Revenue inspector held for taking bribe

A revenue inspector was arrested by vigilance sleuths for allegedly taking Rs 3,000 as bribe from a man to submit enquiry report required for a land holding certificate in Kandhamal district, vigilance release said. Vigilance officers laid a trap yesterday and caught Sanjaya Kumar Sahu, revenue inspector in Sankarakhola Revenue Circle while accepting the bribe money from the complainant, it said. The inspector had demanded Rs 3,000 from Subala Kumar Mallick of village Kambrikia to submit enquiry report regarding land holding certificate in favour of his father, it said. In a similar case, Assistant Revenue Inspector (ARI) Jogeswar Mohananda in Kaudiamunda Revenue Circle under Binka Tahsil in Subarnapur district was arrested yesterday for allegedly accepting Rs.2,000 from a man for issuance of fresh land revenue receipt in respect of the land purchased by him, the release said.

OHRC asks IGP to probe thrashing of old woman by inspector

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has asked the IG (Central Range) to furnish a report within two weeks on alleged thrashing of an elderly woman by a police inspector in Puri district. The OHRC's acting chairperson Juctice B K Mishra gave this direction while taking cognizance of the allegations made by one Prasanna Dash, advocate and president, Sachetan Nagarik Manch of Tiadi Sahi, Puri. "The matter should be enquired into by the IG of Police, Central Range, Odisha, Cuttack. The IG is requested to furnish his report in the matter in two weeks time hence and the matter the listed on 25.05.2018," the order said yesterday. Customs arrests man for smuggling one kg gold by hiding it in rectum

A man has been arrested by customs officials at the Delhi international airport for allegedly trying to smuggle more than one kg gold into the country by hiding it in his rectum. The accused was intercepted after his arrival from Dubai on Tuesday, a statement issued by the customs said. "A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of ten gold bars, collectively weighing 1.16 kg, concealed in his rectum," it said. The value of the gold bars was assessed to be Rs 36.55 lakh, it said.

Russian dies in Delhi

A 44-year-old Russian national died after falling unconscious at the FRRO office while his deportation formalities were going on, police said today. Sergey Erin died on Wednesday afternoon at AIIMS, they said. Erin was detained in the early hours of Wednesday after the police were informed that a man was acting violently and pelting stones at passersby near Inderlok in north Delhi. Some locals had tried to control him but Erin was banging his head on the road and hitting himself. He also resisted accompanying the police personnel when he was asked to do so, they said. At 3 am, he was taken to the Sarai Rohilla police station and then to the Bara Hindu Rao hospital for a medical exam where the doctors said he had minor abrasions, police added. In the morning, the police personnel took him to the FRRO office in RK Puram for completing his deportation formalities. SC dismisses petition seeking probe into Sridevi's death

Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the petition seeking a probe into Bollywood actress Sridevi's death.A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, dismissed the petition filed by Sunil Singh, the petitioner in the case.The top court did not find any merit in Singh's petition and thus dismissed it.Singh had approached the apex court after his petition was rejected by the Delhi High Court.The Apex Court had earlier dismissed two other similar petitions seeking a detailed inquiry into Sridevi's death.For petitioner, Sunil Singh, former Additional Solicitor General (ASG) and Senior Supreme Court lawyer, Vikas Singh argued before the Apex Court and submitted that there should be a detailed probe into Sridevi's death.The petition also claimed that there was an insurance of Rs 240 crores issued in Oman in the name of Sridevi, and the money could be released only if she died in UAE.On February 24, Sridevi passed away in Dubai, where she was ...

Woman arrested for trying to frame man in false rape case

A 26-year-old woman and two of her accomplices were arrested here for falsely implicating a man in a gang rape case, a police official said today. The woman had lodged a complaint on May 7 at the Chapar police station against one Ravinder Kumar, they said. During investigation, it was found that the woman had received Rs 40,000 for lodging the complaint, Superintendent of Police, City, Ombir Singh said. She along with two others were arrested yesterday for lodging the fake gang rape case, he said, adding that one of the accused was at large. The woman had claimed that Kumar along with his friends had raped her on the pretext of giving her a job, the officer said.

Unnao rape case: Victim, kin demand death penalty for BJP MLA

The Unnao gang-rape victim and her relatives on Friday demanded the death penalty for accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) allegedly confirmed his role in the crime.The victim said, "I demand the death penalty for Sengar for raping me and for the murder of my father."The victim's uncle said, "We demand protection for our family so that we can give our statement before the court fearlessly. ED books Upendra Rai under PMLA, raids multiple locations

The Enforcement Directorate has registered a money laundering case against journalist Upendra Rai and his associates and is conducting searches at premises linked to him in Delhi and Noida, officials said today. Rai is in judicial custody after the CBI arrested him on charges of alleged extortion and manipulation of an Income Tax Department case against a Mumbai-bound businessman. ED officials said the agency has charged Rai and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and taken cognisance of two CBI FIRs. They said the raids are being conducted at multiple premises like Greater Kailash-1 in the national capital and in adjoining Noida. The agency will probe if tainted assets were created by the accused by laundering alleged fraud money, the officials said.

Indian journalist held in custody in Australia on people smuggling charges

An Indian journalist charged with an aggravated people smuggling offence by Australian authorities for facilitating the travel of a "fake media contingent" to attend the Commonwealth Games will stay in custody for six more weeks, a media report said today. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, 46, was detained along with eight others by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers at the Brisbane Airport in March because his companions' accreditations were not genuine. The Commonwealth Games were held on the Gold Coast south of Brisbane from April 4-15. The eight, aged between 20 and 37, were allegedly holding temporary activity visas and claiming to be accredited media representatives, Brisbane Times reported. Sharma is described in court documentation as a journalist. Prosecutors claim his accreditation was genuine but he "facilitated" the group's travel, the report said. Man charged after 3-year-old son accidentally shoots himself

A Detroit man faces child abuse and weapons charges after authorities say his 3-year-old son picked up a loaded gun and accidentally shot and wounded himself. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says 34-year-old Melvin Cooley Cline III was arraigned Thursday on charges of second-degree child abuse, using a firearm during a felony and being a felon in possession of a gun. He's being held on a USD 100,000 bond. The boy was rushed to a hospital Tuesday and treated for stomach wounds. Police said his parents initially reported the shot came from outside the home, but investigators knocked down that story. The prosecutor's office says Cline was arguing with the child's mother when the boy picked up the gun in the living room. Court records didn't list a lawyer for Cline.

Elderly couple killed in Delhi after fire breaks out in house

An elderly couple was charred to death early today in a fire at their residence in west Delhi's Moti Nagar, police said. The deceased were identified as Chedi Lal (70) and his wife Laxmi (62), they said. Police said that a call was received about the fire around 3.25 am and two fire-tenders were rushed to the spot. The cause of the fire is being investigated, they said.

A rape victim and her family in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh had to face social boycott after the victim refused to change her statement in the court against the accused.The diktat was passed by the village panchayat as per which the family was denied to get any support and food grains from the village.As a punishment, the family was even forced to pay fine of Rs 11, 000."When the case was underway, some villagers came and threatened us to withdraw the case and compromise, to which we denied, following which they have been boycotting us," said the victim.The family of the accused has submitted a written complaint with the police against the Panchayat's Diktat.The accused allegedly gave the victim some intoxicating substance and made some videos, which he used later to blackmail and rape her.The victim later filed the case against the accused.

10 sentenced to life imprisonment for murder

Ten persons were today sentenced to life imprisonment for killing of a father-son duo by a group of 32 people over a land dispute in 2014. District and Session Judge Hemant Deshpande sentenced 10 persons in jail for life while acquitting 22 others giving benefit of doubt. Those sentenced include Mahadev Gahininath Bahir, Sukhadev, Shahaji Raghunath Bahir, Malhari Kailas Bahir, Dada Kisan Bahir, Rajendra Mahadev Bahir, Raghunath Sahebrao Bahir, Kailas Tatya Bahir, Somnath Uddhav Bahir and Sandip Ganpat Bahir. Asaram Yashwant Bahir (58) and his son Nitin (24) were attacked by a mob of 32 people due to land disputes in 2014. They both died in the attack. Fourteen witnesses were examined in this case.

Killers of Mexican students dissolved 12 victims in acid

Mexican authorities say drug cartel assassins who killed three film students dissolved a total of twelve people in acid. Interior Secretary Alfonso Navarrete said today that investigators had found DNA from 12 separate people in residual fats found in tanks where one of the killers confessed to having dissolved bodies. Navarrete did not say whether any of the DNA profiles matched those of the three film students abducted March 19 on the outskirts of the western city of Guadalajara. The three were working on a film project for school at a house that was apparently being watched by members of the Jalisco New Generation cartel. One suspect said the cartel abducted the students, killed them and dissolved their bodies. The house had once been used by a rival drug gang.

The Madras High Court today ordered that the report of an inquiry committee looking into the alleged attempt by a woman college teacher to lure students to extend sexual favours in return for higher mark be kept in a sealed cover once it was submitted. A division bench comprising Justices V Parthiban and P D Audikesavalu gave the interim direction during the hearing of a petition by the Revolutionary Students Youth Front against the appointment of the committee headed by former IAS officer A S Santhanam by Governor Banwarilal Purohit. Petitioner, represented by its Tamil Nadu co-ordinator D D Ganesan, sought an interim injunction restraining Santhanam from submitting any report before the completion of the CB-CID probe into the issue.
