A juvenile allegedly attempted to rape a four-year-old girl in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. The boy, a Class 9 student, had gone to deliver milk to the family in Udhampur town when he found the girl alone and tried to rape her yesterday, a police official said. However, he fled the scene after the cries of the girl attracted the attention of her neighbours who rushed to the spot, the official said. He said police has registered a case and started a hunt to nab the accused. Both the victim and the accused belong to different religions, the official said.
A BAMS doctor was among two persons arrested yesterday for allegedly killing his 56-year-old friend in the latter's apartment in Bharuch on April 8, police said today. A police officer said robbery was the motive behind the crime, as prime accused Dr Sarfaraz Ghadiyali was running a debt of Rs 3 lakh. The other accused is identified as Javed Sheikh (29) who was working as a compounder for Dr Ghadiyali. Gold worth over Rs 42 lakh was seized from three passengers who arrived at the international airports here and Thiruvananthapuram, from gulf nations. The intelligence teams of Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram Airport Customs effected the seizure yesterday, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said. The sleuths effected seizures of a total of 601.800 grams of gold valued at 17.42 lakhs in two separate cases here from two natives of Malappuram who came from Riyadh, he said. In Thiruvananthapuram, Customs officialsintercepted a passenger who arrived by an Emirates Flight andrecovered seven gold biscuits totally weighing 816.38 grams. The apex court, which was dealing with a case related to the 2008 Gujarat serial blasts, noticed that the prosecution has named over 1,500 witnesses in the matter. "Why you (prosecuting agencies) always believe in quantity? In every case, there are 100-200 prosecution witnesses. Yesterday, there was an accident case in which no eye-witness was there but around 200 prosecution witnesses were named. A man, who claimed to cure backaches through witchcraft, has been convicted of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl on pretext of treating her ailment, with a city court relying on the sole testimony of the victim. Additional Sessions Judge Amit Kumar held Shankar guilty of sexually assaulting and inappropriately touching the girl after sending her mother out to get some items to be used in treatment. The court, which held the man guilty of the offence of sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, is yet to pronounce the quantum of punishment. The Bar Association Kathua (BAK) today withdrew its offer to contest without charge the case of the eight people accused in the rape and murder case of an eight-year-old Muslim girl in the district. The BAK's decision comes a day after the Supreme Court took a serious note of lawyers obstructing the judicial process and initiated a case on its own accord saying such impeding of the process of law "affects the delivery of justice". The top court said that lawyers' bodies have a solemn duty to not obstruct advocates representing the accused or the victims' family in courts. The Supreme Court on Saturday dismissed the bail plea of a French national, who is accused of sexually assaulting a minor.Brilliant Patrick Jacky Henry Maurice sexually assaulted a minor in Mumbai last year and was arrested on November 7, six months after an FIR was lodged on May 18, 2017. He was charged under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).A division bench of the apex court on Saturday dismissed the plea and asked Maurice to surrender within three days.Although a local court granted bail to Maurice on November 24, Bombay High Court quashed his plea on April 2 this year. To challenge the same, the French national had approached the top court.
