First person sentenced in Russia probe draws 30 days, fine

A Dutch attorney who lied to federal agents investigating former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was sentenced today to 30 days in prison in the first punishment handed down in the special counsel's Russia investigation. He was also ordered to pay a USD 20,000 fine. Alex van der Zwaan's sentence could set a guidepost for what other defendants charged with lying in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation may receive when their cases are resolved. Among them are a former White House national security adviser and a Trump campaign foreign policy aide. Van der Zwaan had faced zero to six months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines, and his attorneys had pushed for him to pay a fine and leave the country. Journalists faced arrest, assault in US: watchdog

Journalists in the United States were assaulted 45 times last year, and 34 were arrested while covering news, a report from a media rights watchdog said Tuesday. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, in its first annual assessment of threats to journalistic freedom in the United States, cited a total of 122 incidents including physical assaults, arrests, equipment seizures and border checks. "While it does not capture every press freedom incident that has occurred, the tracker strives to document the number of times journalists in the United States were arrested, assaulted, subjected to equipment searches or seizures, or detained at the border," the report said. "It also highlights particularly serious denials of access and chilling statements by public officials." 5-year-old boy sodomised by 55-year-old man: police

A five-year-old boy was allegedly sodomised by a 55-year-old man in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri, the police said today. The accused sexually assaulted the minor when his parents were away on Saturday, they said. When they returned, the boy narrated his ordeal to them, following which a case was registered. Bharat Bandh: Agra schools to remain closed today

In the wake of violent protest against the Supreme Court ruling on SC/ST Act, all schools in Agra, barring those where board exams are underway, will remain closed on Wednesday.The Office of the District Magistrate issued the directive, keeping in view the safety of students.The Dalit community on Monday called for nationwide bandh against the alleged dilution of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by the Supreme Court.The bandh turned into a violent protest claiming lives of nine people and injuring many.The apex court had, on March 20, introduced the provision of anticipatory bail in the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act while directing that there would be no automatic arrest on any complaint filed under the law.The Centre filed a review petition in the apex court asking it to reconsider its ruling.However, the top court refused to stay its order and asked all parties to submit detailed replies within two days.

3 arrested in Delhi with 160 kg cannabis

Three men were arrested near ISBT Anand Vihar and 160 kg cannabis was seized from them, the police said today. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar said there was information that several gangs are involved in procuring cannabis from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha and supplying it to drug peddlers in the national capital. On March 31, the crime branch of Delhi police received information that some men would be coming to supply contraband to Delhi in a white car taking the Yamuna Expressway, he said. A car was intercepted near Anand Vihar, ISBT and three persons, Salman, Saddam and Koti Ottaya were nabbed, the officer said adding 16 parcels containing 160 kg cannabis wrapped in newspapers were seized from them. The arrested accused were involved in procuring and supplying cannabis for the last six months, the Kumar said.

Minor raped by CRPF jawan in UP's Bijnor

A minor was allegedly raped by a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan in Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor on Tuesday.Following a complaint by the girl, the police nabbed the accused even as he blackmailed her by circulating her pictures on social media.The accused has been identified as Rahul Chauhan, a jawan of the 160 Battalion CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir.Rahul, who is deployed in Jammu and Kashmir, had come to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh.Meanwhile, police also registered a case against the CRPF jawan.

Sheena murder case: accused-turned-approver Rai seeks bail

Shyamvar Rai, accused-turned-approver in the Sheena Bora murder case, today filed a bail application before a special CBI court here, an official said. "Rai has moved a bail application, saying there is no one to take care of his family and their financial condition is very bad," a CBI official said. Rai wrote a one-page bail application in Hindi and sent it to the court through the authorities at Arthur Road jail here where he is presently lodged, said the official. Special CBI judge J C Jagdale directed the CBI to file its reply tomorrow, he said. Rai was the first witness to be examined in the case. 65-year-old woman held for killing her septuagenarian hubby

A 65-year-old woman was arrested today for allegedly killing her 75-year-old husband who she suspected was having an "extra-marital affair with two women" from their neighbourhood in suburban Chembur, police said. The deceased, identified as Chotelal Mourya, was found lying injured in his home in Memon Nagar area in the eastern suburb, where he was residing with his wife Dhanu Devi, on Sunday, a police officer said. A police team rushed to the house and shifted Mourya to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead before admission, he said. Initially,police registered a case of accidental death and launched a probe. Jammu Bar Association to suspend work for four days from tomorrow

The Jammu High Court Bar Association today decided to suspend work in all courts for four days from tomorrow to press for deportation of illegally settled immigrants and handing over the alleged rape-cum-murder case of a minor girl in Kathua district to the CBI. The bar announced the decision after a four-hour long meeting, a spokesman said. "As a corollary of the general house meeting, a resolution was passed that work in all the courts, including the high court, shall remain suspended from April 4 to April 7," he said. Man killed, another injured in factional fight ahead of polls

One person was killed and another one injured during clashes, stated to be between factions of a political party, in separate incidents in Malda district ahead of the panchayat polls, police said today. Both the incidents occurred while selecting candidates of the panchayat election to be held early next month. A 25-year-old man was shot dead in Kaliachak area last night when he was going past the area on a bicycle, police said. CBSE papers leak: School principal questioned again, may get a clean chit

The Delhi Police's Crime Branch questioned the principal of a school, whose two teachers were arrested for their alleged role in the leak of Class 12 economics paper, again today, after which officials said they had not found anything yet to indicate his involvement in the leak. The police are trying to find the link to the module in which handwritten papers were circulated days before the Class 10 mathematics and Class 12 economics papers. So far, they have quizzed 150 people, including students and teachers, but they have not been able to trace the source of the leak. Sehwag extends helping hand to mother of deceased tribal youth

Activist Rahul Easwar on Tuesday confirmed that he has received a cheque of Rs 1.5 lakhs sent by former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag for the mother of, a tribal man who was beaten to death in Kerala's Palakkad earlier this year.Easwar will hand over the cheque to Madhu's mother on April 11.Madhu was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people in Palakkad's Attappadi village.He was tied and thrashed after he was caught shop-lifting. Attacks on lawyers: HC pulls up police for trying to shield accused

The Delhi High Court today came down heavily on Delhi Police for trying to shield people involved in the arson attacks on the properties of lawyers in the national capital, saying the agency adopted a "brilliant strategy" to save the accused. The high court said it was "extremely pained" to see the manner in which the matter was being dealt with by the special cell of Delhi Police and added, "We searched earth to heaven to book these persons, but you are trying to save them? A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar also criticised a trial court order by which one of the arrested accused in the arson attacks was granted bail on March 26. Mumbai court reserves verdict in J Dey murder case till May 2

A special MCOCA court here today reserved till May 2 its judgement in the journalist J Dey murder case in which gangster Chhota Rajan is one of the accused. "The court is likely to pronounce the verdict on May 2," Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat said. The veteran crime journalist was shot dead in suburban Powai on June 11, 2011 while he was on his way home. During the trial, the prosecution examined 155 witnesses while eight of them turned hostile. The CBI court framed charges against Chhota Rajan in the case in 2016. According to a supplementary charge sheet by the CBI, Rajan had Dey killed because he was miffed with some articles written by him, and also because a planned book of his portrayed Rajan as a 'chindi' (petty) criminal. Rajan was arrested at Bali airport in Indonesia on October 25, 2015, and was deported to India. HC adjourns appeals to April 10

The Madras High Court today adjourned three appeals filed by the Income Tax Department against a single judge order quashing the IT proceedings for some assessment years against former union ministers P Chidambaram, Jayanthi Natarajan and violinist L Subramanian. The first bench, comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice A Selvam, before which the appeals came up, posted the matter for hearing to April 10. The single judge had set aside reopening proceedings for the assessment years 2009-10 and 2010-11 against Chidambaram, besides quashing an IT notice issued to Natarajan. In the case of Subramanian, the judge set aside the order of the assessment officer levying interest for the assessment years--- 1992-93 and 1993-94--and 50 per cent for each of the AY 1994-95, 1995-96.

Sohrabuddin trial: Two more witnesses turn hostile; 47 so far

Two more witnesses were today declared hostile during the trial of Sohrabuddin Shaikh alleged fake encounter case before a Mumbai court, taking the number of such witnesses to 47. Mohamad Naimuddin and Shilpan Singh, two prosecution witnesses, were examined by the CBI before special judge S J Sharma. According to the agency, Naimuddin, an employee of a private bus service, had stated that he remembered picking up five passengers, including a woman, in Hyderabad on the morning of November 22, 2005. According to the CBI, one of these passengers was Shaikh, who was abducted by a team of the Gujarat Police when he was travelling by a private luxury bus from Hyderabad on the same day, and was later killed. 2 members of "fatka gang" held for snatching mobile phones

Two persons, suspected to be the members of "fatka gang", have been arrested for allegedly snatching mobile phones from passengers travelling on long distance and local trains on Central Line, the GRP said today. The duo, arrested from Kalyan railway station recently, are currently in judicial custody. The accused, identified as Ajit Jhade and Deepak Thokal, are part of a gang that targets commuters standing on footborads of trains, said DCP, GRP (Central Railway), Samadhan Pawar. He said the members of the "fatka gang" typically perch themselves atop a signal or electricity poles along railway tracks and hit commuters with a stick or hands when the train slows down. Woman's partially burnt body found inside house

A 27-year-old woman was found dead with burn injuries at her house here today, police said. Her one-and-half-year-old son was rescued after neighbours alerted police early today when they noticed smoke from the house which was locked from inside, police said. The partially burnt body of the woman who was identified as Soumya was found inside, police said. The incident occurred around midnight yesterday, a senior police official said.
