Chidambaram moves HC seeking anticipatory bail in ED's case related to INX Media

Former Union minister P Chidambaram approached the Delhi High Court today, seeking anticipatory bail in the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) money-laundering case related to INX Media. The plea was mentioned before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar, which directed that it be listed before the judge concerned today itself. Justice A K Pathak is scheduled to hear the plea in the post-lunch session. The petition, filed through advocates Pramod Kumar Dubey and Arshdeep Singh, submitted that no role was attributed to the Congress leader in the FIR and he was apprehending arrest by the ED. The plea said the former Union finance minister had already got protection from arrest in the CBI's case related to INX Media. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had earlier told the court that Chidambaram was needed for custodial interrogation. Kejriwal welcomes SC order on protests at Jantar Mantar

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today welcomed the Supreme Court's order that said there cannot be a "complete ban" on holding protests and sit-ins at places like Jantar Mantar and Boat Club. The chief minister said attempts to convert Delhi into a police state was "dangerous" for democracy. "I welcome the Hon'ble Supreme Court verdict upholding peaceful right to protest in central Delhi. "Attempts to convert Delhi into a police state is dangerous for democracy and rightly struck down by (the) Hon'ble Supreme Court," Kejriwal tweeted. Earlier in the day, a bench comprising justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said there was a need to strike a balance between conflicting rights such as the right to protest and the right of citizens to live peacefully. "There cannot be a complete ban on holding protests at places like Jantar Mantar and Boat Club (near India Gate)," the bench said, while directing the Centre to frame guidelines on the matter.

Bill providing for stringent punishment in rape cases in LS

The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2018, which provides for stringent punishment including death penalty for those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years, was today introduced in the Lok Sabha. The amendment bill, once approved by Parliament, will replace the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance promulgated on April 21, following an outcry over the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir and the rape of another woman in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. Introducing the bill, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said the recent incidents of rape and gangrape of women under the age of 16 years and 12 years have shaken the conscience of the entire nation. Therefore, the offences of rape and gangrape of women under the age of 16 years and 12 years required effective deterrence through legal provisions of more stringent punishment, he said. SC to hear contempt pleas against Rajasthan govt on Aug 28 in lynching case

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear on August 28 the pleas seeking contempt action against the Rajasthan government in the recent mob lynching case at Alwar. In the contempt pleas filed by Tushar Gandhi and Congress leader Tehseen Poonawala, they alleged that incidents of mob lynching and vigilantism were taking place despite an apex court verdict in this regard. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra said it would hear the petitions on August 28. Presenting their case in front of the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, Gandhi and Poonawala sought contempt action against the Rajasthan government. The petitioners urged that directions be issued to follow the apex court verdict in letter and spirit. The bench said it would take up the matter along with the main case on August 28. Air hostess death: Interim protection granted to Anissia Batra's in-laws

The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim protection from arrest to in-laws of air hostess Anissia Batra who allegedly committed suicide on July 13.The court has also sought a status report from Delhi Police.The high court said that the parents of Mayank Singhvi, the husband of air hostess cannot be arrested until it hears their anticipatory bail plea on August 2.The Delhi-based air hostess allegedly jumped off the terrace of her home after a heated argument with his husband.Before her death, the air hostess had allegedly sent a message to her friend on WhatsApp, stating that she was locked up in a room by Singhvi. She had also asked her friend to inform the police of the same.On July 16, the Delhi Police arrested Singhvi and subsequently sent him to a 14-day judicial custody in the case.

Chidambaram files anticipatory bail plea in Aircel-Maxis, INX media cases

Former finance minister P Chidambaram on Monday filed a fresh anticipatory bail plea in Delhi's Patiala House Court in Aircel-Maxis money laundering case.The matter will be heard at 2 pm today.On July 10, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a detailed reply in the case and opposed Chidambaram's previous anticipatory bail.In its statement, the ED said that they have come to a bonafide conclusion that under anticipatory bail, it will not be possible to reach the truth.The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on July 19 filed a fresh charge-sheet in the Aircel-Maxis case in a Delhi Court against 18 accused, including Chidambaram, his son, Karti, and select government officials (serving and retired).In its new charge-sheet, the CBI said that two sets of money trails were discovered regarding Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance.The Aircel-Maxis deal case, which emerged out of 2G spectrum cases, pertains to a FIPB clearance, granted to firm M/S Global Communication ..

Devotee crushed to death during Ulta Ratha Yatra celebrations

A devotee has been crushed to death under the wheels of a chariot of Lord Jagannath in Pokhariapada village of Odisha's Kendrapara district, a police officer said. Nirakar Jena, a man in his 60s, was pulling the chariot's rope yesterday during the Ulta Ratha Yatra (return of Lord Jagannath's chariot) celebrations in the Pattamundai police station area of the district when he slipped and fell on the ground and came under its wheels, he said. A case of unnatural death has been registered in this connection, he added.

Nine more inmates of Byculla jail fall sick, total 104 in last 4 days

Nine more inmates of the Byculla prison here have fallen sick due to suspected food poisoning, taking the total count of the affected prisoners, most of them women, to 104 over the last four days, an official said today. The nine prisoners were hospitalised yesterday after they complained of stomach pain and dehydration, J J Hospital's medical superintendent Dr Sanjay Surase said. On July 20, 81 inmates of the Byculla women's prison were admitted in the state-run J J Hospital after they fell ill, with officials suspecting that food poisoning, contaminated water or reaction from a medicine as the reason behind their illness. The number rose to 95 by Saturday, with more inmates complaining of similar symptoms. While most of the prisoners were discharged, 15 inmates, including 13 women, were still in the hospital, Surase said. Among the 13 women, two were pregnant, a police official said. An investigation was on to ascertain the exact cause of the illness of the inmates, Surase said. An .

Assam: DSP arrested in job-for-cash scam

Assam Police have arrested Deputy Superintendent Kavita Das from Duliajan for her alleged involvement in Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) job-for-cash scam.Superintendent of Police Dibrugarh Surajeet Singh Panesar also confirmed the same on Sunday."Dibrugarh Police has arrested DSP Kavita Das from Duliajan. She is an accused in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) job-for-cash scam," said Panesar, Superintendent of Police.On July 19, Assam police arrested Pallavi Sharma, daughter of Bharatiya Janata Party MP RP Sharma, and 18 other government officers in connection with the case.Earlier, police had filed charge sheet against former APSC chairman Rakesh Kumar Paul and few other members in the case.Police had also identified 25 officers of the 2015 batch, who had bribed APSC officials to get jobs through doctored answer scripts.Out of those 25 officials, 13 were in Assam Civil Services, seven in Assam Police Services and the rest are in allied civil services.

Man arrested for raping minor, uploading video of the act

A 22-year-old man has been arrested at Shahpur here for allegedly raping a minor girl and sharing a video of the act, police said today. A case was registered against Shamsad following a complaint by the victim's family, they said. Toronto police say 9 people shot, shooter dead

Toronto police says nine people have been shot and the shooter is dead after a gunman opened fire in the Toronto neighborhood known as Greektown. Toronto police tweets that the condition of the victims is not known yet and said a young girl is one of the victims. They say the dead shooter is not among the nine victims. Alwar lynching: Eyewitnesses allege foul play by police

1 dead after shooting at Mormon church in Nevada

Authorities say one person is dead and another injured following a shooting at a Mormon church in Nevada today. Fallon Police Chief Kevin Gehman says 48-year-old John Kelley O'Connor walked into the church, opened fire then walked home. TV station KOLO reports that O'Connor surrendered after authorities called his home and asked. Gehman said O'Connor appears to have targeted one person and not the church, which had as many as 50 people at the time. No motive was immediately known. Woman approaches police with foetus in bag, alleges rape

A 19-year-old woman turned up at police station here with a foetus in a bag and demanded action against a man who, she alleged, had raped her and then forced her to abort the baby. A case of rape has been registered against the 22-year-old accused, identified as Manoj, Hasanpur Kotwali SHO Devendra Sharma said. The accused is on the run. "We have registered a case based on the complaint of the woman's family and raids were being conducted to arrest the accused, said Ajay Kumar, circle officer of police of Hasanpur. The foetus has been sent to a forensic lab for examination, he said. The woman, who was accompanied by her mother, told police that the accused raped her at gunpoint five months ago and had threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed it.
