Bhagalpur violence: Arijit Shashwat surrenders

Union Minister Ashwini Choubey's son Arijit Shashwat surrendered before the police on Saturday night in connection with the Bhagalpur violence case.Shashwat, whose bail plea had been rejected earlier in the day by a Bhagalpur Court, stated that he would approach higher authorities."The FIR filed against me is totally fake. I am going to surrender before the police (in Bhagalpur violence case), but it is not under any kind of pressure. I was told that my anticipatory bail was rejected. Therefore, in respect of the court, I am surrendering. However, we will approach higher courts. Minor boy's body found in drain in outer Delhi

The body of a three-year-old boy, who was missing since Friday, was found in a drain in outer Delhi's Narela today, police said. Police suspect that the child could have accidentally fallen into the uncovered drain. Till now, no foul play is suspected, they said. Police had yesterday registered a case of kidnapping on the complaint of his parents. The child lived with his parents and sister in a rented home in Gautam Colony. His father works as a labourer, said police. On Friday afternoon, the boy was playing outside his home with other children while his family members were inside. Few minutes later, his mother went to bring him inside but found him missing. She initially thought that her neighbour would have taken her son to his home. Man rapes 8-yr-old girl; her kin, locals beat him to death: Police

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a family acquaintance, who she had accompanied to a religious function, following which the man was beaten to death by her family and locals at the Chaman Vihar colony of Tronica city, the police said today. The incident happened last night when Jitendra, a scrap dealer, had taken the girl to a religious function ("Mata Ka Jagaran". "But instead of dropping her back home, he took her to his shanty and raped her," Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said, adding, the incident occurred around mid-night. Jitendra had also threatened the girl with dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident, he said. But she narrated her ordeal to her family members following which her brother and some locals went to Jitendra's place and caught him, the officer said. Cattle thief, cop injured in exchange of fire

A suspected cattle thief, hailing from Mewat, and a constable were injured in an exchange of fire in Dwarka here, police said today. The police arrested two cattle thieves, including the injured one, while seven-eight of their accomplices succeeded in escaping following the shootout in the intervening night of March 30 and 31, they said. Police were informed that cows were being loaded in a vehicle in sector 1 of Dwarka and its occupants were pelting with stones the persons trying to stop them. The accused started pelting with stones a Police Control Room van which started chasing them. 3 unidentified men fire dozen rounds on car of property dealer in Gurgaon

A group of three unidentified men fired over a dozen rounds on a car of a property dealer in a bid to extort money from him in Sector 31 area, police said. The incident took place around 10.30 AM. The attackers also left a letter, demanding Rs 60 lakh payment as extortion, they said. According to the police, three attackers came on a car around 11.15 AM and they called the victim, identified as Manish Khattar, to come outside his house. "The accused, in a bid to threaten Khattar, fired several rounds on his car. They threatened him to pay the amount otherwise they would kill him, Sudhir Kumar, SHO of sector 40 police station, said. Bhagalpur violence: No bail for Ashwini Choubey's son

A Bhagalpur court on Saturday rejected the bail plea of Union Minister Ashwini Choubey's son Arijit Shashwat in connection with the communal violence in the district.Earlier, during the hearing, the court had reserved its order on the bail plea of Arijit Shashwat and nine other accused in the case.On March 27, Shashwat had filed an anticipatory bail petition two days after a Bhagalpur court issued a warrant of arrest against him in connection with the clashes in Nathnagar on March 17.The violence broke out during a procession led by Shashwat in Nathnagar that the Bharatiya Navvarsh Jagran Samiti organised to mark the Hindu New Year.Choubey and other local Bharatiya Janata Party leaders later claimed that the district administration had allowed the rally and also denied that provocative slogans were shouted.Choubey was elected from the Buxar Lok Sabha seat in 2014. Kamala Mills fire case: No bail for Mojo's Bistro co-owner

A sessions court in Mumbai today rejected the bail application of Yug Tulli, a co-owner of Mojo's Bistro pub, in the Kamla Mills Compound fire case. A massive fire swept through two roof-top pubs, Mojo's Bistro and 1 Above, located in Kamala Mills Compound in central Mumbai, on December 29 last year, resulting in the death of 14 persons. Judge A L Yawalkar rejected Tulli's application, special prosecutor Prakash Shetty said. Tulli had surrendered before the police in January after the court rejected his anticipatory bail application. The police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the owners of the two pubs, the owners of Kamala Mills Compound and some civic officials. It is alleged that flying embers from hookah, served illegally at Mojo's Bistro, started the blaze, and illegal alterations at both the pubs aggravated the tragedy While a charge sheet has been filed, the trial is yet to start.

Man sentenced to life term for rape in Raj

A Special Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe court in Bundi today sentenced a man to life term for raping his employer's wife in 2013. Special judge Alka Gupta sentenced Surendra Singh Rajput (40), a resident of Luhariya village of Bundi district, to life term for raping the 45-year-old woman, Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Mahendra Sharma said. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on him which were ordered to be awarded to the victim as compensation, he said. Following the crime in August 2013, the rapist was booked under IPC sections on the charges of trespassing to commit offence and rape and provisions of the SC/ST Act as the victim was from SC/ST community. The APP said the court ordered to give Rs 50,000 out of the total fine of Rs 60,000 to the victim as compensation. The convict used to work as a driver for the victim's husband. Once when her husband was away, he broke into his house in Nainwa road area of Bundi city and raped her, the APP further said.

HC restrains AP-based pharmacy from using trademark of Apollo hospitals

The Madras High Court has directed an Andhra Pradesh-based pharmacy to desist from using the trademark words 'Apollo' in any manner. While allowing the civil suit filed by Apollo hospitals here, Justice M Sundar also refused to grant Rs 25 lakh damages claimed by the plaintiff for the trademark infringement by Sri Sai Apollo pharmacy in the neighbouring state. "For the present, no evidence has been let in to show quantification of damages of Rs 25 lakh and therefore, that limb of the prayer is not acceded to," the judge observed. However, the judge clarified that Apollo hospitals was at liberty to move a separate application for damages based on the present order. When the plea came up recently, Apollo hospitals claimed that they have valid rights over 12 different trademarks in seven different classes with the mark 'Apollo.' Provide info of crime victims lodged in woman protection homes: HC to UP govt

The Allahabad High court has directed the state government to provide information of minor girl victims of any crime who are lodged in the Woman Protection Homes across Uttar Pradesh. The Lucknow bench of the court has also asked as to how many of such victims have turned adult during their stay in the protection homes. It further asked the government to place before it the policy for release of such victims from the protection homes after they attain majority because a major girl cannot be housed in protection homes against her will. A division bench of justices D K Upadhyay and D K Singh passed the order on March 28 during a course of hearing of a Habeas Corpus petition seeking release of a girl from the protection home in Ayodhya. Jail inmate commits suicide in Rajasthan

A man serving one year jail term after being convicted in a cheque dishonour case, allegedly committed suicide in the toilet of prisoners' ward in New Medical College hospital here today, an official said. Nawab Pathan (32), an inmate of Kota central jail, was admitted to the hospital on March 27 as he was suffering from some ailments. This afternoon, he was found hanging at the toilet, Jailor Yogesh Kumar Teiji said. Pathan was convicted in the cheque dishonour case this January, the official said. No suicide note was found. A case has been registered in the matter and postmortem would be conducted tomorrow, Teiji said.

Palghar: Cases of extortion against local leaders of NCP,

Police in Palghar district have registered cases against ten persons including local leaders of the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP for allegedly extorting money from builders. Vasai-Virar NCP chief Govind Gunjalkar was arrested in one of these cases last night. Corporator and former deputy district chief of the Shiv Sena, Dhananjay Gawde, and BJP Yuva Morcha district chief Arun Singh have also been named as accused, and police had launched a manhunt for them, officials said. HC rejects discharge plea of EPFO official in graft case

The Madras High Court has dismissed a discharge petition filed by an official of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), arrested by the CBI in January last, in connection with a graft case involving a private educational institution here. Justice G Jayachandran passed the order on the plea by G Elumalai, enforcement officer of EPFO, challenging the order of the XIII additional special court for CBI cases, Chennai. The court had on December 28, 2017 rejected his discharge plea. On January 15, the CBI arrested Elumalai along with the prime accused, E S Durga Prasad, Regional Commissioner of EPFO in an alleged bribery case involving the Saveetha Group of Institutions. Five others were also arrested in this connection. The prosecution case was that Durga Prasad had allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh as illegal gratification for favouring the group,which runs a university and some colleges in Tamil Nadu. Two SIMI men get life sentence in 2010 dacoity case

A special NIA court here today awarded life sentence to two members of the banned outfit, Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), for looting gold jewellery worth Rs 1.46 crore and cash from a branch of Manappuram Finance Ltd. The special judge for National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases, Girish Dixit, convicted Abu Faizal (28) and Ikrar Sheikh (36) under IPC sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 395 (dacoity) and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The NIA had named eight persons as accused in the case. Two of the accused, Sharad Singh (35) and Shailendra Mehto (44), are absconding, while Jakir Hussain (28), Sheikh Mujeeb Ahmed (25), Mohammed Aslam (23) and Mohammed Aizazuddin (28) were killed in alleged encounters with the police. The accused had committed the dacoity at a branch of Manappuram Finance Ltd on Bhopal's Hamidia Road on August 23, 2010, and made off with gold jewellery worth Rs 1.46 crore and Rs 41,000 in cash.

Missing woman, girl found in Udhampur

A missing woman and a teenage girl, who went missing last month, have been found by police in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, an official said. Based on a complaint of family members, a missing report was lodged at police station Majalta about a woman going missing on March 7, the police official said. Police formed a team and conducted raids in different places and found the woman from the Khoon area of Udhampur district. She was later handed over to her family after proper legal formalities, he said. Another teenage girl went missing from the Tikri area of the district on February 27. She was handed over to the family after legal procedure, the official said.
