A 19-year-old student was today arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl at his house in Meerpet area here, police said. On May 11, the accused, who is the 8-year-old victim's neighbour, had asked her to bring cold water from her house. When she went to his house, the accused allegedly sexually assaulted the girl, they said. As the girl did not return, her aunt went to the house of the accused, where the minor narrated the incident, a police official said. Following a complaint, acase under relevant IPC sections and others besides under provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered. The boy was today arrested from here, police added.

Unidentified gunmen today shot dead two persons, including a security personnel, in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said. A search operation has been launched to nab the culprits, the police said, adding that the reason behind the double murder has not been ascertained yet. The incident occurred in Dera Ismail Khan District bordering South Waziristan Agency.
Three people were today arrested in connection with a murder of a local CPI(M) leader at nearby Palloor here on May 7, police said. While the arrests have been confirmed, Mahe police sources have not given the details of those arrested. Babu, a CPI(M) worker and former councillor of Mahe, was hacked to death on May 7 night at Palloor with the party alleging that BJP was behind the attack. Shortly after the incident, in an apparent retaliatory attack, a BJP worker, Shemij, was pulled out from his auto-rickshaw and killed. Mahe, an enclave of Puducherry, is situated between Thalassery in the politically volatile Kannur district and Vatakara in Kozhikode district. Both CPI(M) and BJP had observed hartal protesting against the two murders. A Thane court has awarded three years rigorous imprisonment to a 50-year-old man here for molesting a six-year-old physically disabled girl in 2016. Special judge R N Bawankar also imposed a fine of Rs 4,000 on the accused Mohammad Nasir Abdul Rashid Shaikh while pronouncing the punishment last week. According to the prosecution, the victim, residing in the Mumbra township here, went out of her home on October 21, 2016, to eat at a roadside food stall when the accused, who lived in her neighbourhood, forcibly took her away in an autorickshaw and allegedly raped her. Later, the girl returned home but could not walk properly. She told her elder sister and mother about the incident. The girl's parents then lodged a police complaint following which the accused was arrested and booked under IPC section 376 (rape) and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A Special NIA court here today convicted 18 people in the December 2007 Wagamon SIMI arms training camp case. The court also acquitted 17 others. Special Judge Kauser Edappagath found the convicts guilty under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Explosives Substances Act and various sections of Indian Penal Code. The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment tomorrow. While only two accused were produced today in the court, the others who are lodged in various jails in Ahmedabad, Bhopal and Bengaluru, attended the proceedings via multi-point video conference. In a span of 24 hours, two minor girls were allegedly raped in separate areas of Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh.In Madnapur village, a ten-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an unidentified person while she was on her way home.As per the victim's relative, she was returning home from her neighbour's place, when the accused, a resident of the same locality, forcefully took her to his house and raped her. The police are probing a video that purportedly showed a woman being raped by a youth in the presence of other persons, apparently in the Magadh region of Bihar, a senior police official said today. The video footage had surfaced last week when it was shared on social media. The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police today arrested a man from Bihar on the charge of being involved in an arms smuggling racket that was busted here last week, the police said. Rajesh Kumar (35) alias Munna, was arrested from his residence in in Bihar's Nalanda district a senior officer of the Kolkata Police's STF unit said. Six people, including two Rifle Factory Ishapore (RFI) officials, were arrested by the Kolkata Police last week from the city's Babughat area for their alleged involvement in smuggling arms to Maoists. Rajesh's name cropped up while interrogating the six accused, the officer said, adding, "He has been given transit remand by Bihar Sharif Court. He will be brought to Kolkata tomorrow." A 62-year-old man was shot at allegedly by unidentified men after he tried to resist a robbery bid in Shahdara this evening, a police official said today. The victim, identified as Rakesh Kumar Jain, was returning home on his two-wheeler when the two accused, who were following him, stopped him and asked him to give the keys of the cash box of his daily earnings, the official said. Jain was involved in the business of exchange of old notes. He refused to give them the keys and they fired at him, the police official said. The bullet hit him in the chest. The victim was rushed to the GTB Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, they said. The accused fled from the spot without taking the box, they added. The victim had been attacked and robbed earlier also and the police are probing whether those men who were arrested earlier were involved in this incident.
Five people were arrested for allegedly abducting and raping a minor girl here, police said today. The accused had kidnapped the girl from Masuriya locality on Saturday night and had taken her to an empty house in Chopasni Housing Board in Sector 21, where the three of them raped her during the night, ACP Swati Sharma said. The next day, they dropped the girl near her house, Sharma said. The victim narrated the entire incident to her grandmother. The accused were identified as Waseem, Pawan, Bablu alias Heeralal, Sachin and Sunil, all residents of Masuriya locality, she said. A PG girl student at Bharathiyar University has lodged a complaint with the Tamil Nadu Governor against her department head and hostel officials,alleging they used foul language when she questioned their refusal to provide an ambulance for her sick room mate. Goa Foundation director Claud Alvares was among two activists booked today by police on charge of damaging public property, a day after they locked state Mines and Geology department for being the "biggest source of illegalities in the mining sector" in a symbolic protest. It is noted that Goa Foundation's petition had led the Supreme Court to quash renewal of 88 mining leases in the coastal state in February this year, which brought the mining industry to a halt since mid-March. A Dalit man was killed for allegedly teasing a woman, following which her husband, the accused, was arrested today in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district, police said. A Delhi court today sought the response of the Tihar jail authorities on a plea of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's relative Vinay Bansal, arrested in connection with an alleged scam in the Public Works Department, claiming he was neither being allowed home food nor meet his family. Metropolitan Magistrate Rashmi Gupta directed the jail authorities to file a reply tomorrow on the application moved by Bansal, a nephew of Kejriwal, alleging he was not being allowed to change clothes in the hospital, where he admitted on May 10, and claimed he was seriously ill.
