India today filed its second round of written reply in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) relating to the case of Kulbhushan Jadhav who was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court in April last year on charges of espionage and terrorism. The External Affairs Ministry said the reply was filed in keeping with an order of the ICJ earlier this year. A six-year-old girl was raped and strangled to death in Pakistan's southern Sindh province, triggering violent protests that led to the death of a person allegedly in police firing, media reports said today. The girl, who had gone missing on Sunday, was found dead in the bushes in Manghopir yesterday night. She was today identified as a resident of Baloch Goth, Orangi Town. The police had confirmed that the child's body bore marks or torture. The post-mortem at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital confirmed that she was raped and tortured. The Supreme Court today took exception to the union water resources department secretary not filing an affidavit in a matter relating to the Polavaram Project in Andhra Pradesh despite its order and directed him to do so in three days. The direction came after the apex court was informed that a chief engineer of the department has filed an affidavit instead of the secretary. "There is an order of this court. You have to comply with it," a bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta told the counsel representing the Centre. "This is not in compliance of our order. We direct the secretary of the water resources department to file the affidavit within three days," the bench said. The bench had on February 15 asked the secretary of the department and several states, including Odisha and Telangana, to file "specific affidavits" stating they were bound by the 1980 award of Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal which had adjudicated the river water utilisation dispute among the basin
The ED today questioned Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, for the second time in connection with its probe in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case, officials said. They said the investigating officer (IO) of the case recorded Karti Chidambaram's statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Karti Chidambaram was first grilled at the central probe agency's office here on April 10 for about ten hours in connection with the case. He has been summoned for questioning next week. The case relates to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2006 by his father. Two persons were arrested for allegedly assaulting the owner of an east Delhi restaurant and then firing in the air to scare people, police said today. Ashu and Amit, both 22 years old and residents of Mandawli, were arrested yesterday. They were helpers at a toll plaza of the Anand Vihar ISBT, they said. On April 14, the police were informed about a quarrel at a restaurant over payment of a bill. The owner had told police that a man had come to his restaurant and demanded a 50 per cent discount on the bill. This led to an argument during which the accused threatened him with dire consequences, the owner had alleged. The accused called some of his associates, who beat up the owner and one of his relatives, police said. The owner's relative suffered serious head injuries when one of the accused hit him with a chair and a helmet. The accused fired three rounds in the air while they were leaving the restaurant, they added. The police are looking for the other accused.

Police claimed to have arrested a man today in a theft case in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district and recovered more than dozen stolen vehicles. Ten cars, three motorcycles and one puck-up truck were among the stolen goods recovered from the accused, an official said. "During the course of investigation of a theft case, police apprehended a man, identified as Abdul Hamid, from Budgam district," the official said. During questioning, Hamid led police to the recovery of stolen vehicles and electronic items worth lakhs of rupees.

AIADMK ruled-Tamil Nadu will file a review petition in the Supreme Court challenging its order modifying certain provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, joining Kerala and three BJP-ruled states in taking such a step. The decision was arrived at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister K Palaniswami with his cabinet colleagues, including his deputy O Panneerselvam and officials today, an official release said. "The Chief Minister directed that a review petition be filed in the Supreme Court immediately in the interest of SC/ST members," it added. The apex court recently laid down guidelines to prevent the alleged misuse of the Act.
