Kejriwal's private secretary questioned
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's private secretary Bibhav Kumar was questioned today in connection with the alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash, police said. Earlier, the police had claimed that Kejriwal's former advisor VK Jain was questioned but later clarified that Kumar was quizzed at the Civil Lines police station. Kumar was questioned in the case of alleged assault on Delhi chief secretary at Kejriwal's residence on February 19 night, they said. Police has already questioned the 11 MLAs who were present at the chief minister's residence for the meeting in which Prakash had allegedly been attacked. Kejriwal, Jain and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia were also present at the meeting. On February 23, a police team had examined the CCTV system installed at the chief minister's residence in Civil Lines area and seized the hard disk. Loya ruling: Fadnavis seeks apology from Rahul Gandhi, Communist leaders
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today demanded an apology from Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Communist leaders and a few media houses for "attempting to malign" the image of BJP chief Amit Shah in the judge B H Loya death matter. He said the Supreme Court, in its decision today on PILs seeking independent inquiry into the judge's death, has accepted "the inquiry report submitted by the state government. Three years after Loya's death, an attempt was made to create suspicion and target Shah, Fadnavis said. The Supreme Court's ruling exposed the "Congress, Communists and a few media houses (which had taken up the issue)", the chief minister told reporters in Parbhani in Marathwada region of the state. Two minor girls raped in separate incidents in UP
Two minor girls were allegedly raped in separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh's Siddharth Nagar and Hamirpur districts during the last 24 hours, officials said. In Siddharth Nagar, a six-year-old girl was raped by her neighbour when she had gone for a marriage function in a village in Chilhia area yesterday night, he said. The matter came to light after authorities found the girl writhing in pain in a secluded place. An FIR was lodged against the youth identified as Jitendra Yadav, said SP Dharmveer Singh. The accused was arrested and sent to jail, he said. In another incident, a 14-year-old girl was raped by three men in a village in Binwar area. The incident took place last night when the victim went to graze cattle in the field, Additional SP, Lal Sahab Yadav said. The girl was held captive for three hours near a tubewell, where she was raped several times, he said. Special judge who quit after acquitting Aseemanand resumes duty
Special judge for NIA cases Ravinder Reddy, who had resigned after acquitting right-wing activist Swami Aseemanand and five others in the Mecca Masjid blast case on Monday, resumed duty today. Barely hours after the judgement on April 16, Reddy had tendered his resignation. Reddy, the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, had put in his papers to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge citing "personal reasons" for his decision and also applied for leave. "His application for resignation is still pending. He has joined duty and is attending the bench," a source in the judiciary told PTI on condition of anonymity. It was still not clear whether his resignation has been accepted by the high court, but the judge joined duty today as his leave was "cancelled", they said while refusing to comment further on the matter. Court discharges Kejriwal, Azad, in DDCA defamation case
A Delhi court today discharged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and suspended BJP MP Kirti Azad in a criminal complaint filed against them by the Delhi and District Cricket Association and its then Vice President Chetan Chauhan for allegedly defaming the DDCA and Chauhan. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal granted the relief to Kejriwal and Azad, saying one of the complainants, Chauhan, has "no locus to prosecute this complaint any further because he has been relieved of his position as Vice President and the DDCA has now a new representative to prosecute the case." BJP's JK unit website hacked for brief period; restored
The website of the BJP's Jammu and Kashmir unit was today hacked for a brief period with the hackers posting a message demanding justice for an eight-year-old girl who was raped and murdered at Kathua in January. The website was restored after some time. The hackers, who called themselves "Team Kerala Cyber Warriors", posted a message accusing the state unit of protecting a "gang of pedophiles" who had aligned with some of the ruling BJP's office-bearers. The hackers, who used the colours of the Indian flag in the message, said there should be nothing beyond humanity and "discrimination cannot be tolerated". They demanded that rapists be hanged. Govt asks states to allow private licence for taxis, LMVs to conform to SC order
To ensure compliance with a Supreme Court order, the government has asked states to allow drivers to use private licence for driving taxis and light vehicles for commercial purposes. However, commercial driving licences are required for trucks, buses and other medium and heavy commercial vehicles. "ln view of the legal position as settled by the Supreme Court ..., the requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act, '1988 to obtain the transport licence would arise in case of medium/ heavy goods and passenger vehicles only. "No other vehicle will require any separate endorsement, even if they are used for commercial purposes," Ministry of Transport said in an advisory to states. The advisory also said the exemption from obtaining the endorsement for commercial vehicles would apply to motor cycles and light motor vehicles like taxis, e-rickshaw/e-cart. Corporator "custodial" death case: NCP demands judicial probe
The NCP today demanded a judicial probe into what it claimed the "custodial death" of a party corporator from Ahmednagar earlier this week. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik alleged that the corporator, Kailas Giravale (55), was beaten up in the custody by Ahmedngar police officials during April 11 to April 15. Giravale, arrested for allegedly vandalising the office of Ahmednagar SP, died due to a heart attack at Pune's Sassoon Hospital while he was under judicial custody, on April 16. "Giravale was beaten by a local crime branch inspector, a Ahmednagar police inspector, a police inspector, and a constable when he was in police custody from April 11 to 15," Malik said while addressing a press conference here. UN experts urge Iran to cancel Kurd's death sentence
Three United Nations human rights experts called on Iran today to annul a death sentence handed to an Iranian Kurdish prisoner, citing concerns he had been tortured in detention. The experts warned that executing Ramin Hossein Panahi, who they said was arrested last June for alleged membership in the Kurdish nationalist group Komala, "would be unconscionable". In a joint statement, they said he had been "sentenced to death for taking up arms against the state" due to his alleged membership of the group. Iran's Supreme Court apparently reaffirmed the death sentence earlier this month, they said, adding that his case was due to be passed to the country's Office of Implementation. "We are deeply disturbed by reports that Mr Panahi has suffered human rights violations before and during his trial, including incommunicado detention, torture and ill-treatment, and denial of access to a lawyer and adequate medical care," they said. Miscreants snatch rifle of ATM guard in Kashmir's Shopian
Miscreants today snatched a rifle from a bank ATM guard in south Kashmir's Shopian district, police said. A group of unarmed men, whose identity was not immediately known, snatched a 12 bore rifle from the ATM guard in the Pinjoora area of Shopian, a police official said. He said the ATM belonged to the Jammu and Kashmir Bank. Police have taken cognisance of the incident, the official said.
