Pak approves open trial of Sharif in 2 graft cases

The federal cabinet, headed by Pakistan's caretaker prime minister Justice (retd) Nasir-ul-Mulk, on Wednesday approved to hold an open trial of jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in regards to the Al-Azizia and the Flagship Investment cases.The cabinet also revoked an earlier decision to conduct proceedings against Sharif inside the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, where he and his daughter Maryam Nawaz are currently lodged, Geo TV reported.The accountability court, which is hearing the corruption references against the Sharif family, will next hear the remaining two cases (Al-Azizia and Flagship Investment) on July 30.The court is also waiting for the orders from the Islamabad High Court (IHC), where the Sharif family has made a plea challenging Sharif and Maryam's conviction in the Avenfield properties case and the transfer of the cases to another court.While Sharif and his UK-based sons, Hussain and Hasan are named in all the three corruption cases - Avenfield reference, Flagship .

Man who plotted to kill British PM found guilty

A British man on Wednesday was found guilty of plotting an assassination attack on Prime Minister Theresa May at her Downing Street residence.The man, Naa'imur Zakariyah Rahman, 20, was convicted at the Old Baily court for committing an act of terrorism.Rahman, who has been on trial from past few months, revealed to the police officers of assassinating the prime minister in May in an Islamic State (IS)-inspired attack, Anadolu News Agency reported.In November last year, he was arrested after he told undercover officers that he was planning to launch an assault at Downing Street and was provided with explosives and a suicide vest.Apart from Rahman, Mohammed Aqib Imran, 22, was also found guilty after a terrorist handbook was recovered from him earlier, as per the report.Rahman told the court that he motivated Imran to join the IS in Libya.It should be noted that Britain recently suffered a spate of terror attacks last year.

Sharif, Maryam likely to be moved to Sihala rest house

Former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz are likely to be shifted from Adiala jail in Rawalpindi to the rest house of Sihala Police Training College in Islamabad.Geo TV quoted sources as saying that all arrangements have been made to move the father-daughter duo to Sihala rest house. Assam cash-for-job scam: BJP MP's daughter, 18 others arrested

Assam police on Wednesday arrested Pallavi Sharma, daughter of BJP MP RP Sharma, and 18 other government officers in connection with the cash-for-job scam of Assam Public Service Commission (APSC).Earlier, police had filed charge sheet against former Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) chairman Rakesh Kumar Paul and few other members in connection with the case.Additional Superintendent of Police of Dibrugarh Police, Surajeet Singh Panesar told ANI, "So far 63 officers have been arrested in the case. The names of former Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur have been removed from the Exit Control List (ECL) by Pakistan's Interior Ministry."Zardari and Talpur's names were removed from the ECL on the directives of the interior secretary. Sharif getting all facilities he is entitled to: Punjab govt

Jailed former premier Nawaz Sharif is getting all the facilities he is entitled to under the law, the government in Pakistan's Punjab province said today. The clarification was issued after former chief minister and PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif complained that his elder brother Sharif has been kept in "abysmal conditions" in the Adiala jail. Bill seeks to include offence of human trafficking in MPDA

The state government will bring a bill in the ongoing Monsoon session to include human trafficking in the list of crimes covered under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act, Minister of State for Home Ranjit Patil said today. He was answering questions in the Legislative Council about rise in the number of cases of missing girls. To curb the cases of trafficking of minors, the government plans to include the offence of human trafficking in the MPDA, he said. One reason for the increase in the number of cases related to missing girls in Mumbai was a Supreme Court order which mandates that every case of a minor girl going missing must be treated as a case of abduction, the minister said. Between 2013 to 2017, 5,056 girls under the age of 18 went missing from Mumbai, and 4,758 of them were found, leaving 298 unsolved cases, he said. Will take steps after legal view to scrap Navi Mumbai land

The Maharashtra government would seek the view of the law and judiciary department and take steps to scrap all transactions related to a Navi Mumbai land deal, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in the Legislative Assembly today. The government has already stayed transactions in the wake of the allegations of "scam" raised by the Congress-led opposition. The Congress had alleged that the land worth Rs 1,767 crore, meant for eight project affected people (PAP) of the Koyna dam, was given to a private builder for just Rs 3.60 crore. The party had also claimed that the transaction had the "blessings" of Fadnavis. Condemning the rape of a 11-year old girl here by several men, Chief Minister K Palaniswami today said tough action would be taken against perpetrators of such a serious offence. The seventh standard hearing impaired girl was allegedly raped multiple times over the past seven months in an apartment complex here with police arresting 17 of her suspected tormentors. The man at the centre of a sexual assault scandal that shook the Nobel Literature Prize giving body, which postponed this year's award, will go on trial in September on rape charges, a Swedish court said. French cultural figure Jean-Claude Arnault, who is married to a former member of the Swedish Academy which selects Nobel literature laureates, has been charged with raping a woman in Stockholm on two occasions in 2011. The Stockholm district court told AFP his hearings will take place on September 19, 20 and 24. According to the charge sheet, seen by AFP, the 71-year-old allegedly forced the victim -- who was in a state of "intense fear" -- to have oral sex and intercourse in a Stockholm apartment on October 5, 2011. One arrested with fake currency in JK's Rajouri

A person was arrested today after fake currency in new denomination notes, worth Rs 41,900 recovered from him in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police officer said. Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, Yougal Manhas said the police was busy in routine vehicle checking at Jaglanoo village of Kandi when they noticed a pedestrian moving around in suspicious circumstances. "On noticing a police party, he tried to flee but was chased and arrested," the officer said, adding that the accused was identified as Altaf Hussain of Muradpur village During his frisking, the SSP said, a bundle of fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 41,900 in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 200 were recovered. He was arrested and a case under relevant sections of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) registered against him, Manhas said. Manhas said the accused was being questioned so that it may lead to the arrest of other people involved in the fake currency racket in the district.

Two held for duping senior citizen on pretext of higher returns on expired insurance polices

A man and his female associate were arrested for allegedly duping a senior citizen of Rs 80 thousand on the pretext 0f higher returns on expired and discontinued insurance policies, police said today. The accused identified as Vishal Aggarwal, a resident of Ghaziabad and his associate Pooja, (25), Noida resident, were arrested from Ghaziabad last week, said Chinmoy Biswal, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (south east) said. A complaint was filed by a 92-year-old man that on June 26, he received a call from Pooja who told him that in 2012 he had purchased an insurance policy from HDFC and paid only one instalment. She said that the policy was still active and if he deposits Rs 80,000 to HDFC account he will be given Rs 14 lakh as the policy will mature once the amount is paid, Biswal said. Three workers killed in ethylene gas cylinder blast in Jalgaon

Three workers were killed and another one was injured after an ethylene gas cylinder exploded in a banana-ripening centre in Jalgaon district in north Maharashtra today, police said. The incident took place this afternoon at Anturli in Muktainagar. The deceased were identified as Shivaji Salunkhe, Nivrutti Patil and Shekh Sharif Shekh Khalu, senior police inspector Ashok Kadlag said. "After being alerted about the incident, police rushed to the spot and immediately shifted the victims to a hospital, where three of them were declared brought dead," he said. One worker, who sustained serious injuries in the incident is undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, he added. "Bodies of all the deceased were handed over to their family members after the post-mortem," he said. The exact cause of the blast is yet to be ascertained, Kadlag said adding that forensic experts have been called for an analysis. An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered at Muktainagar police .
