Adityanath 'real culprit' in Unnao rape case: Cong

The Congress today alleged that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was the "real culprit" in the Unnao rape case and demanded his immediate sacking. The opposition party also hit out at the BJP-led government in Uttar Pradesh over its "indictment" by the Allahabad High Court, saying the chief minister's position had become "rudderless" in the state. "The real culprit of the Unnao victim, who was reportedly raped in June, 2017 and who pleaded at the doorstep of the BJP chief minister, even attempting self-immolation, is no one else but the CM, Ajay Singh Bisht alias Adityanath, and he should immediately be sacked," Congress communications in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said in a statement here. Anil Vij orders inquiry into irregularities in MGNREGS

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij has ordered a vigilance inquiry into alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Kheri Lamba village in Kaithal district. Vij, who was presiding over a meeting of the District Grievance Redressal Committee in Kaithal today, ordered the inquiry after hearing complaints from villagers regarding fake job cards and other irregularities, according to an official release. A total of 12 complaints were taken up by the minister in the meeting. On other complaints, Vij ordered action against the sarpanch of Dherdu village for irregularities in various development works. A villager accused the sarpanch of embezzlement of funds sanctioned for construction of a cremation ground.

Man trampled to death by elephant in Odisha

A man was trampled to death by an elephant in Odisha's Dhenkanal district today, police said. The incident happened in the Sadar forest range area when the man was on his way to a canal, the police. The deceased was a resident of Goudakateni village under the jurisdiction of Motanga police station, the Forest Ranger of Sadar range, Darsania Bhoi, said. This was the third death due to elephant attack within a span of two days, he said. A compensation of Rs 40,000 was paid to the family members of the deceased, Bhoi added.

One killed, 4 injured as auto-rickshaw turns turtle

One person was killed and four others injured when an auto-rickshaw overturned in Howrah district today, police said. The incident took place at Khaujjtui under the jurisdiction of Bagnan police station, they said. One person died on the spot while the injured were rushed to Bagnan hospital from where they were referred to Uluberia sub-divisional hospital, police added.

CBI arrests two persons for trying to bribe Customs official

Two persons were arrested for allegedly trying to bribe a Customs officer, Central Bureau of Investigation officials said today. "A tempo carrying smuggled goods, including mobile accessories, valued at Rs 4 crore was intercepted by a Customs official near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai," a CBI official said. Following the incident, Rajendra Singh Rajpurohit, director of a firm called Avista Multi Trade Pvt, along with his brother Manav Jagarwal, came forward to claim the goods, the official said. "Later a custom broker, Himanshu Ajmera, came to meet the Customs official claiming to be a representative of Avista Multi Trade and allegedly offered him a bribe," he said. A case was then registered on the complaint of Assistant Commissioner, Customs (Marine and Preventive), Mumbai who stated that private individuals were offering him a bribe, the official said. US cyclist injured

A US national was injured today while cycling in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, police said. Walden Daniel, a resident of New York, fell from his bicycle when he was going towards Ghat area from Kanol village here. He was injuredin the incident, the police said. Locals rushed him to a government hospital in Ghat from where was referred to srinagar, they said.

Woman, son arrested for setting ablaze daughter-in-law

A woman, along with her son, was today arrested for allegedly trying to burn her daughter-in-law alive following a quarrel, police said. Jamnaben Mange (79) and her son, Ashok Mange (40) were arrested after they poured kerosene on Ashok's 30-year-old wife and set her ablaze, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. The incident happened at around 7pm yesterday at Mange's house in Raghunath Nagar area of Wagle Estate here, police said. "The victim has suffered 70 per cent burn injuries and is currently being treated at a hospital here. We have filed a case under section 498 (A) (cruelty on woman by husband or relative of husband) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigations are underway" the official informed. Police said that the incident happened when the victim, who had shifted to her parents' house in Ghatkopar following constant quarrels with her mother-in-law, had come to her husband's home to pick up some documents of her daughter.

Man held with 3 bullets at IGI airport

A Hyderabad-bound passenger was apprehended at the Delhi airport for allegedly carrying three live bullet rounds in his baggage, an official said today. A CISF officer, deputed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) to scan the baggage of commuters, detected a bullet-like object on the x-ray monitor yesterday evening, they said. "Three live bullet rounds of 7.65mm calibre were recovered from the passenger identified as A A Choudhary. "Choudhary and his wife were not allowed to take the flight and were handed over to the police as he could not produce any documents for carrying the ammunition," the official said, adding the man was later booked under sections of the Arms Act.

Man arrested for repeatedly raping, threatening widow

A 25-year-old man was today arrested for allegedly raping and threatening a woman on the pretext of marriage, police said. Rushikesh Nimbre, a resident of Mumbra, was arrested on the complaint of a 29-year-old widow who claimed that the accused had repeatedly raped her between December, 2016 and April, 2018 on the pretext of marriage. "He would threaten the victim that he would kill her daughter in case she complained. The victim had even changed her residence to avoid Nimbre. He managed to find her and then raped her," an official said. Police registered a case of rape and criminal intimidation under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code after the victim filed a case last night, said officials. Further investigations by Mumbra police are underway, he said.

Surat rape victim's body has 86 injury marks

Police have found body of a nine-year-old girl in Surat with 86 injury marks in Surat.Police recovered the severely injured body of the girl near from a cricket ground in Bhestan area of Surat on April 6. After five-hour long postmortem, it was revealed that the girl was raped and tortured for at least eight days. She was strangled to death.The girl has not been identified yet and none from her family has come forward to claim the body. It's still not known who the killer is. Unnao rape case: Accused MLA sent to seven-day CBI custody

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the main accused in Unnao rape case, was sent to seven-day Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody, here on Saturday."We support fair investigation. Unnao rape case: CBI makes second arrest; woman who lured victim to MLA arrested

The CBI today made a second arrest in the Unnao rape case as it took into custody Shashi Singh, the woman who allegedly took the victim to BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on the day of crime, officials said. A special court in Lucknow has sent Sengar, the prime accused in the case, to a seven-day CBI custody, they said. In her complaint to UP Police, now part of the CBI FIR, the victim's mother has alleged that Shashi Singh had lured her daughter and took her to Sengar's residence where he raped her. 5 arrested with illegal weapons

Five people were arrested today for allegedly carrying illegal weapons and cartridges in Patan town of Rajasthan's Sikar district, police said. The seizure was made from a SUV vehicle. Police recovered an illegal 12-bore pistol and 10 cartridges, the police said. Dalit govt employee complains against IAS officer in Kerala

A Dalit government employee of the state secretariat here has complained to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, alleging mental harassment by a senior IAS officer. According to the complaint by V Devadas, an office assistant, he was allegedly being forced by Principal Secretary, General Administration, Biswanath Sinha, to wash his lunch box, plates and clean the table. He alleged that if he protested, he was forcibly made to do more odd jobs. The complainant urged the chief minister to transfer him to another department. Criminal arrested after encounter in Odisha

A 27-year-old man, allegedly involved in at least 17 criminal cases, was arrested today following an exchange of fire in Ganjam district, police said. The incident happened near Jhada Ankuli under the jurisdiction of Berhampur Sadara police station. The accused was wanted for being involved in various incidents of dacoity, attempt to murder and extortion, a police officer said. He was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here after he received bullet injuries in his legs during the encounter, the officer said. Two police personnel also received injuries when the accused hurled bombs at them in an effort to escape, the Sub-divisional Police Officer of Berhampur Sadara, Ashok Kumar Mohanty, said. A firearm, one round of ammunition, two bombs and a motorbike was seized from him, he said.

The 92-year-old former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics has sued Olivarez after an in-depth investigative piece by The Hollywood Reporter about an alleged elder abuse and a sour feud over his estate came to light. CBI arrests key suspect in Kotkhai rape and murder case

In a major breakthrough, the CBI has arrested the key suspect in the Kotkhai rape and murder case, officials said here today. The suspect was arrested last night and is being brought here for questioning, they said. The officials did not reveal the identity of the suspect as it is a court-monitored probe. They said he has been sent to the CBI custody till April 25. A 16-year-old girl had gone missing after school hours on July 4, 2017 from Haliala forest in the Kotkhai area of Shimla district. Her naked body was found in the forest on July 6 and the post-mortem report confirmed rape. The rape case had created a furore in the state before the assembly polls last year.
