Indian arrested for visa violations in Lanka

An Indian national, who arrived in Sri Lanka on a tourist visa, has been arrested for allegedly doing business illegally in the country's western province, according to media reports today. The 52-year-old man was arrested by the police on Saturday when he was selling garments at Rajamalwatta Junction in Modara, Colombo Page reported. The suspect, who was not identified, has been arrested for doing garment business illegally, violating immigration and emigration rules, police said. The suspect will be produced before the court today. Modara Police are conducting further investigations.

Court extends interim protection of Karti Chidambaram

The interim protection given to Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P. Chidambaram, in the Aircel-Maxis case has been extended till the next date of hearing which is May 2 by a Delhi Court.On March 24, Karti Chidambaram was granted an anticipatory bail by a Special Delhi Court, which had asked him to appear before the investigating officer whenever he is summoned.Karti was arrested on February 28 at the Chennai airport on his return from the United Kingdom, for his alleged role in facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for INX Media Ltd. and its directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.He allegedly took service charges for getting the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving funds from abroad worth Rs. 305 crore in 2007 when his father was the finance minister.The Aircel-Maxis deal is part of the wider 2G scam that engulfed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime.The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered a First Information ...

Kathua accused plead not guilty, ask for narco test

The eight people accused of raping and killing an eight-year-old girl here today pleaded not guilty and asked the district and sessions judge for a narco test. As the trial in the case began here, the district and sessions judge asked the state Crime Branch to give copies of the chargesheet to the accused and fixed April 28 as the next date of hearing. Of the eight people accused of the crime, one is a juvenile who is also under arrest. He moved a bail application before a judicial magistrate which will be heard later today. The child from a minority nomadic community was allegedly held in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua district for a week in January this year during which she was kept sedated and sexually assaulted before being bludgeoned to death. Kathua case: SC to hear at 2 PM two separate pleas

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear at 2 PM two separate petitions including the one filed by Kathua-based lawyer Deepika Singh Rajawat, representing the family of an eight-year-old girl who was gangraped and killed, alleging that she was facing threat to her life for pursuing the matter. Another plea filed by Delhi-based lawyer Anuja Kapur, seeks transfer of the sensational gangrape case from Kathua trial court to a local court in the national capital. Kapur has also sought transfer of probe to the CBI, besides seeking exemplary compensation to the family of the victim of the case. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud considered the submission advanced by senior advocate Indira Jaising, representing Rajawat and Kapur, for urgent hearing of the two petitions today itself. Court extends interim protection from arrest to Karti in Aircel-Maxis case

A Delhi court today granted Karti Chidambaram interim protection from arrest till May 2 in two cases filed by the CBI and ED in the Aircel-Maxis matter arising out of the 2G spectrum cases. Special Judge O P Saini granted relief to the son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram after the counsel for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought time to argue on Karti's application seeking anticipatory bail. The submission was supported by the CBI counsel who requested the court to put up the matter for next date. The court had on March 24 granted interim relief to Karti till today after considering that both the investigative agencies had sought time to file their responses on his anticipatory bail plea. Karti had filed a plea seeking protection from arrest in the Aircel-Maxis matter, in which the CBI and the ED lodged cases in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The matter pertains to grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to firm M/S Global Communication Holding Services .

17 arrested for rioting in UP

Police today claimed to have booked 30 people for rioting at Deval village here over domestic dispute. Around 17 people were arrested in this connection, they said. The incident was reported last evening when two groups clashed with each other over sending a married woman to her parents' house forcefully, SHO Kuldeep Sharma said. The groups came to blows and pelted stones at each other, he said. Six persons, including two women, were injured in the incident, the officer said.

Mecca Masjid blast case verdict today

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Hyderabad on Monday will pronounce its verdict in the sensational Mecca Masjid attack which was allegedly carried out by a group of right-wing terrorists 11 years ago on May 18, 2007.The NIA Special Court at Nampally had concluded the hearing and will pronounce the judgment in the case which claimed nine lives.The blast which took place at the Mecca Masjid which is adjacent to the historic Charminar in the Old City during Friday prayers had left 58 injured.The judgment will decide the complicity of five of the 10 accused charge-sheeted in the case.The NIA took over the case from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2011, in which ten persons allegedly belonging to right-wing organisations were named as accused.However, only five of them were arrested and faced trial in the case. The trial in the Kathua rape and murder case against the eight accused men who allegedly drugged, tortured and gang-raped an 8-year-old girl in a village temple here for a week in January this year, begins today.The Hearing of the case is scheduled to take place at the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate.According to reports, the Jammu and Kashmir government has appointed two special public prosecutors, both Sikhs, for the trial in the sensitive case. Three arrested for faking loot of money

Three persons, including two employees of a private bank, were arrested for allegedly misappropriating Rs 3.4 lakh in Mayurbhanj district, the police said. The three were arrested yesterday after investigation showed that the two bank employees and their associate had misappropriate the money and made false claims in an FIR, said Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar. The accused were identified as manager of Manatri branch of Bandhan Bank, Bhajan Kar and Doorstep Officer of the bank, Sitaram Sahu and their associate Braja Sekhar Pradhan. Sahu had on April 5 lodged an FIR at Barasahi police station alleging that four unidentified persons looted Rs 3.4 lakh at gun point near Durgapur while he along with the branch manager was returning from Baripada Branch of the bank in a bike, he said. However, investigation into the case showed that Sahu, along with the branch manager and Pradhan, had conspired and misappropriated the money, the SP said. The entire sum of Rs 3.4 lakh .

Tantrik, 4 aides arrested for killing youth

A tantrik and his four associates were arrested today for allegedly killing a youth for performing witchcraft earlier this month, a police official said. According to Superintendent of Police (City) Shravan Kumar Singh, tantrik Bunti Saini and his associates -- Rajendra Yadav, Vinod Saini, Laxman Saini and Sonu Saini -- allegedly killed Sachin on April 2 for performing witchcraft.
