Man arrested for molesting woman during IPL match in Mumbai

One person has been arrested for allegedly molesting a 24-year-old woman during an IPL match at Wankhede Stadium here yesterday, a senior police official said today. The incident took place during the match between Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians last evening, he said. "The victim complained that Gendraj Dadulal Satnami, who distributes water in the stadium, touched her inappropriately. Policemen at the stadium responded to her call of help and nabbed Satnami," the official said. "An FIR has been registered and the accused has been arrested under section 354 (a) of the IPC for sexual harassment. He has been remanded in police custody for two days," said Manoj Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I.

Chandigarh citizens protest rape-murder of 8-yr-old Kathua girl

Several people today joined a protest called by civil organisations here to seek justice for an eight-year-old-girl, who was raped and killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district. The protest was organised by the "Concerned Lawyers of Chandigarh" and the "Chandigarh Help Group" at Sector 17 Plaza. "We are demanding justice for the girl who was raped and killed in Kathua," city-based advocate and member of the Concerned Lawyers of Chandigarh, Maninder Pal Singh Dhindsa, said. People carried placards having slogans such as "no more shielding of rapist", "human rights are not optional", "silence is betrayal-speak up" and formed humans chains. Trial in Kathua rape-murder case begins tomorrow

The trial in the gruesome Kathua rape and murder case begins tomorrow against eight accused who allegedly held an eight-year-old girl in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua district for a week in January this year during which she was kept sedated and sexually assaulted before being bludgeoned to death. The accused include a juvenile against whom a separate charge sheet was filed. The chief judicial magistrate of Kathua will be committing one of the charge sheets, in which seven people have been named, to the sessions court for trial as mandated under the law. The chief judicial magistrate will, however, hold the trial for the juvenile as it is the designated court under the juvenile act, according to officials. The Jammu and Kashmir government has appointed two special public prosecutors, both Sikhs, for the trial in the sensitive case, a move being seen as made to ensure "neutrality" in view of Hindu-Muslim polarisation over the case. Woman molested during IPL match

Panel formed to probe Jammu lawyers' conduct in Kathua rape and murder case

Bar Council of India (BCI) said on Sunday that a panel has been formed to probe the actions of Jammu and Kashmir Bar Association lawyers, who had stopped police from filing a chargesheet in the Kathua rape and murder case."In the meeting, we decided that a five-member team will investigate the case. The team will go to Kathua and Jammu and talk to people about the conduct of the Bar Association," said Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman Manan Kumar Mishra on the same.Mishra further said a report based on the investigation will be submitted to the Supreme Court by April 19."If any lawyer is found guilty in the case, we have the rights to cancel their license for a lifetime," Mishra further said.The BCI chairman also said the bar association has been asked to withdraw its strike.The recent investigation into the January incident has unfolded the gory details of the crime that was allegedly committed inside a temple where the girl was sedated, raped a multiple times, and later murdered ..

Mecca Masjid bomb blast case verdict likely tomorrow

A special NIA court here is expected to pronounce the judgement tomorrow in the 2007 case of Mecca Masjid blast which claimed nine lives. The fourth additional metropolitan sessions-cum-special court for NIA cases had concluded the trial and last week posted the case for judgement on April 16. The blast at the historic Mecca Masjid here on May 18, 2007 during Friday prayers had also left 58 others injured. After initial investigation by the local police, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI), which filed a charge sheet. Subsequently, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case from the CBI in 2011. Ten persons allegedly belonging to right-wing organisations were named as accused in the case. However, only five of them -- Devendra Gupta, Lokesh Sharma, Swami Aseemanand alias Naba Kumar Sarkar, Bharat Mohanlal Rateshwar alias Bharat Bhai and Rajendra Chowdhary - were arrested and faced trial in the case. Girl found murdered; may have been held captive, raped: Surat Police

A minor was allegedly held captive, tortured and raped before being killed, the Surat Police said today, weeks after the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua in Jammu region sent shock waves across the nation. The body of the unidentified girl, believed be between nine and 11 years, was found in Bhestan locality here and had 86 injury marks, they said. It was spotted lying in bushes near a cricket ground on the morning of April 6 by some passersby, the police said. The autopsy report said there were 86 injury marks on her body, including the private parts, indicating that she was tortured and raped, Inspector K B Jhala of Pandesara police station said. Body of girl found from canal in Haryana

The body of an unidentified girl, aged about six-seven years, was fished out today from a canal in Titoli village in Haryana's Rohtak district, police said. The body, which was in a bag, appeared to be about a week old, they added. The locals spotted the bag floating in the canal. Some parts of the body were visible from the bag and the villagers informed the police immediately. "The girl's age could be around six to seven years and the body could be about a week old," a Rohtak police official said. "We have sent teams with the description of the body to the nearby districts for the identification of the girl," he added. A post-mortem report was awaited, the official said.

Law minister may meet CJI to discuss govt-judiciary differences

Amid growing differences between the government and the judiciary over a host of issues, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is likely to meet Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra later this month. Sources in the government said the Department of Justice in the law ministry has prepared a note for the minister on pending issues to be raised at the proposed meeting. A law ministry official said the two can meet to discuss various issues and that the meeting should not be hyped. "There are various channels for them to communicate. Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir today claimed that it was after his demand, the accused in the Kathua rape case were arrested and said he never raised questions on the state police's probe in the matter. Court sentences two Bangladeshi nationals to 14 months in jail

A local court convicted two Bangladeshi nationals for staying in the country without valid documents and sentenced them to 14 months in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on them. Assistant Judge H B Shelke of the district court convicted Ridoy Ashab Gulam Khan and and Milon Arif Shaikh on Friday and ordered that the two be deported to Bangladesh after completing their sentences. The two were arrested on February 18 last year from the Poonam Garden area of Mira Road here by a team of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell of Thane (Rural) Police, public prosecutor Vinit Kulkarni said. They were arrested under relevant sections of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950 and the Foreigners Act. Advocate Sunil Patankar, appearing for the accused, had told court that the two were brought into the country by a human trafficker.

The Crime Branch of Thane police has arrested a man and seized Sambar antlers from his possession, an official said today. Senior inspector Jairaj Naravare said that police had got a tip-off that a man was arriving at Upvan area here to sell smuggled sambar antlers. Police laid a trap and arrested Santosh Bamne (31), resident of Andheri in Mumbai, and seized two sets of sambar antlers, worth Rs 4 lakh in the illicit market, he said. Youth kills father over family dispute in WB's Malda district

A 42-year-old man was killed by his son following an altercation over a family dispute in Malda district, police said today. The incident occurred at a village here under the jurisdiction of Englishbazar police station yesterday night, the police said, adding that the deceased's son was arrested. The youth hit his father with a bamboo stick on his head following the altercation, a senior police officer said. Teen burnt to death in West Midnapore

A 13-year-old boy was killed after he was set on fire at his neighbour's house in West Midnapore district, police said today. The incident happened at Mirzapur village under the jurisdiction of Kharagpur Local police station yesterday, the police said. The boy had gone to a nearby shop to buy some items. His family started looking for him since he did not return home for a long time, a police officer said. They found him on the verandah of their neighbour's house, the officer said. The boy was taken to a hospital with serious burn injuries where he died, he said. The boy's neighbour, a woman, has been arrested since the boy was found at her house, the officer said. Mobile internet services suspended for 24 hrs in 4 districts of Punjab

Mobile internet and SMS services were suspended for 24 hours in four districts of Punjab following arrest of four people in connection with a clash between members of a Dalit outfit and Hindu groups, an official spokesperson said. Mobile internet services, including 2G, 3G, 4G, CDMA and GPRS, all SMS services and all dongle services provided on mobile networks, except voice calls, in Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and SBS Nagar shall remain suspended till April 16, he said. The spokesperson further said that all telecom services providers in the state of Punjab and head of BSNL (Punjab Jurisdiction) are directed to ensure compliance of this order. Any person found guilty for violation of aforesaid order, would be liable for legal action, he said.
