A girl allegedly tried to commit suicide by jumping off the terrace of her residence in southern part of the city's Behala area, police said today. The girl, who worked as a model and also acted in a few television soaps, allegedly jumped off the terrace in Behala's Satyen Roy Road following a quarrel with her parents yesterday afternoon, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said. The condition of the girl, in her early 20s, was stated to be critical, he said. "The girl was rescued lying in a pool of blood on the road beside her residence. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she is under observation," the officer said.
Social activist Teesta Setalvad has been booked for allegedly securing central government funds worth Rs 1.4 cr fraudulently for her NGO Sabrang between 2010 and 2013, the police said today. A case has been filed against Setalvad and Sabrang trustees by Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Friday night on the basis of a complaint lodged by her former close associate Raees Khan Pathan, the police said. "We had received a complaint alleging that Setalvad and the trustees of her NGO, Sabrang Trust, used fraudulent means to get funds of Rs 1.4 crore from Union HRD Ministry between 2010 and 2013. Based on that, we registered an FIR against her and trustees of the NGO," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Rajdeepsinh Zala. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today claimed that the Haryana government has released Delhi's share of water ahead of the scheduled hearing in the Supreme Court over the issue of water crisis in the national capital. Chief Spokesperson of AAP's Delhi unit Saurabh Bharadwaj said the Delhi government has moved the Supreme Court in the matter and they have now learnt that their Haryana counterpart has released the share of water. "We have learnt from sources that the Haryana government has today released Delhi's share of water which would normalise the situation in Delhi within 24 hours," he said. A newborn, who had been snatched away by a monkey from its mother's side yesterday at Talabasta village of Banki in Cuttack district, was found dead today inside a well near the house, the police said. The police and forest department officials could not trace the 16-day-old boy during their day-long searches yesterday. The family members of the new born first spotted the body floating in the 15-feet-deep well and retrieved it with the help of villagers, police said. The eyewitnesses said the body bore an injury mark and was probably inside the well for over 24 hours, although it had not bloated. Six people have been arrested on the charge of peddling drugs and 6.5 kg cannabis was seized from them, the police said here today. During a raid conducted at a number of places in Rajiv Vihar colony under Khoda municipality area last night, the six people were arrested, SP (City) Akash Tomar said. The accused have been identified as Mohit, Sanjiv, Mukesh, Pramod, Omveer and Yusuf, the officer said, adding during interrogation they have confessed that they were involved in selling cannabis. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused and further investigation into the case is underway, Tomar said.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police is investigating the death of a 35-year-old man who was found hanging from a tree in a forest area in Reasi district today. Mohammad Mushtaq Gujjar, a resident of Bidda village, was found hanging in Nambla forest, a police spokesman said. He said the police department was alerted by locals. A woman, who was believed to have been murdered by her husband eight years ago, was arrested after she surfaced this week with her second husband and six children in Pakistan's Punjab province. The woman, 30-year-old Asma Bibi, reappeared at her village Phalayan in Jhelum district, 250 kms from Lahore this week under a new name of Neelam. A family member of her first husband filed a complaint against her after which police arrested her. A Jhelum Police spokesman said Asma in 2009 had been married to Ibrar Ahmed. Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey's son Arijit Shashwat was arrested here today over his alleged involvement in recent communal clashes in Bhagalpur, and remanded to 14-day judicial custody, the police said. A man shot dead his brother and nephew in a family dispute in Bihar's Bhagalpur district late last night, police said today. The deceased have been identified as Pulis Mandal (40) and Dilip Mandal (26), both residents of Rani Diyara village of Ekchari police station of the district, Kahalgaon Circle Inspector Sidheshwar Rajak said. The accused Kapil Mandal shot the two following a heated argument over selling of a piece of land, the Inspector said adding, an FIR has been lodged against the accused on the basis of his mother's statement. The charred body of a 16-year-old boy, reported missing since February, was found near Belwa Sultanjot village here in the district, the police said today. Teenager Swaraj Singh's body with burn and other injury marks were found with his bike found near him. The bike too had been burnt. A 25-year-old woman and her two daughters were found burnt to death in their house in Rajasthan's Dungarpur district today, with police suspecting it to be a case of suicide. Anita Koted and her two daughters aged three years and six years were found dead in their house. On being informed by locals, police reached the spot and shifted the charred bodies to hospital, a police official said. A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by seven men in this district of Uttar Pradesh, the police said, adding that three of the accused were arrested. The incident took place in the Sandana area yesterday when the girl, accompanied by a male cousin, was returning home from a fair, the police said. The seven accused surrounded the duo, beat up the girl's cousin and raped her, they added. On reaching home, the girl narrated her ordeal to her family members, who informed the police.
