The Supreme Court today said its "real concern" was to see that a fair trial was conducted in the Kathua case after the Bar Council of India said the lawyers' body in the district had neither obstructed the Crime Branch from filing the charge sheet nor the advocate representing the victim's family. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said that if it finds the slightest possibility of lack of fair trial, it will transfer the case out of Kathua. The bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said the trial should be fair not only for the accused but also for the victim's family and the protection to them and their lawyers should be ensured. The bench also considered the issue of alleged obstruction by lawyers in administration of justice in the case and said," if the lawyers are at fault, they would be dealt in accordance with law". Man arrested for raping minor in Guwahati
A 27-year-old man was arrested today for abducting and raping a minor girl, along with one of his accomplices, in Guwahati, a police officer said here. The victim, a student of Class VII, was taken after she got down from her school bus around 2.30pm yesterday in Bharalumukh area of the state capital. The police nabbed the youth based on a complaint filed by her father in the matter, the officer said, adding that a search operation has been launched to nab the absconding accomplice. A medical examination has been conducted on the girl and the police are waiting for her report, the officer added.
Nadia man dies in Dubai, family appeals to bring back body
The family of a man who was killed allegedly in an accident in Dubai early this week has sought the help of the administration to bring back the body at Chhitka village in Nadia district. To that effect, Baburali Mondal, the father of one Mozammel Mondal (32) under Tehatta police station area, appealed through letters to the Tehatta BDO and also the district magistrate on Wednesday. Mozammel was killed allegedly in a crane accident in Dubai where he had gone there as a construction labourer on Monday evening. His employer informed the family on Tuesday, the victim's father alleged. His mother Tohara Bibi said,"the administration has assured us to provide help and cooperation to bring back the body." District Magistrate Sumit Gupta said he would forward the letter of the father of the deceased to the authorities concerned and provide help and cooperation to the family.
Two held for trying to extort money from politician in Thane
The Thane police has arrested two men for allegedly trying to extort Rs 2.5 lakh from a political leader in the city, an official said today. The accused got the contact number of the politician from his hoarding put up in the city and repeatedly called him between April 16 and 21 and demanded the money, he said. The victim approached the city police's anti-extortion cell which laid a trap and nabbed the two men, both aged 19 and hailing from the neighbouring Raigad district, when they came to collect the money at Amdoshi Phata here on April 21, the official added.
MACT absolves insurance firm as claimants file fake policy number
An additional zero in the insurance policy number made all the difference when the Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) settled a claim filed before it for a minor girl's death. Finding the policy number with the additional zero as fake, MACT member and district judge K D Vadane absolved the insurance company in the case and directed the owner of the offending tempo to pay Rs 5 lakh to the parents of the girl, who died in a road accident in 2013. The claimants - Ganesh Ramulu Racha (33) and his wife Umalata Ganesh Racha (28) - residents of Padmanagar in Bhiwandi township here, told the tribunal that on November 2, 2013 their daughter Vaishnu (then aged 5) was crossing the Hanuman Tekadi road when a speeding tempo hit her. The three-wheeler, being driven in a rash and negligent manner, ran over the girl, who sustained severe injuries in the accident and died on the spot, they said. Lawyer moves SC alleging contemptuous remarks by advocates, politicians
A lawyer today moved the Supreme Court alleging that various advocates and politicians are making contemptuous allegations against the apex judiciary on social media and on various news channels. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said that it will consider the petition on Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Advocate Gaurav Bhatia, who is also a BJP spokesperson, alleged that certain unsavoury and uncharitable remarks are being made by advocates and political activists and they should be taken note of by the judiciary as they are contemptuous in nature.
Three-year-old girl raped in MP
A 3-year-old girl was allegedly raped on Wednesday night in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district.The incident took place when the accused neighbour allegedly sneaked into the girl's house and found the victim alone in her house.The accused was arrested immediately after the incident."We have registered the case and the accused has been arrested. Further investigation underway," said Superintendent of Police (SP), RR Parihar.The girl was admitted to the district hospital at Chhatarpur where she is undergoing treatment.

Russell Simmons rape accuser drops lawsuit
Documentary filmmaker Jennifer Jarosik, who accused Russell Simmons of raping her in 2016, has dropped her lawsuit against him. Jarosik filed the suit in January, seeking USD 5 million, reported Variety. She had alleged that Simmons invited her to his home and then physically overpowered her. She also repeated the claim in an interview on "Megyn Kelly Today," in which she alleged that Simmons also sexually assaulted her at his office in 2011. Her attorney said the second episode fell outside the statute of limitations. Simmons denied the claims, and earlier this month filed an answer to the suit quoting from emails and text messages from Jarosik. In a message a few weeks after the 2016 incident, she wrote, "Sending love". A few days later, she wrote "I miss you Russell. are you ok?" Minor raped at gunpoint in Muzaffarnagar, accused held
A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth at gunpoint in Rahekda village in the district, police said here today. The incident happened yesterday in a nearby jungle in the village and the accused Kallu has been arrested, said Station House Officer (SHO) B P Singh of Bhopa police station. The victim was found in the jungle in semi-conscious state by the family members, he said. According to the complaint of the victim's uncle, a case has been registerd and the girl has been sent for medical examination, the SHO added.

The Supreme Court on Thursday will resume hearing the case of alleged rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl belonging to Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua area.The minor girl, who belonged to a nomadic Muslim tribe, was allegedly abducted, drugged, gang-raped, tortured and killed in January.In the wake of the incident, President Ram Nath Kovind, on April 22, promulgated the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, for effective deterrence against the commission of rape.The ordinance seeks the death penalty for the rapists of girls below 12 years of age and stringent punishment for perpetrators of rape particularly of girls below 16 years, thereby strengthening the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.On Tuesday, the Kathua Chief Judicial Magistrate rejected the bail application of the juvenile accused in the rape and murder of the aforementioned eight-year-old.
PDVSA ordered to pay Conoco $2 bln after Venezuela oil nationalization -arbitration

After the conviction of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu in a rape case, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation on Wednesday evening took down and demolished signboards of a bus stop named after him.As per the local body, all signboards and crossings named after him would be taken down, and new names would be assigned to them."Asaram Bapu has insulted the saint community and has caused shame to the society by doing wrong to a young girl. Therefore, it is our decision to eliminate all signboards and crossings bearing his name. Minor girl rescued from Nepal Border
A 12-year-old girl, who was kidnapped from central Delhi's Anand Parbat in February, was rescued from the Nepal border, the police said today. The girl was kidnapped by a 23-year-old man when her parents were at work. She used to live with her parents in the transit camp for Kathputli Colony residents, they said. We were able to trace down the accused through his mobile phone, the police said. The girl told the police that the accused had sexually abused her and later married her. The matter is being probed, the police added.

A Turkish court today convicted journalists from the opposition Cumhuriyet daily for helping outlawed "terrorist" organisations, in a trial seen as a test case for press freedom. The court in Silivri, outside Istanbul, handed out multiple sentences to 13 journalists and executives but they remain free pending appeal. Three others were acquitted. The judge ordered the release of Cumhuriyet chairman Akin Atalay who had been in jail for over 500 days despite his conviction, the correspondent said.
