further examination of the girl who made the allegation.

A statue of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar was allegedly desecrated by unidentified persons in Madhya Pradesh's Shajapur district, a police official said today. The statue, installed on outskirts of Kalisindh village, located about 28 kms from the district headquarters, was desecrated by some persons last night, Bercha police station in-charge Rakesh Nain said. Some locals informed the police after they found an arm and spectacles of the statue broken. Shajapur district's Superintendent of Police Anurag Sharma and other officials reached the spot to look into the matter. A police team has been formed to search for culprits, Sharma said. A number of Dalits gathered at the spot following the incident. Heavy security has been deployed in the area, Nain said. Based on a complaint lodged by local resident Avinash Chouradia, the police have registered a case against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the IPC, he said, adding that an investigation is underway.

The Rajasthan police today set up a high-level committee to probe the allegations of delay against the Alwar police in taking Akbar Khan to a hospital after he was allegedly lynched by a group of people of suspicion of cow smuggling. "Allegations of delay in taking Khan to the hospital and policemen crossing their limits have come to fore. A four-member committee of senior police officials is in Alwar to enquire into the matter," state Director General of Police (DGP) O P Galhotra said.
