Court allows 2-day custodial interrogation of Kejriwal kin arrested on graft charges

A city court today allowed the Delhi Police's Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) to interrogate Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's nephew, arrested in connection with an alleged scam in the Public Works Department (PWD) , for two days. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Khanagwal sent Vinay Bansal for custodial interrogation after the counsel for ACB said he was required to be taken to Sonepat and other areas around Delhi for investigation purposes. "Considering the circumstances and for a fair investigation, the accused be sent to two-day police custody. To be produced before the court on May 16," the judge said. Vinay, who is the son of Kejriwal's late brother-in-law Surender Bansal, was produced before the court today in a wheelchair after two production warrants were issued for his presence before the court on May 11 and May 12. Sunanda Pushkar death: Swamy accuses Congress of destroying evidence

Welcoming the charge sheet filed in the Sunanda Pushkar death case, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday commended the Delhi Police for doing their best with the available evidence.Swamy accused the then Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government and the former officials in the Delhi Police of destroying the evidence and witnesses"All witnesses and documents were destroyed by the UPA government and corrupt police officers. OHRC asks DGP to inquire into allegation of torture of girls

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) today asked the state director general of police and the commissioner of police of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack to inquire into the allegation of physical torture of two girls at a police station here. It directed that the reports be submitted within a week. The direction was issued by OHRC acting chairperson B K Mishra while hearing a petition of the victims and two other petitioners. Justice Mishra said the case will be put up for further orders on May 25. The commission was hearing the petitions of human rights activist Pradipta Nayak and advocate Prabir Kumar Das, who alleged that the two sisters who are residents of Nayapally area were taken to the police station by force. The sisters also allegedly subjected to assault and sustained injuries, the petitioners alleged. CBI files charge sheet in Nirav Modi case, names PNB ex-chief, senior officials

Billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi, Allahabad Bank MD and CEO Usha Ananthasubramanian were among 22 people charge-sheeted by the CBI today in connection with the country's largest financial scam worth over USD 2 billion in Punjab National Bank (PNB), agency sources said. The charge sheet, filed in a special court in Mumbai, detailed the alleged role of Ananthasubramanian, who was the MD and CEO of PNB from 2015 to 2017 and was questioned recently by the CBI in connection with the case, the sources said. The agency has also named PNB executive directors K V Brahmaji Rao and Sanjiv Sharan, and general manager (international operations) Nehal Ahad, and Nirav Modi's brother Nishal Modi in its charge sheet. The CBI said the fraudulent Letter of Undertakings (LoUs) issued to Nirav Modi were for Rs 6,498.20 crore, the sources said. The charge sheet, however, did not name Nirav Modi's wife Ami and his uncle and business partner Mehul Choksi, they said. The agency has detailed the roles of Nirav .

Bovine smuggling bid foiled in Kathua

A bovine smuggling bid was foiled in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir today and 10 animals were rescued, police said. Acting on a tip-off, a truck carrying the bovines was intercepted at a checkpoint at the Hatli Morh, a police officer said. The truck driver fled the spot, leaving behind the vehicle, he added. The truck was impounded and a case was registered, he said.

Prepare comprehensive plan for recharge of groundwater: NGT to DJB

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to prepare a comprehensive plan for groundwater recharge, besides asking authorities to take expeditious action against illegal borewells which had led to serious depletion of water levels in the city. A bench headed by acting NGT Chairperson Justice Jawad Rahim directed the DJB, which supplies water to the city, to file a detailed affidavit in this regard before May 23. The tribunal also pulled up the city government and the DJB over illegal borewells and directed the authorities to take speedy action against the violators. 17-year-old girl kills self after failing in Class X exams

A girl student allegedly committed suicide after she failed in her Class X exams results of which were announced today, police said. Bhavna Raikwar hanged herself in the kitchen of her house at Bhoipura locality here, said Taliya police station Inspector Karan Singh. The 17-year-old came to know that she had failed in three subjects. Devastated by the result, she went into the kitchen of her house and hanged herself to an overhead hook using her 'dupatta' (stole) as a noose, he said. The Madhya Pradesh High School Board today announced the results of Class X exams. The body has been sent for a post-mortem, Singh said. Six persons arrested from Navi Mumbai for betting on IPL game

Six people were arrested from neighbouring Navi Mumbai for allegedly placing bets on an IPL game, police said today. Officials said that the six were nabbed after a police team, acting on a tip-off, raided a hotel in Navi Mumbai on Saturday while an IPL game between Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore was underway. "The persons arrested were accepting and placing bets online. We have arrested the six under sections of the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act, the Indian Telegraph Act and the Indian Penal Code," Tushar Doshi, deputy commissioner of police, Navi Mumbai Crime Branch, said. He identified those arrested as Rakesh Kondre, Abhijit Kolekar, Krishna Sagat, all from Pune, Ganesh Mane and Kishore Rihal from Navi Mumbai and Dharmesh Gala from Mumbai. They were presented before a magistrate who remanded them in police custody till May 17, he said. PNB scam: PNB, Allahabad bank asked to divest accused's powers

Safdar Nagori, 17 SIMI cadres convicted in Kerala arms training case

A court here today convicted 18 people, including founder member of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) Safdar Nagori, for being members of a terrorist organisation in a case of organising arms training camp in Kerala in 2007. Special NIA court judge Kauser Edappagath convicted the 18 people under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, the Explosives Substances Act and Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and acquitted 17 others in the case. The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment tomorrow. The case was registered by Kerala Police against SIMI members for holding an arms training camp in December 2007 at Thangalpara in Wagamon. HC declines to extend interim bail granted to Suhaib Ilyasi

The Delhi High Court today declined to further extend the four-week interim bail granted to former TV anchor and producer Suhaib Ilyasi, serving life term for killing his wife 18 years ago, to take care of his ailing second spouse. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta declined to grant the relief, which was orally sought by Ilyasi's lawyers after the court adjourned the hearing of his appeal against his conviction and sentence, to July 4. "No. There will be no further extension. This is why we wanted to commence arguments today," it said. Ilyasi was granted bail on April 26. Ilyasi's wife Anju was rushed to a hospital on January 11, 2000 with stab wounds she received at her East Delhi residence. She was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Police files charge sheet in Sunanda death case; names Tharoor

The Delhi Police today accused Congress leader Shashi Tharoor of abetting the suicide of his wife Sunanda Pushkar and told a city court that his custodial interrogation was necessary as investigation was yet to be concluded. The police filed a nearly 3,000-page charge sheet in the court, naming Tharoor as the only person as accused in the case and claiming that there was enough evidence to proceed against him. The police has also alleged that Tharoor had subjected his wife to cruelty.
