A 22-year-old married woman from Chandigarh has alleged that she was raped by 40 men for four consecutive days after being held captive at a guest house in Morni area of Haryana's Panchkula district, following which three people were arrested, police said today. In a complaint lodged with the Chandigarh Police at Manimajra police station yesterday, the woman alleged that she was held captive for four days where the accused took turns to rape her. The woman's husband told reporters that she was promised job at the guest house by a person known to them, adding she was drugged for four days, raped and threatened that she and her husband would be "eliminated" if she revealed the incident to anyone. While, the Chandigarh Police lodged an FIR in Manimajra police station after the woman approached them with the complaint, the case was being transferred to the Panchkula Police, under whose jurisdiction the alleged incident took place. Three persons, including two rape accused, were today arrested in separate operations in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, police said. They were evading arrest for several years and were nabbed from different villages on the basis of specific information, Senior Superintendent of Police (Rajouri) Yougal Manhas said. One of the absconders, Mohammad Qayoom, resident of Bata-Dhurian village of Mendhar, was wanted in a rape case registered against him in 2013 and was arrested from Manjakote area, he said. The officer said Mohammad Qasim, of Pargal village of Darhal, was also facing rape charges and was evading arrest since 2016. He was arrested from Somwali Dhok in the higher reaches of Darhal, Manhas added. The third person was arrested from the Panja Chowk area of Rajouri, the SSP said.
A 56-year old man, scheduled to board a flight to Madurai from here, suffered a heart attack as soon as he entered the airport today, officials said. The passenger, Kannadasan, fainted soon after he entered the airport premises to board a domestic flight along with some members of his family, they said. A doctor attached to the airport, who examined him, said he suffered a heart attack. He rendered preliminary medical assistance before rushing him to a hospital by an ambulance, airport officials said.
A police constable was run over and killed by a speeding mini-truck in East Singhbhum district, a police officer said today. Pramod Kumar Singh was run over by the mini-truck near the Jamshedpur block office under Parsudih police station late last night, the officer said. He was rushed to Tata Main Hospital but doctors declared him brought dead. Police has confiscated the vehicle but the driver managed to escape. Senior Superintendent of Police, Anoop Birtharay said the driver of the vehicle abandoned it and fled.

The Supreme Court today rejected the bail plea of a 16-year-old boy, accused of killing a seven-year-old student in a private school in Gurgaon, saying that the alleged crime fell under the category of "heinous offence". The accused, who has been treated as an adult under a new law, claimed that he could not be awarded death or life sentence for the alleged offence of murder in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act. A bench of justices R F Nariman and Indu Malhotra rejected the plea, saying the alleged crime fell under the category of "heinous offence" and life sentence could be given with a possibility of remission. Advocate Gaurav Agarwal, appearing for the accused, who was a student in the school, argued that the law says that no child shall be sentenced to death or punished with life imprisonment. He said that if the child, who is just 16 years old, is to be sentenced for life with a possibility of remission, then the alleged crime does not fall under the category of "heinous .
The bodies of a 30-year-old married woman and a 19-year-old man were found hanging from a tree in Rajasthan's Barmer district today, police said. The victims were identified as Kamla and Devaram, they said. Kamla was married for the last 12 years and had two children. She was allegedly having an affair with Devaram and their family members objected to it, Dhorimanna police station SHO Man Manth Arha said. Devaram was a brother-in-law to Kamla, he said. The duo had left their residence last night and their bodies were found hanging from a tree a few kilometres from their house, Arha said. A case of suicide was registered and investigation in the matter underway, the SHO said, adding that the bodies were handed over to family members after postmortem.
A 19-year-old youth was today arrested for allegedly sexually abusing two minor boys at an orphanage near here, two years ago. Jose Maveli, director of the Janaseva Sisubhavan at Aluva and an employee were also arrested for allegedly covering up the sexual assault, crime branch officials said. They have been charged under various sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and Juvenile Justice Act, they said. Officials probing the case said the incident came to light when they met the children as they visited the orphanage as part of investigation into another case. Based on the statements of two minor boys, the teenager was booked for committing the offence, they said. Maveli and the employee were booked for not informing childline or police about the incident after they came to know about it, they added. The children had informed the police that Maveli and the employee were aware of the ordeal they underwent at the youth's hands.

The Calcutta High Court today quashed 12 cases against BJP leader and former railway minister Mukul Roy in the cash-for-job scam in the railways. Roy's counsel claimed that the allegations were not substantiated and absurd in nature. It was also stated before the court that though the complaints claimed that the alleged incidents of cash for job took place in 2012, the complainants had filed the criminal cases only this year. Roy's counsel Subhasish Dasgupta stated that there was no plausible explanation on part of the complainants for the delay of six years to make the allegations. The West Bengal government, however, opposed the prayer for quashing of cases against Roy. Hearing both the parties, Justice Shivakant Prasad rejected the 12 cases filed against Roy. Out of the 12 cases, 10 case were filed at Bijpur police station and one each at Naihati and Noapara in North 24 Parganas district. A former Trinamool Congress leader, Roy was the railway minister in 2012.
A local court here today awarded seven years of imprisonment to a father-son duo for cheating a foreigner in Gaya district. The court of Assistant Session Judge Ramanand Ram held Tarkeshwar Prasad Yadav (father) and Sanjay Kumar (son) guilty of cheating and criminal breach of trust. The duo was awarded two years jail and a fine of Rs 2000 each under IPC's section 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and seven years imprisonment plus a fine of Rs 3000 each under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), Prosecution Officer Alok Kumar said. Both the sentences would run concurrently. During the hearing, Kumar had submitted that the victim, N Robert from Scotland gave Rs 40 lakh to the duo in 2015 to construct a building at Bodh Gaya for her NGO. However, the accused did not hand over the building following which, Robert filed a complaint against them.
A Delhi court today refused to grant protection from arrest to the parents of the husband of a female flight attendant, who allegedly committed suicide in south Delhi's Panchsheel Park last week. Sushma Singhvi and R S Singhvi, the parents of Mayank Singhvi, who is in judicial custody in the death case of his wife Anissia Batra (39), were denied anticipatory bail by the court after it was told that the allegations against them were serious, Ishkaran Singh Bhandari, the lawyer of the woman's parents, said. Additional Sessions Judge Neelam Singh dismissed the application of the Singhvis after Bhandari told her that Anissia's parents had filed a complaint against her in-laws, accusing them of threatening her. The complainants also claimed before the court that it wasn't a suicide but murder. A city court today awarded prison terms to two female teachers of a noted school here after holding them guilty of unnatural sexual act with a five-year-old girl student two years ago. Special POCSO judge Ravindra Nath Tripathi had convicted the two teachers-- Nutan Joseph and Indu Anand -- on July 11, Special Public Prosecutor Suresh Chandra Prasad said, adding the quantum of punishment was announced today. The judge handed down 10 years imprisonment to Nutan Joseph while Indu Anand was given a seven-year jail term, he said. The teachers, who have been found guilty under various sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, have also been slapped with a fine of Rs 20,000 each, Prasad added. The Delhi High Court today set aside an order of Jawaharlal Nehru University's appellate authority imposing a penalty on its former students union president Kanhaiya Kumar in connection with a 2016 incident in which alleged anti-India slogans were raised at an event. Justice Siddharth Mridul said the JNU office's order was "unsustainable on innumerable counts" after which the counsel for the varsity submitted that they are recalling the decision. The court remanded the matter back to the appellate authority to conduct de novo proceedings in accordance with law. Kumar had moved the high court on July 17 seeking direction to quash the office order of July 4 passed by JNU through the chief proctor. Police today informed the Kerala High Court that it has received 'crucial' information in the case related to the missing of a 20-year old woman since March this year and sought more time to complete the investigation. The submission was made before Justice Sunil Thomas during the hearing of a petition by the brother of the woman seeking a CBI investigation. Police also submitted a report on progress of the investigation so far, following which the Judge adjourned the matter to August 2 for next hearing. The woman, a second-year B.Com student, went missing on March 22 while on her way to her aunt's house at Mundakkayam in Kottayam district.
