Police raided a chemical factory in neighbouring Thane and confiscated 75 litres of liquid mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant drug, worth Rs 7.5 crore, officials said. They added that it was the first time Mumbai police had seized mephedrone, also known as 'meow meow' among peddlers and addicts, in liquid form. "Acting on a tip-off about a drug peddler in suburban Andheri, the police laid a trap and arrested one Shahid Hussain Shah with 300 grams of mephedrone worth around Rs 6 lakh," an official said. Shah told police that he had sourced the drug from a firm called "Shree Sharda Chemicals" in Thane district's Badlapur MIDC area, police said. "Shah revealed that this firm stored the drug in powder and liquid form in its factory. A raid was carried out by a team from Amboli police station under sub-inspector Daya Nayak yesterday," the official informed. Five persons were arrested today after fake currency notes with face value of Rs 1.5 lakh were seized from them in Balasore district of Odisha, police said. The matter came to light when a man of Khirkona village under Simulia police station area was detained by the police after some counterfeit notes of Rs 2,000 denomination were detected while he was depositing money in Khirkona Seva Cooperative Samiti, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Balasore Sadar), Pravash Chandra Pal said. On the basis of the information given by the man, the police conducted raids in several parts of the district during which the five accused were arrested.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) today asked the Jammu and Kathua bar associations to call off their strike and decided to send a five-member team headed by a former high court chief justice to investigate the alleged incident of misconduct on part of the lawyers there in connection with the Kathua rape-murder case. BCI chairman and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra told reporters that if any lawyer is found guilty, then the council will go to the extend of cancelling the legal practise licence. "The BCI has decided to issue a direction and make an appeal to the Jammu High Court Bar Association and the Kathua Bar Association to call off their strike with immediate effect. We have made a request and issued a direction to them to convene an extra-ordinary meeting tomorrow to decide on the issue," he said. Fifteen people, including nine women, were hospitalised when they fell ill after allegedly consuming spurious toddy in Nalgonda district of Telangana, police said today. A four-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in Nilagiri area of Odisha's Balasore district. A resident of Hatasahi under the jurisdiction of Nilagiri police station yesterday lodged a complaint alleging that his daughter was sexually assaulted by his neighbour on April 13, police said. The girl was playing outside the house when the neighbour offered her chocolates and called her to his house where she was sexually assaulted, police said. After returning home, she narrated the incident to her mother and complained of severe pain following which she was taken by her father to Nilagiri hospital. The National Green Tribunal has sought a detailed list of various industries of Ghaziabad and Hapur districts on a plea alleging that incessant extraction of groundwater has led to severe depletion of water table in the area. A bench of Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore ordered the respective District Industries Corporations (DIC) to submit the the lists by the next date of hearing on April 25, failing which, it warned, heavy costs would imposed on them. "Last opportunity is granted to respondent no 10 (DIC) to file the list of industries in Ghaziabad and Hapur. It is made clear that in case such list is not filed before the next date, the cost of Rs 5,000 per day thereafter shall be saddled on respondent no 10, till it is submitted," the bench said. Police raided an illegal sand mining operation along the banks of the Yamuna in Shamli district and seized an excavator machine, officials said today. The raid was conducted last night after police received a tip-off regarding the sand mining mafia operation in the area falling under the Jhinjhana police station in Shamli, Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari said. A team of police and revenue officials, led by Sub-divisional Magistrate V K Singh, rushed to the spot and seized an excavator machine, Tiwari said. A 40-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by a man following a heated argument in Yamunanagar, police said today. The incident took place yesterday night at Raghunath Puri area of Yamunanagar, they said, adding that the deceased was identified as Pinky. Following a heated argument, Kamal, the accused, allegedly opened fire at Pinky from his licensed revolver and fled from the spot, the police said. Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the residence of Pakistan's Supreme Court judge Ijaz ul Ahsan here in two separate incidents only hours apart, media reports said today. Justice Ahsan was part of a five-member apex court bench that heard the high-profile Panamagate case last year that led to the disqualification of the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
