DMK MLA, party colleague appear in court in gutkha raid case
A court here today directed DMK MLA N Karthik to sign at a local police station daily until further orders in connection with a case related to alleged obstruction caused during a raid on an illegal gutkha unit. Sulur Magistrate C Vediyappan gave the direction to Karthik and also his party colleague Thangaraj when the two appeared before him following grant of anticipatory bail by the additional district sessions court. He ordered them to sign at the police station once in the morning daily until further orders. Cases were registered against 10 people, including Karthik, Thangaraj and former Kannampalayam Panchayat president Dalapathi Murugesan, on the charge of obstructing the police from carrying out their duty during the raids on the gutkha unit in Kannampalayam near here on April 27. Kejriwal kin's sent to two-day police custody
A Delhi court today sent Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's kin, arrested in connection with Public Works Department scam, to two-day police custody. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Khanagwal allowed the police to interrogate Kejriwal's nephew Vinay Bansal in its custody. Vinay, who is the son of Kejriwal's late brother-in-law Surender Bansal, was arrested on May 10 by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB). The court had then rejected the application of the ACB for a three-day police remand of Bansal, saying he was not medically fit. Three FIRs, including one against a company run by Surender Bansal, were registered by the ACB in this case on May 9 last year. Three companies, including Renu Constructions (owned by the Bansals, Kamal Singh and Pawan Kumar), were named in the FIRs. 12-yr-old gang-raped in Vrindavan hotel: Police
A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three men in a hotel in Vrindavan and subsequently abandoned in a Delhi-bound train, police said today. She was rescued by the Delhi police. The incident occurred on May 11, the police said, adding that the hotel fell under the jurisdiction of the Kotwali police station. "An FIR under section 376 (rape) of the IPC and sections 3 and 5 of the POCSO Act has been filed against the accused," Deputy Superintendent of Police Rakesh Kumar said. Two of the accused were identified as Sanjay of Sakraya village and Laxman, while efforts were on to ascertain the identity of the third accused, the police said. No arrest was made so far, Kumar said, adding that the girl was sent for a medical examination today. Charge sheet filed in Sunanda Pushkar death case
The Delhi Police on Monday filed a charge sheet in a Delhi court in connection with the death of Sunanda Pushkar.The charge sheet has named Sunanda's husband and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor as accused, under sections 306 (Abetment of suicide) and 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).The next date of hearing in the case is May 24.Sunanda was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a suite of a five-star hotel in Delhi on the night of January 17, 2014.On February 23, Tharoor said he was looking for a conclusion in his wife's death case.Incidentally, on that day, Tharoor's statement came hours after the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Delhi Police on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy's appeal challenging the Delhi High Court order dismissing his plea for a Special Investigation Team (SIT)-led probe into the case.
Chargesheet preposterous, intend to contest it: Tharoor
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor today termed the Delhi Police charge sheet accusing him of abetting the suicide of his wife Sunanda Pushkar "preposterous" and said he intends to contest it "vigorously". Tharoor is the only person who has been named as an accused in the case. The police in its charge sheet, which runs into around 3,000 pages, has also alleged that Tharoor had subjected his wife to cruelty. "I have taken note of the filing of this preposterous charge sheet &intend to contest it vigorously. Charge sheet based on medico-legal, forensic evidence: Delhi Police on Pushkar
Delhi Police today said that the charge sheet filed in the Sunanda Pushkar case that accuses her husband and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor of abetting her suicide was finalised on the basis of "medico-legal and forensic evidence". Tharoor is the only person who has been arrayed as an accused in the case. The police, in its charge sheet which runs into around 3,000 pages, has also alleged that Tharoor had subjected his wife to cruelty. "On the basis of medico-legal and forensic evidence analysed during investigation as well as opinion of psychological autopsy experts, the charge sheet was filed. The matter is sub judice," said a Delhi Police spokesperson. Psychological autopsy is a reconstructive mental state evaluation to understand an individual's mental state at and around the time of death for the purpose of identifying the cause of death. Malaysia's attorney general to go on leave pending probe
New Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says the attorney general has been told to go on leave pending an investigation of his role in allegedly covering up a massive corruption scandal involving ousted leader Najib Razak. The 1MDB state fund set up by Najib is being investigated in the United States and other countries. Anger over the scandal helped Mahathir's alliance score a stunning election victory last week, ending the 60-year rule of Najib's coalition. US investigators say Najib's associates stole and laundered $4.5 billion from the fund, some of which landed in Najib's bank account. Attorney General Mohamed Apandi Ali cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in 2016. Mahathir, who earlier slammed Apandi's credibility, said Monday that the country's solicitor-general will take over Apandi's job while he goes on leave.
Ludhiana gas cylinder blast: Death toll climbs to 14
With the death of a teenage boy, the death toll in last month's gas cylinder blast in the Giaspur locality here rose to 14, police said today. 14-year-old Shivam succumbed to the burn injuries in the local CMC hospital here late last night, they said. Shivam's father Amarnath, a labourer, who was also severely burnt in the cylinder blast incident on April 26, had breathed his last in the hospital on May 1. The cooking gas cylinder had exploded at the residence of Ashok Kumar Yadav (58) in Samrat Colony of Giaspura, injuring 35 people. Yadav, his wife Sunita (40) and son Raj (13) succumbed to injuries at the CMC hospital later. Residents of houses neighbouring Yadav's were among the dead.
Man burns files in village office over 'improper' land survey
A 70-year-old man today caused a flutter when he allegedly set ablaze some files in a village office in the district, as he was upset over the manner in which the survey of his land was done by revenue officials, police said. Ravi was arrested soon after he committed the alleged crime at Amballoor village office, they said. According to police, he reached the office at around 9.40 AM andpoured petrol on the files placed on a desk and set them afire even as employees present there raised an alarm. However, no one was injured in the incident, police said adding Ravi, who fled the scene, was later arrested. The employees immediately swung into action and doused the fire, averting any major damage. Police said Ravi, staying near the village office, was allegedly fed up with the manner in which re-survey of his land was carried out by the revenue officials. Two undertrials missing from Ludhiana Central jail: official
Two undertrials, both brothers, have gone missing from Ludhiana Central Jail since last evening, police said. They have been identified as Jasbir Singh and Harvinder Singh of Amloh in Fatehgarh Sahib district, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, Surinder Lamba said today. The two were facing trial in separate criminal cases of theft and under the NDPS Act. The officer said that during a routine head-count in the jail at 8 pm on Sunday evening, the officials found the two prisoners missing. The jail authorities immediately informed the police. Investigations are in progress, Lamba said.
Hyderabad: AIMIM MLA, party workers thrash child rape attempt accused
All India Majlis-e-Ittehad Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA from Malakpet, Ahmed Balala along with party workers attacked a man at Hyderabad's Chaderghat Police Station, who is accused of attempting to rape a six-year-old girl.The accused has been identified as Syed Ismail, 35, who is also the victim's neighbour.Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Sultan Bazar Division told ANI, "Ismail went to his neighbour's house on May 12, lured the girl to his house and tried to assault her. She raised an alarm and escaped from his place and informed her family. SIMI training camp case: NIA court convicts 18, acquits 17
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Kochi on Monday convicted 18 of the 35 people accused of organising a secret camp of the banned Islamic Students Federation of India (SIMI) in Kerala's Wagamon.The rest of the accused facing trial were acquitted.Meanwhile, the court will also pronounce the quantum of punishment tomorrow.Out of the total 38 accused, 35 have faced trial in the case.Mehaboob Malik, one of the accused, was shot dead while trying to escape from a jail in Bhopal while one is absconding and another is in police custody.A case was registered on the basis of a complaint that a secret training camp was organised allegedly by the SIMI at Thangalpara, Wagamon in the state during December 2007.The agency later alleged that the SIMI cadres were involved in physical and arms training, firing practices, motor bike racing and rope climbing practices in the camp.
Man gets 3 yrs imprisonment for selling fake govt stamps
A court here today sentenced a government stamp vendor to three years imprisonment for keeping and selling counterfeit stamps. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ankur Sharma also imposed a fine of Rs 6,000 on Asharam Gupta. Gupta, a government stamp vendor, was arrested on charges of keeping and selling counterfeit stamps. Fake stamps were seized from his possession and a case was lodged against him by an official under IPC sections pertaining to possession of counterfeit government stamps in February 1988.

Ambedkar, Sant Ravidas statues found damaged in Ballia distt
Two statues, one of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar and another of Sant Ravidas, were found damaged in a village under Gadwar police station area in this district following which a case was registered, police said today. The villagers of Majhova informed about the vandalism following which an FIR has been lodged against unknown persons, Gadwar police station in-charge Ram Singh said. He said repair work of the statues was on. SP Sriparna Ganguly said the village pradhan and chowkidar had been given the responsibility of protecting the statues. Threat claim by man against Hindu Ekta Manch leader false: Police
The Jammu and Kashmir Police today dismissed as untrue the claim by a man, who had provided his land for the burial of a minor girl brutally raped and killed in Kathua, that he was threatened by a Hindu Ekta Manch leader. Mohammad Rafiq, from the nomadic Gujjar community, had filed a police complaint alleging that he was threatened and abused by the Manch leader. A sessions court today granted time till July 4 to the CBI to file a supplementary charge sheet in the murder case of a seven-year-old boy at a private school here. Additional Sessions Judge Jasbir Singh Kundu granted time to the CBI after taking note of a fresh plea by the agency stating that the probe was underway and it needed one-and-a-half months to complete it. The court also reserved its order on a plea of the 16-year-old accused in the case challenging the Juvenile Justice Board's (JJB) decision declaring him as an adult. Kathua case: SC to hear witnesses case seeking protection from police torture
