A 30-year-old woman and her five year-old son were seriously injured when they were thrown out of a train by miscreants who also robbed them off their valuables near Mughalsarai's Vyasnagar railway crossing, the police said today. The woman, identified as Mamata, was travelling from Asansol to Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh with her son Ajay on Kolkata-Lucknow Summer Special train late last night, they said. She was sitting near the gate of the general compartment when the miscreants tried to rob her. But when she protested they beat her up, robbed her of cash and other valuables and pushed her, along with her son, out of the train, the police said. The duo was lying beside the tracks when they were spotted by a passerby who rushed them to a nearby hospital in the Dulhipur area with the help of some locals, they said. Two sepoys (guards) posted at the Taloja prison near here have been arrested on the charges of accepting bribe for 'not harassing an inmate', the anti-corruption branch of Thane police said today. Saming Kamble (27) and Mahesh Yadav (34) had allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 from the complainant for not harassing his father who is lodged in the jail, an ACB release said here. While the duo had allegedly accepted Rs 5,000 earlier, yesterday Yadav was caught while taking Rs 15,000 from the complainant, it said. Two people were arrested after a district-level leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and his home guard associate were shot dead by unidentified assailants in Dinpur village here, police said today. The incident took place on Tuesday night when assailants stopped the car in which SP leader Parvat Singh Yadav and home guard Umrav Singh were travelling and opened indiscriminate firing on the vehicle, police said. Singh was killed on the spot while the assailants dragged Yadav to a nearby forest area before murdering him, they said. Three people, including the father of a woman, were arrested in Bikaner today for allegedly thrashing to death a 22-year-old man from another community who they believed was involved in a relationship with her, police said. Saif Ali Khan was abducted by nearly half a dozen people, including the father and cousin brothers of the woman, on Tuesday night, they said. The Bombay High Court today opined that bureaucrats and judicial officers, who have at least one property in Maharashtra, should not be allotted another one under any government scheme. A division bench headed by Justice B R Gavai was hearing a public interest litigation filed by activist Ketan Tirodkar, which questioned the state government's decision to construct a high-rise residential building in suburban Oshiwara for sitting high court judges. Tirodkar argued that apart from the sitting judges, the government also allots flats to those judges who retire from the Bombay High Court or those judges, who were earlier here and were later promoted to the Supreme Court. After hearing the brief arguments, Justice Gavai said, "We feel that if a judge or a senior bureaucrat already has a house in the city or state, then he or she should not opt for another house under any government scheme. A Chinese man drove his car into pedestrians several times, killing two people, including a policeman, in central Hubei province, state media reported today. The driver allegedly drove directly into the bystanders several times, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported on the incident that took place on Monday. The policeman, Liu Guibin, in Jingshan County of the province had rushed along with a colleague to the spot after they were alerted about the speeding car. They tried to intervene but the driver could not be stopped. Meanwhile, they called for back-up and tried to get pedestrians out of harm's way, it said. The driver drove directly into the bystanders several times before Liu was run over as he was pushing others out of the way, the report said. Liu was sent to hospital, but he and another victim died while three others were injured, it said. An Indian-origin drug dealer has been jailed for nearly eight years by a UK court for conspiring to supply 10 kg of cocaine in London. Gurdip Samra, 44, was arrested in November last year as part of a joint operation by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) and Scotland Yard's Organised Crime Partnerships (OCP). The officers first arrested Samra's accomplice, Mark Lammin, after accosting him as he carried 10 kg of cocaine in a large holdall in Surrey, south-east England. Gold weighing around 8 kg and valued at Rs 2 crore was seized from a Chennai-bound Omni bus, in the district today and one person arrested in this connection, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials said.
