A man has been arrested in Kairana town of the neighbouring Shamli district for allegedly killing his seven-year-old daughter over a dowry dispute with his wife, police said today. Imran and his brothers have been booked for poisoning to death the girl, Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari said. They were arrested after Imran's wife, who was living with her parents, filed a police complaint against her husband and his two brothers, Tiwari added.
A former U.S. Army sniper and two other ex-soldiers have been convicted in New York for the contract killing of a woman in the Philippines. A federal jury yesterday found Joseph Hunter, of Owensboro, Kentucky, and Adam Samia and Carl David Stillwell, both of Roxboro, North Carolina, guilty of committing murder-for-hire and other charges. Prosecutors say Hunter recruited the two for the cold-blooded hit on the Filipino real estate agent in 2012. He paid them each $35,000. The 12-day trial offered a window into the clandestine world of private mercenaries willing to kill for money. Defense attorneys had said the case was too weak to convict them. All three face up to life in prison. Hunter already is serving 20 years over a plot to kill a federal agent.

A 40-year-old man was stabbed to death by three youths as one of them suspected that the victim was in an illicit relationship with his mother, police said today. The youths-- Aman (20), Ashish (21) and Sahil (19) have been arrested, they said. Police said that the man was stabbed 22 times with a dagger. The incident was reported from southwest Delhi's Dwarka. Two persons arrested for allegedly robbing a 75-year-old woman at knife point at her flat in suburban Jogeshwari last week, police said today. Yet another prosecution witness in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh alleged fake encounter case turned hostile today, taking the number of such witnesses to 50 so far. Two witnesses, Manjusha Apte and Salim Khan, were examined by the CBI before special judge S J Sharma in connection with the alleged fake encounters of Shaikh and his aide Tulsi Prajapati, who were killed in 2005 and 2006, respectively. According to the CBI, Apte and her in-laws were travelling in the same bus from Hyderabad to Sangli, in which, Shaikh and his wife Kausar Bi were their co-travellers before they were allegedly picked up by a police team in November 2005. While admitting before the court that she was travelling in that bus, Apte said she didn't see anything as she was sleeping. Later, special public prosecutor B P Raju declared her hostile. The Goa government filed an affidavit before the Bombay High Court today seeking its nod to allow export of the ore lying outside those mining leases whose royalty charges are already paid to the state exchequer. The mining industry in the coastal state came to a halt on March 16 after the Supreme Court quashed all 88 mining leases renewed by the BJP government in 2015. "Mining operations and transportation are two different issues and hence transportation of the ore which is stacked outside the mining lease area is not banned by the Supreme Court through its directives on February 7, 2018," the government said in the affidavit filed before a division bench of justices N M Jamdar and Prithviraj Chauhan. Clearing the decks for commencement of admissions to post graduate medical courses, the Madras High Court today dismissed petitions seeking reservation of 50 per cent seats in PG diploma courses under the all India quota to in-service candidates. The court, in its interim order, had yesterday directed the Director General of Health Services and state selection committee not to allot seats for PG medical courses to any student, both under the all India quota and state quota, until further orders. The authorities can go on with the counselling process, but shall not allot seats till further orders, Justice S Vaidyanathan had said. A Panchkula court today convicted nine persons for subjecting scores of inmates of a government-funded Rohtak orphanage to a string of heinous offences like rape, forced abortion and bonded labour in the infamous 2012 'Apna Ghar' shelter home case. Those convicted by Panchkula's special CBI court included orphanage head Jaswanti Devi and many of her kin, who, along with other convicts are still in jail since their arrest by the CBI in 2012. The quantum of sentence would be pronounced on April 24. Apna Ghar was an orphanage housing destitute and mentally-challenged persons, mostly girls. The gory tales of inhuman torture of the hapless inmates at the orphanage surfaced in May 2012 following a raid on it by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Over 100 inmates, including children and minor girls, were rescued by the Commission following the raid. Taking a serious view of rise in crime against women and elderly people, the Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu government to file a status report on how many FIRs were registered in such cases. A division bench of justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and M Dhandapani also directed special government pleader Siva Shanmuga Sundaram to file a report on the status of investigation on such FIRs as on date and measures taken to prevent such crimes by June 6. A PIL was filed by advocate AP Suryaprakasam seeking safety of women and proper use of the 'Nirbhaya Fund' allotted by the Centre to prevent atrocities against women. The court orally observed that crime against women were on the rise, particularly offences of chain snatching and attacking or murdering senior citizens when they were alone for gain. Nabha jailbreak prime accused Harminder Singh Mintoo died of cardiac arrest in Punjab's Patiala city on Wednesday.Mintoo was lodged in the Patiala Central Jail along with other accused of the 2016 jailbreak case.
