5-year-old girl gangraped

A five-year-old girl, daughter of a migrant labourer, was brutally raped by unidentified men in Dasuya town in this district, police said today. The girl was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Dasuya from where she was referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh, in a critical condition after the incident yesterday night, they said. Police said the girl went missing from her house last night at about 10:30 pm when there was a power shutdown in the area. The family members lodged a missing report with the Dasuya police station late yesterday night. Today, a passerby noticed the girl lying in an unconscious state near a railway track. Some blood stained clothes were also found there. The father of the girl is a migrant labourer, police said. Dr Rajesh Bagga, Senior Medical Officer, Dasuya Civil Hospital, confirmed gang rape and said the victim suffered external as well as internal wounds. Law Min ready with draft to set up special fast track courts to try rape cases

The Law Ministry has come up with a proposal to set up "special" fast track courts across India to try rape cases as part of a larger scheme to strengthen infrastructure for better investigation and swift prosecution in such cases. Following discussions with the Home Secretary, the Department of Justice in the Law Ministry has prepared a draft scheme for setting up of "special fast track courts" to try rape cases. On June 14, the department had informed the Cabinet Secretary that the draft is ready and awaiting approval of the Law Minister. The new scheme is part of an ordinance recently promulgated to allow courts to award the death penalty to those convicted of raping children aged up to 12 years. The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Ordinance amended the IPC, the CrPC, the Evidence Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Woman batters father-in-law to death in Himachal

A woman killed her father-in-law by beating him repeatedly with his stick at their house in Banethi village of Nahan in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district over some domestic dispute, the police said today. An FIR under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the accused woman at Nahan police station and she was arrested, they said. The woman had murdered her aged father-in-law last night but the police came to know about the incident only this morning when the victim's son informed them, Sirmaur Superintendent of Police Rohit Malpani told PTI Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Sirmaur, Virendra Thakur said the woman, Pratima (30), had battered to death her father-in-law Kishan Chand (75), a retired public works department (PWD) employee, with his stick last night. RJD leader's mutilated body found

Police have recovered mutilated body of a local RJD leader from neighbouring Nalanda district late last evening, police said today. Nawada town police station SHO Anjani Kumar said that the deceased identified as Kailash Paswan was kidnapped on July 6 and later killed by some unidentified persons. The police found Paswan's body with severed head from under the bridge over Paimar river located under jurisdiction of Khudaganj police station of Nalanda district late last evening, the SHO said. Paswan, who was Nawada district RJD's general secretary, had left his house from Budhaul village located under town police station area with some work relating to Panchayat but never returned home, the SHO said. The killing of gangster Munna Bajrangi in an Uttar Pradesh jail was not an isolated case, with quite a few cases being reported in the state in the last years. Anurag Tripathi alias Annu, said to be close to a sharpshooter of the Munna Bajrangi gang, was shot at inside Varanasi jail by another murder accused Santosh Gupta on May 13, 2015. Yet another Kerala priest booked over rape allegation

A case of alleged rape has been filed against yet another priest of a church in Kerala, where a string of clergymen are facing accusations of sexual misconduct, police said today. Binu George, a priest of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, was alleged to have raped the parishioner in Alappuzha district four years ago. He is currently serving at a church under the diocese at Koypallikaranma. The victim woman has claimed the priest sexually assaulted her at the office of the church when she approached him for help to settle some family dispute in 2014. In her complaint to the police, the woman said she had informed the church authorities about the incident soon thereafter, and was promised she would not face any harassment from him in the future. HC confirms death sentence for techie for 7-yr-old girl's rape, murder

The Madras High Court today confirmed the death sentence awarded to a 23-year-old techie by a lower court for the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl here last year. A division bench of justices S Vimala and Ramathilagam upheld the February 19 order of the Mahila court in neighbouring Chengalpattu, awarding death penalty to S Dhasvanth, an engineering graduate. The bench was dismissing an appeal filed by Dhasvanth, who had challenged the trial court order convicting him in the rape-and-murder case of the seven-year old girl, who was his neighbour, in February last year. The crime had triggered a public outcry and Dhasvanth had faced the ire of a group of women, who assaulted him when he was brought to the lower court for trial. According to the prosecution, the convict had lured the girl into his flat at Mugalivakkam, using a dog, and strangled her to death after raping her. No lapse by UP police in providing security to Bajrangi: DGP

Encroachment on cooperative land: Court orders suspension of officer

Taking a serious view of encroachment on the land of the cooperative farming committee in Dehradun, the UttarakhandHigh Court has ordered the suspension of the Assistant Development Officer (Cooperative). A recall application filed against the same was also dismissed. Earlier in 2014, the court had directed the cooperative department to clear the encroachment upon 38 acres of cooperative farming land at Vikasnagar, Sindhiwali. Police question again Netanyahu on corruption allegations

Israeli police are once again questioning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as part of their investigations into a string of corruption allegations. Chinese woman arrested for gold smuggling at Delhi airport

A Chinese woman was arrested by customs officials at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth around Rs 61 lakh into the country. The passenger was intercepted after her arrival from Hong Kong on Friday, a statement issued today by the customs said. Her baggage search resulted in recovery of two gold bars weighing a total of two kilograms and having market value of Rs 61 lakh, it said, adding that the Chinese national was arrested.

Baby survives 9 hours buried in western Montana woods

A 5-month-old infant who miraculously survived more than nine hours being buried under a pile of sticks and debris in the woods of western Montana suffered only minor injuries despite wearing wet and soiled clothes in cold weather, authorities said yesterday. The baby boy is otherwise in good condition, authorities said. Missoula County Sheriff's deputies were called about 8 pm Saturday about a man threatening people in the Lolo Hot Springs area of the Lolo National Forest.
