Juvenile tries to rape four-year-old
A juvenile allegedly attempted to rape a four-year-old girl in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. The boy, a Class 9 student, had gone to deliver milk to the family in Udhampur town when he found the girl alone and tried to rape her yesterday, a police official said. However, he fled the scene after the cries of the girl attracted the attention of her neighbours who rushed to the spot, the official said. He said police has registered a case and started a hunt to nab the accused. Both the victim and the accused belong to different religions, the official said.
Doctor among two held for killing his friend for money
A BAMS doctor was among two persons arrested yesterday for allegedly killing his 56-year-old friend in the latter's apartment in Bharuch on April 8, police said today. A police officer said robbery was the motive behind the crime, as prime accused Dr Sarfaraz Ghadiyali was running a debt of Rs 3 lakh. The other accused is identified as Javed Sheikh (29) who was working as a compounder for Dr Ghadiyali. Suleman Mahamad Bava alias Manar Bava was found dead in his apartment in Bharuch last Sunday, with a stab wound. "He was living alone in the flat since he divorced his Pakistani wife several years ago," said police inspector Sunil Tarade. He said Bava became close with Dr Ghadiyali and Sheikh and would visit their clinic in Lallubhai Chaklaarea in Bharuch regularly. "Bava used to share information with the duo about his hobby of collecting antique coins and foreign currency notes. Man held for indulging in obscene act at woman's doorstep
A man was arrested on Sunday on the charge of indulging in an obscene act in front of a woman in South Delhi.The accused Sandeep Chouhan was booked under sections 294 (Obscene acts and songs) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).As per the woman's complaint with the Vasant Kunj Police, the accused rang the doorbell of her house on Thursday night, and when she opened the door, he started doing obscene acts while talking to her. When the woman called her friend to the door, he ran away.The accused, a taekwondo teacher by profession, was identified with the help of a CCTV footage.It was further found that he had remained in judicial custody for about 14 months on charges of murder and sexual harassment, and had been released on bail.
16-year-old set ablaze in Kanpur
A 16-year-old girl was allegedly set ablaze by three persons in Vaina village of Kanpur Dehat's Rajpur area on Saturday.The incident happened on Saturday evening.The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently under critical condition.Meanwhile, police has arrested one person, while search operation is underway for the other culprits.

Gold worth over Rs 42 lakh was seized from three passengers who arrived at the international airports here and Thiruvananthapuram, from gulf nations. The intelligence teams of Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram Airport Customs effected the seizure yesterday, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said. The sleuths effected seizures of a total of 601.800 grams of gold valued at 17.42 lakhs in two separate cases here from two natives of Malappuram who came from Riyadh, he said. In Thiruvananthapuram, Customs officialsintercepted a passenger who arrived by an Emirates Flight andrecovered seven gold biscuits totally weighing 816.38 grams. The seized items worth Rs 25.75 lakh were concealed in his trouser pocket and shoes, Kumar said. The passenger has been arrested under section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962, he added.
Unnao: Woman alleges rape by councilor
Adding to the list of rape allegations against politicians, a woman from Uttar Pradesh's Safipur town in Unnao district has accused a councillor of raping her.The woman alleged that the councillor, Imran, and his accomplice took turns to rape her, while the other filmed the act, and then blackmailed her to keep mum about it.The victim's husband told reporters that the accused was a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP) who claimed that his influence would prevent him from any action against him.He added, "A complaint was registered after two months, but the accused are not being arrested."Meanwhile, the Unnao Police said that an FIR was immediately registered,Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anup Singh told ANI, "The FIR was registered at the time of complaint itself. The Supreme Court has wondered as to why investigating agencies "always believe in quantity" and make hundreds of prosecution witnesses to prove their charges before the court of law. The apex court, which was dealing with a case related to the 2008 Gujarat serial blasts, noticed that the prosecution has named over 1,500 witnesses in the matter. "Why you (prosecuting agencies) always believe in quantity? In every case, there are 100-200 prosecution witnesses. Yesterday, there was an accident case in which no eye-witness was there but around 200 prosecution witnesses were named. We really wonder why so many witnesses are made," a bench comprising justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said. Witchcraft: Man convicted of sexually assaulting girl
A man, who claimed to cure backaches through witchcraft, has been convicted of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl on pretext of treating her ailment, with a city court relying on the sole testimony of the victim. Additional Sessions Judge Amit Kumar held Shankar guilty of sexually assaulting and inappropriately touching the girl after sending her mother out to get some items to be used in treatment. The court, which held the man guilty of the offence of sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, is yet to pronounce the quantum of punishment. The convict faces a maximum of five years imprisonment. The court relied on the testimony of the victim, who said her mother had taken her to the convict's house in north-west Delhi for treatment of her backache through witchcraft but, instead, he inappropriately touched her private parts after sending her mother out to bring lemons for treatment. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two persons for allegedly trying to bribe a Customs officer in Mumbai.The CBI has registered a case on a complaint from an Assistant Commissioner, Customs (Marine and Preventive) in Mumbai regarding the offer of a bribe.The probe agency had seized a tempo containing mobile phone accessories worth Rs. 4 crore near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) when it was trying to smuggle the goods into the city without paying Customs duty.Subsequently, the tempo belonged to Avista Multi Trade Pvt. BAK withdraws offer to contest accused's case for free
The Bar Association Kathua (BAK) today withdrew its offer to contest without charge the case of the eight people accused in the rape and murder case of an eight-year-old Muslim girl in the district. The BAK's decision comes a day after the Supreme Court took a serious note of lawyers obstructing the judicial process and initiated a case on its own accord saying such impeding of the process of law "affects the delivery of justice". The top court said that lawyers' bodies have a solemn duty to not obstruct advocates representing the accused or the victims' family in courts. "We have withdrawn our offer to contest the case free of cost. Accused are free to engage any individual advocate and exercise their respective rights of defence in the court. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday detained a woman aide of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection with the Unnao rape case.Sengar has already been arrested by the CBI in connection with the alleged rape of 17-year-old-girl in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district. The Supreme Court on Saturday dismissed the bail plea of a French national, who is accused of sexually assaulting a minor.Brilliant Patrick Jacky Henry Maurice sexually assaulted a minor in Mumbai last year and was arrested on November 7, six months after an FIR was lodged on May 18, 2017. He was charged under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).A division bench of the apex court on Saturday dismissed the plea and asked Maurice to surrender within three days.Although a local court granted bail to Maurice on November 24, Bombay High Court quashed his plea on April 2 this year. To challenge the same, the French national had approached the top court.
