The CBI on Monday filed a chargesheet against some former and current bank officials and several others in the over Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case allegedly perpetrated by diamantaire Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi.
Student held for 'sexual assault' of minor girl in Telangana
A 19-year-old student was today arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl at his house in Meerpet area here, police said. On May 11, the accused, who is the 8-year-old victim's neighbour, had asked her to bring cold water from her house. When she went to his house, the accused allegedly sexually assaulted the girl, they said. As the girl did not return, her aunt went to the house of the accused, where the minor narrated the incident, a police official said. Following a complaint, acase under relevant IPC sections and others besides under provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered. The boy was today arrested from here, police added.
SC seeks states' response to Centre's scheme on Cauvery
The Supreme Court on Monday sought Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry's response to the scheme formulated by the Central government for the implementation of 2007 Cauvery Water Tribunal award which was marginally modified and reaffirmed by the top court in February 2018.
Gunmen shot dead 2 persons in Pakistan
Unidentified gunmen today shot dead two persons, including a security personnel, in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said. A search operation has been launched to nab the culprits, the police said, adding that the reason behind the double murder has not been ascertained yet. The incident occurred in Dera Ismail Khan District bordering South Waziristan Agency.
Three held in connection with CPI(M) worker's killing
Three people were today arrested in connection with a murder of a local CPI(M) leader at nearby Palloor here on May 7, police said. While the arrests have been confirmed, Mahe police sources have not given the details of those arrested. Babu, a CPI(M) worker and former councillor of Mahe, was hacked to death on May 7 night at Palloor with the party alleging that BJP was behind the attack. Shortly after the incident, in an apparent retaliatory attack, a BJP worker, Shemij, was pulled out from his auto-rickshaw and killed. Mahe, an enclave of Puducherry, is situated between Thalassery in the politically volatile Kannur district and Vatakara in Kozhikode district. Both CPI(M) and BJP had observed hartal protesting against the two murders. Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, had visited Babu's house on Saturday night and spent some time with the bereaved family.
Man gets 3-yr RI for molesting physically disabled minor
A Thane court has awarded three years rigorous imprisonment to a 50-year-old man here for molesting a six-year-old physically disabled girl in 2016. Special judge R N Bawankar also imposed a fine of Rs 4,000 on the accused Mohammad Nasir Abdul Rashid Shaikh while pronouncing the punishment last week. According to the prosecution, the victim, residing in the Mumbra township here, went out of her home on October 21, 2016, to eat at a roadside food stall when the accused, who lived in her neighbourhood, forcibly took her away in an autorickshaw and allegedly raped her. Later, the girl returned home but could not walk properly. She told her elder sister and mother about the incident. The girl's parents then lodged a police complaint following which the accused was arrested and booked under IPC section 376 (rape) and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. NIA court convicts 18 in SIMI training camp case, 17 acquitted
A Special NIA court here today convicted 18 people in the December 2007 Wagamon SIMI arms training camp case. The court also acquitted 17 others. Special Judge Kauser Edappagath found the convicts guilty under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Explosives Substances Act and various sections of Indian Penal Code. The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment tomorrow. While only two accused were produced today in the court, the others who are lodged in various jails in Ahmedabad, Bhopal and Bengaluru, attended the proceedings via multi-point video conference. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) which probed the case had charged the accused with involvement in terror activities and being in cahoots with terror groups besides criminal conspiracy and violation of Arms Act among others. Two minor girls raped in UP in 24 hours
In a span of 24 hours, two minor girls were allegedly raped in separate areas of Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh.In Madnapur village, a ten-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an unidentified person while she was on her way home.As per the victim's relative, she was returning home from her neighbour's place, when the accused, a resident of the same locality, forcefully took her to his house and raped her. Man arrested for raping two minors
A 58-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping two minor girls in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district.The accused, identified as C Subba Naidu, was arrested yesterday, police said.The victims were 5 and 7 years old.An FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered.According to the complaint, the accused, a resident of Charlapalli village, committed the crime on May 11, when he took the girls to the Panchayat office building and raped them there.The parents, after coming to know about the crime, lodged the complaint on May 12, following which he was arrested yesterday.
Rape video goes viral in Bihar; police launch probe
The police are probing a video that purportedly showed a woman being raped by a youth in the presence of other persons, apparently in the Magadh region of Bihar, a senior police official said today. The video footage had surfaced last week when it was shared on social media. In the clip, the dialect being spoken was Magahi which gives an impression that the heinous crime was committed somewhere in the Magadh region," Senior Superintendent of Police, Gaya, Rajiv Mishra told PTI over the phone. He said, It is not yet clear as to when and where the crime had taken place nor who are the victim and the perpetrators. The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police today arrested a man from Bihar on the charge of being involved in an arms smuggling racket that was busted here last week, the police said. Rajesh Kumar (35) alias Munna, was arrested from his residence in in Bihar's Nalanda district a senior officer of the Kolkata Police's STF unit said. Six people, including two Rifle Factory Ishapore (RFI) officials, were arrested by the Kolkata Police last week from the city's Babughat area for their alleged involvement in smuggling arms to Maoists. Rajesh's name cropped up while interrogating the six accused, the officer said, adding, "He has been given transit remand by Bihar Sharif Court. He will be brought to Kolkata tomorrow." Preliminary investigation revealed that the arms were smuggled out of Ichapur Rifle Factory with the help of its two officers. 62-yr-old man shot at during robbery bid
A 62-year-old man was shot at allegedly by unidentified men after he tried to resist a robbery bid in Shahdara this evening, a police official said today. The victim, identified as Rakesh Kumar Jain, was returning home on his two-wheeler when the two accused, who were following him, stopped him and asked him to give the keys of the cash box of his daily earnings, the official said. Jain was involved in the business of exchange of old notes. He refused to give them the keys and they fired at him, the police official said. The bullet hit him in the chest. The victim was rushed to the GTB Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, they said. The accused fled from the spot without taking the box, they added. The victim had been attacked and robbed earlier also and the police are probing whether those men who were arrested earlier were involved in this incident.
5 arrested for kidnapping, raping minor
Five people were arrested for allegedly abducting and raping a minor girl here, police said today. The accused had kidnapped the girl from Masuriya locality on Saturday night and had taken her to an empty house in Chopasni Housing Board in Sector 21, where the three of them raped her during the night, ACP Swati Sharma said. The next day, they dropped the girl near her house, Sharma said. The victim narrated the entire incident to her grandmother. The accused were identified as Waseem, Pawan, Bablu alias Heeralal, Sachin and Sunil, all residents of Masuriya locality, she said. A case under relevant sections of the IPC and the POCSO ACT was registered against all the five persons, the ACP added.

the sarpanch of a village in Rajanna Sircilla district was hacked to death by some persons here today, police said. Goli Shankara Narayana (45), the sarpanch of Moodapalli village, was found dead with multiple stab wounds, they said. Narayana, who was earlier with the congress party, had recently joined the BJP, they said. the reason for the murder was not yet known and efforts are on to nab the culprits, they said.
PG girl student alleges use of abusive words by Dept head
A PG girl student at Bharathiyar University has lodged a complaint with the Tamil Nadu Governor against her department head and hostel officials,alleging they used foul language when she questioned their refusal to provide an ambulance for her sick room mate. The girl, hailing from Malappuram in Kerala, also sent a complaint to the DGP, state human rights commission and Kerala Chief Minister over the incident, which occurred about six months back, police said. The Governor is the chancellor of state run universities. The post graduate girl student alleged that the pyschology department head Velayutham used abusive language and asked her to leave the university when she questioned the woman hostel warden's decision on November 14 last year not to provide ambulance to take her sick room mate to a hospital. Protest at Mines department: Goa Foundation's Alvares booked
Goa Foundation director Claud Alvares was among two activists booked today by police on charge of damaging public property, a day after they locked state Mines and Geology department for being the "biggest source of illegalities in the mining sector" in a symbolic protest. It is noted that Goa Foundation's petition had led the Supreme Court to quash renewal of 88 mining leases in the coastal state in February this year, which brought the mining industry to a halt since mid-March. Another activists booked along with Alvares is identified as Rahul Basu. A complaint was lodged against Alvares and Basu by an official of the State Mines and Geology department. A Dalit man was killed for allegedly teasing a woman, following which her husband, the accused, was arrested today in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district, police said. Pradip Rathod (21) was killed on March 29 in Timbi village in Umrala taluka of Bhavangar and his family, at the time, had complained to the police that he was murdered as some upper caste men were infuriated with the fact that he rode a horse. Superintendent of Police P L Mal today said that a farm labourer, identified as Munna Koli, was arrested from his native Padna village in Ahmedabad district. Koli has told police that Pradip used to tease his wife, the official said. "Koli worked as a labourer in a nearby farm and has said that Pradip, while moving about the area on horseback, would tease his wife while he was away at work," Mal said. A Delhi court today sought the response of the Tihar jail authorities on a plea of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's relative Vinay Bansal, arrested in connection with an alleged scam in the Public Works Department, claiming he was neither being allowed home food nor meet his family. Metropolitan Magistrate Rashmi Gupta directed the jail authorities to file a reply tomorrow on the application moved by Bansal, a nephew of Kejriwal, alleging he was not being allowed to change clothes in the hospital, where he admitted on May 10, and claimed he was seriously ill. Issue directions to ensure Kashmiris not harassed: JK CM to Centre
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today asked the Centre to issue directions to the "concerned agencies" to ensure that its residents do not face any harassment. The chief minister spoke to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and brought to his notice cases of alleged harassment of people from the state in Delhi and Himachal Pradesh, an official spokesperson said. The chief minister requested Singh to issue necessary instructions to the concerned agencies so that people from the state, who are studying, doing business or working in other parts of the country, do not feel inconvenienced and can carry on their activities without interference, the official spokesperson said.
