Kathua: Man claims Hindu Ekta Manch leader threatening him

A man, who had provided his land for the burial of a minor girl brutally raped and killed in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir earlier this year, has claimed that a leader of a right-wing organisation was threatening him. Mohammad Rafiq, from the nomadic Gujjar community, has filed a police complaint alleging that the Hindu Ekta Manch leader threatened and abused him to drive him out of the area. "We have received a complaint from Mohmamad Rafiq claiming that he was threatened by Sarpanch Kant Kumar," a police official said. Rafiq has alleged that Kumar, a Manch leader, was threatening him to drive him out of the area. The police official said they have found discrepancies in Rafiq's complaint and were conducting a preliminary investigation into the matter before reaching any conclusion. 3 arrested for betting in Odisha

Three persons have been arrested in the steel city for their alleged involvement in betting during the ongoing Indian Premier League cricket matches, the police said today. Thirty-three mobile phones, televison sets, a laptop and calculators were also seized by the police team during a raid at Nalla Road area here yesterday night, the police said. "We have arrested three persons involved in the betting racket and seized cash amounting to Rs 9,04,000, 33 mobile phones and other materials used for the purpose," said Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Panposh, Padmini Sahoo. The arrested persons were identified as Masood Alam (32), Parwez Alam (37) and Uttam Kumar Sharma (52), the SDPO said. Some members of the racket escaped from the place and efforts were on to nab them, the police said. 2 arrested in J&K for 'peddling' narcotics

Two alleged drug peddlers were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir after narcotics were recovered from their possession, the police said today. A police team arrested Surinder Kumar, a resident of Punjab's Pathankot district, after he was allegedly found carrying 6.2-kg poppy straw in his vehicle, a police spokesperson said. Another person was arrested at a checkpoint in north Kashmir's Bandipora district and 480 grams of charas were seized. The alleged peddler has been identified as Rafiq Wani, a resident of Bandipora, the spokesperson added.

Man kills infant boy on suspicion of wife's character

A 27-year-old tribal was arrested for allegedly axing two-month-old infant boy to death on suspicion of his wife's character in Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh, police said today. The accused, Nansingh Marabi (27), suspected that his wife bore the child from another man through an illicit relationship, according to police. When his wife had gone to fetch water outside their house in Dhangaon Rayat village, located around 75 kms away from the district headquarters, Marabi alleged killed the baby with an axe and buried him inside the house, said Shahpura police station inspector Anil Patel. "When his wife returned home, she couldn't spot the baby in the swing and confronted Marabi, following which an altercation ensued between them," Patel said. Mother of molested child arrested, case charged under POCSO

The mother of the 10-year-old girl,who was allegedly sexually molested by a businessman in a cinema theatre, was today arrested after detailed questioning. A case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered against the woman, a senior police officer investigating the case said. Police had last night arrested the 60-year-old businessman, MoideenKutty, after a Malayalam television channel aired CCTV visuals of the accused sexually abusing the child inside the theatre at nearby Edapal on April 18. The girl's mother was sitting beside the man when the molestation took place. Though the theatre authorities handed over the visuals through childline to police on April 28, no action was taken until yesterday. Cambodia makes 1st arrest on charges of insulting monarchy

A Cambodian school director has become the first person to be arrested on charges of insulting the monarchy after posting comments on Facebook critical of the authoritarian government. The law protecting the monarchy was passed in February. Critics say it further erodes freedom of speech and political activities, already under stress from Prime Minister Hun Sen's government. 2 minor girls raped in Odisha

Two minor girls were allegedly raped in separate incidents in Balasore and Kendrapara districts of Odisha, police said. The accused in both the cases were arrested, the police said. A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man at Purusotampur village under the jurisdiction of Soro Police Station on May 11, Inspector In-Charge of Soro police station, Dilip Sahu, said. The girl, a student of class 2, was sexually assaulted inside a lift irrigation point centre in an agriculture field, he said. DNA data banks to be set up at national, state level to store DNA profiles

DNA data banks will be set up at the national and state level to store profiles, and those who leak the information stored in such facilities will be punished with a jail term of up to three years, according to a draft bill on DNA technology being finalised by the Law Ministry. The draft bill also states that all DNA data including DNA profiles, DNA samples and records, will only be used for identification of the person and not for "any other purpose". The draft bill, based on the one prepared by the Law Commission recently, states that national and regional DNA data banks will be set up for maintaining a national database for identification of victims, accused, suspects, undertrials, missing persons and unidentified human remains. The Department of Biotechnology was consulted by the law panel to draft the bill. The Law Ministry is now finalising the official draft before it goes to the Union Cabinet for final approval. The Kerala High Court has observed that merely watching certain videos and speeches will not be a reason to implicate a person as a terrorist. A division bench of justices A M Shaffique and P Somarajan made the observation while considering an appeal filed by one Muhammed Riyas, challenging an NIA court order denying bail to him. In its recent verdict, the court also set aside the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court order and granted bail to him. In his appeal, Riyas had submitted that he was arrested on terror charges following a complaint filed by his estranged wife, a Hindu woman who had converted to Islam. He had contended that he was not part of any terrorist organisation as claimed by his wife and he had no connection with the same. Personal enmity most common cause of bloodhsed in Delhi: Police

Brawls over trivial issues -- such as not sharing a cigarette -- led to a spate of killings in the national capital in the first four months of the year, but the most common reason for fatal crimes was personal enmity and old disputes, according to newly released Delhi Police data. Till April 30 this year, 27 of the 167 reported killings took place because of a sudden provocation or a trivial issue, the second most common reason for bloodshed. Personal enmity was cited in the data as the most common motive in murder cases. During the last two years, too, animosity occupied the top spot, followed by violence over sudden provocations or trivial issues. In 2017, more than 45 per cent murder cases were due to personal enmity, the Delhi Police data showed. As many as 65 people were killed till April 30 this year because of long-standing disputes or enmity, the Delhi Police said. Kasauli demolition firing claims another life

A person, who was injured in the firing in Kasauli during demolition drive on May 1, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.Shail Bala Sharma (51), an assistant town planner of Solan district, along with four teams of the Town and Country Planning Department, were razing unauthorised construction in the area on the order of the Supreme Court when the incident took place.When Sharma and her team reached Narayani Guest House, its owner Vijay Singh asked them to keep off his property. After the team went ahead with the demolition and tried to get the place evacuated, Singh opened fire on them.Assistant Town and Country Planning officer Shail Bala Sharma was killed in the firing.Later, the main accused, Vijay Singh, was sent to the police custody for five days.
