The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district today handed over a financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to the next of kin of a man killed in small arms firing by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Gulpur sector yesterday. Mohammad Ikhlaq (22), a resident of Kalsan Malti Baghal Dhara village, was killed outside his house when he was hit by a bullet during ceasefire violation by Pakistan, raising the death toll in cross-border firing this year to 32, including 16 security personnel, in over 700 such incidents. Deputy Commissioner, Poonch, Mohammad Aijaz Asad, along with a team of officers, visited the bereaved family and expressed grief over his death, an official spokesperson said. He said he also handed over Rs 1 lakh as financial assistance to the family and assured them that more financial assistance under norms would be provided shortly.

A Delhi court today issued a second production warrant against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's relative Vinay Bansal, arrested in connection with an alleged scam in the Public Works Department (PWD), after Tihar jail authorities failed to produce him before it. The first production warrant for Bansal, a nephew of Kejriwal, was issued yesterday by Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Khanagwal, who had also sought an explanation from the Tihar jail superintendent for failing to produce him. Today, Duty Metropolitan Magistrate Shilpa Jain sought Bansal's presence in the court tomorrow. The Indore district court today awarded death penalty to a 26-year-old man for rape and murder of a three-month-old girl, while likening him to "gangrene". The verdict came within 22 days of the incident. Additional Sessions Judge Varsha Sharma sentenced Naveen Gadke, the accused, to death under IPC section 376 (A) (death due to injuries during rape) which was introduced under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, and section 302 (murder). He was also found guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A 60-year-old farmer, who had allegedly attempted suicide in the early hours of May 6 in Umarkhed taluka here, today died after battling for life at Nanded's Government Medical College, police said. Officials said that the body of Shyamrao Rama Bhopale, a resident of Marlegaon in Umarkhed taluka, had been sent for post mortem. Bhopale had set himself ablaze in front of his house after dousing kerosene on his body, with family members claiming that he took the extreme step as he had an outstanding loan and his crops had failed. His son had, immediately after the incident, told mediapersons that Bhopale, having about 1.5 acres of land, had an outstanding loan of Rs 17,360 and his tur and soyabean crops had failed. Moreover, the son had said, Bhopale was not eligible for the state government's farm loan waiver scheme. A 'share-auto' driver and his accomplice were arrested today for allegedly misbehaving with a woman passenger recently, police said. The driver Janarthanan and his friend Pavin were arrested for allegedly misbehaving with the woman, a college student, they said. She was staying at a relative's place for her education. The woman had travelled in the share-auto on May 7 while returning from college and the duo tried to misbehave with her in an isolated place by using vulgar language and pulling her dupatta, police said. She, however, managed to escape from them and narrated her ordeal to her relatives, following which they preferred a police complaint. Following a probe into the matter, including enquiries with other share-auto drivers, the duo were arrested early this morning, police said. Unlike regular autorickshaws, share autos carry several passengers and charge lesser rates.
Delhi Police have registered a case in connection with the alleged beating of a man and his family inside a police station when they refused to pay a fine to get their two-wheeler released after it was towed away from outside their home, a police official said today. The Station House Officer of Rani Bagh police station was taken off duty and sent to the district police lines, while six other police personnel who had allegedly beaten up the man were suspended. The police yesterday lodged a case in the matter against the police personnel. Six policemen allegedly beat up Surendra Aggarwal (43) and his two sons - residents of Saraswati Vihar in northwest Delhi. Aggarwal claimed that a scooter was parked outside his residence when the police officials took it away on May 6. He told senior officers that their security guard had informed the police that the vehicle was not parked illegally but the police personnel refused to listen to him. That night, the victims, including four women, were allegedly surrounded and beaten by a mob of 30-40 people. A police case has been registered following a complaint by one of the women. She alleged that she was abused and manhandled. Another official said the complainant is an avid dog lover and animal rights activist. One more person was arrested by Thane Police's Crime Branch in connection with the Call Detail Record (CDR) racket that it is investigating, taking the number of persons arrested to 14, officials said today. Senior Inspector Nitin Thakre told PTI that Laxman Thakur, whose name cropped during the interrogation of some of the arrested accused, was nabbed yesterday evening. The official said that Thakur was produced before a magistrate who remanded him in police custody till May 14. The CDR racket was unearthed on January 24 when police, acting on a tip off, nabbed four private detectives from Kalwa here. The bodies of a man and a woman were found hanging from a tree in a village in Mathura district today, a police official said, suspecting it to be a case of suicide. The 23-year-old man and the 20-year-old woman were found tied with the same rope to the tree in Mahrauli village, SP, rural, Aditya Kumar Shukla said, adding prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide. He said the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and a thorough police investigation is underway.
The Chandausi Municipal Corporation chairperson and a Hindu outfit leader have been booked for allegedly attempting to grab a graveyard land here, police said. The FIR was lodged against municipal corporation chairperson and local BJP leader Indu Rani, Hindu Jagran Manch leader Kaushal Kishore and 50 to 60 others, Circle Officer, Chandausi, Omkar Singh said. They were booked following a complaint lodged by one Iftiqar, who alleged that Rani and Kishore along with the others arrived at the graveyard in Gandhi Park yesterday and tried to grab the land, he said. Law officers should ensure that frivolous appeals planned by ministries related to service matters of individuals do not reach the Supreme Court and special leave petitions are filed only in cases where a policy decision of the government is involved, the Attorney General is learnt to have told additional solicitors general. The A-G told additional solicitors general at a recent meeting that when the Law Ministry refers proposals of various ministries to file SLPs in the top court challenging a high court order relating to service matter of individuals, the law officers should ensure that frivolous pleas are not allowed to reach the apex court. Sources aware of the meeting said the move is aimed at checking unnecessary government litigation in the top court. If a SLP has to be filed by a central ministry or a department, it approaches the Law Ministry which seeks the opinion of one of the additional solicitors general. A 30-year-old man was today stabbed to death by another who accused the victim and his friend of staring at him, police said. The incident occurred in the morning in the congested Madanpura area of Nagpada in south Mumbai, police said. "The victim, Mohammad Rashid Said Ansari (30), was talking with his friend, Mohammad Rizwan Quereshi, when the accused, Fazil Mohammed Abdul Kayyum Ansari, picked up a fight alleging that the two were staring at him for a long time," a police official said. In the course of the argument, Ansari (35) pulled out a knife and stabbed Mohammad Rashid, he said. Rashid's friend sustained serious injuries while trying to fend off the attack, the official added. The body of an undertaial prisoner was found hanging inside the high-security Jharpada Special Jail here today, police said. Security personnel of the prison found undertrial prisoner Jitendra Biswal, arrested in a rape case, hanging inside a cell this morning and informed the jail authorities, police said. He was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him "brought dead". A case of unnatural death has been registered and investigation is in progress. Director General of Police (DGP), R P Sharma said that the Commissionerate Police was conducting investigation into the death of the undertrial prisoner. The body has been sent for postmortem and efforts are on to asceratain the circumstances that led to the incident, Sharma said.
A court here today sentenced four people, including a man and his son, to life imprisonment for killing a person over a land dispute last year. District and Sessions Judge Subhash Chandra also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on Vijay Singh, his son Ashok and his accomplices Nepal Singh and Ghanshyam. There was a land dispute between Narendra Singh, a lawyer, and Vijay, both residents of Jhalu town's Chaudhriyan area, according to the prosecution. Vijay and Ashok started construction work at the disputed land when the matter was pending in court, following which Narendra lodged a complaint at Jhalu police station, the prosecution said. On June 2, 2017, Narendra and his nephew were attacked with rods and lathis by the four people. Narendra was declared dead at a hospital.
