An Indian national has been arrested for allegedly fleeing to Malaysia with 4,69,000 Singapore dollar of his employer here, according to a media report today. Bahurudeen Kuthpudeen, 43, was supposed to deliver three cash cheques totalling SGD 469,000 (USD 357,907) from RHB Bank to his Singapore employer Mohamed Thahir Exchange, reported The Sunday Times. The employer lodged a police report on Tuesday. Officers from the Royal Malaysia Police arrested Bahurudeen less than 12 hours later on Wednesday, and extradited him to Singapore the next day. The police recovered cash of about SGD 24,000 from him, the report said, adding he has been charged with one count of criminal breach of trust. Bahurudeen will be remanded for a week at the Central Police Division. He will be back in court on Friday at 9am. If convicted, he can be jailed for up to 15 years and fined, the report said.

Veteran BJP legislator and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Babulal Gaur has advocated the introduction of a 'police commissionerate system' in major cities of the state to curb crimes against women. This system will vest magisterial powers in senior IPS officers in big cities and help in taking effective and quick decisions in dealing with crimes, he said. In the present system, such powers lie with district magistrates. Under the current system, the district police chief is a senior superintendent of police (SSP)-rank official. A wanted criminal was arrested in an encounter, police said today. A sub inspector and the suspected criminal were also injured in the encounter that took place yesterday. Pappu alias Ramchandra Das, carrying a reward of Rs 10,000 on his head, was surrounded by a police team on a tip off and during an exchange of fire he was injured, Superintendent of Police, Kamal Kishore said. The injured have been rushed to a hospital where their condition was stated to be stable.
The Supreme Court has taken note of a woman's plea that her husband, an Army man, has been languishing in jail for 27 years without a final decision on the death penalty awarded by a Court Martial for killing two of his colleagues. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar took note of the plea of Mithilesh Rai, wife of the jailed Army man Lance Naik Devendra Nath Rai and issued notice to the Ministry of Defence, the Chief of Army Staff and others and asked them to respond within four weeks. Rai, 60, whose mental health suffered due to the long incarceration, was awarded the death penatly by the General Court Martial (GCM) in 1991. The Centre confirmed the noose. A class X student has suffered 85 per cent burn injuries as she set herself on fire after allegedly being repeatedly sexually harassed by a group of youths.The student is said to be in critical condition and has been referred to AIIMS hospital in Bhopal from Bundelkhand Medical College of Sagar. The Supreme Court order banning automatic arrest and registration of cases for alleged harassment of SCs and STs will dilute the law which aims to protect the marginalised, the government is likely to tell the top court. In its review petition to be filed in the apex court this week, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is likely to say that the SC order will weaken the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, sources in the government said. The ministry could also plead that the latest order would reduce the fear of law and may result in more violations, the sources said. The top court had recently banned automatic arrests and registration of criminal cases under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The DRI has seized gold worth Rs 1.68 crore, which was smuggled into India from Myanmar, and arrested three persons here. The trio was held at Howrah Railway Station after they deboarded a train on Wednesday, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said in a press release issued today. DRI officials recovered 34 gold bars of foreign origin cumulatively weighing 5.6 kg and valued at Rs 1.68 crore from the accused, it said. Gold smuggled from Myanmar through Moreh in Manipur was being carried by the three on the Saraighat Express from Guwahati to Howrah. They disembarked at a station before Howrah and took a local train. Gold was concealed in their shoes. Two among the three were found to be habitual offenders and had earlier been booked in a case at Siliguri by DRI, the press release said. The Delhi High Court has sentenced two persons to seven years in jail for killing a street vendor by hitting him with a gas cylinder after he asked them to pay for a plate of momos. The high court, while deciding the appeals of the two men, reduced their sentence from life imprisonment awarded to them by a trial court which had convicted them for the offence of murder. It reduced the jail term after modifying their conviction for offence of murder to causing death of a person without any intention. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta considered that both men were of young age at the time of the incident in 2012 and had no history of any criminal activity. Their conduct in the jail was also found to be satisfactory. The court, however, maintained the conviction of Najafgarh residents Dharmendra and Jitender for the offence of attempt to murder. It also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 each on both convicts. The two men were held guilty by a trial court for murdering momos vendor .

A Malian jihadist was arrested today and handed over to the International Criminal Court to face war crimes charges for the destruction of Timbuktu and sex slavery, the tribunal said. The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Saturday clarified that although there is no ban on MPs or MLAs from practicing law in courts, anyone participating in the impeachment or removal of a judge will not be allowed to do so."No ban on MP/MLAs from practicing in courts, but there is an exception.
