Centre to file review petition in SC against SC/ST Act ruling

The Centre will file a review petition in the Supreme Court over its recent ruling on Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) Act, said Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment Thawarchand Gehlot on Friday.He tweeted that "the Government of India is committed to the welfare of scheduled castes and tribes. Police seeks reply from Google about e-mail sent to CBSE chairperson

The Delhi Police's Crime Branch on Friday sought a reply from Google about an e-mail that was sent to the CBSE chairperson Anita Karwal in connection with the paper leak case.An e-mail was sent to the CBSE chairperson from a Gmail ID with images of handwritten questions papers.Meanwhile, the crime branch identified over 10 WhatsApp groups, each having 50-60 members in connection with the same.The papers of the economics exam of Class XII, held on March 26 and mathematics exam of Class X, held on March 28 were leaked on social media hours before the examination.Soon after this, CBSE announced re-examination and a police investigation into the matter.Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar also took cognisance of the matter and assured strict action against the culprits.As of now, the Delhi Police has interrogated over 30 people, including students and teachers of private coaching centers in connection with the matter.

Man sentenced to death in rape-murder case

A fast track court in Baghpat has awarded death sentence to a 27-year-old man for raping and murdering a six-year-old girl in 2012. Judge Shakti Putra awarded death penalty to Anil Kashyap last evening and also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000. He was held guilty under sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), according to government lawyer Subhash Tomar. The girl was raped on December 9, 2012, by Kashyap and her body was found in a sugarcane field. He was arrested three days later, he said.

Tripura to set up crime wing of state police

The Tripura government has decided to set up a "well-equipped" crime branch under the state police to deal with unlawful activities such as drug and narcotics peddling. The new wing will be modeled after Delhi Police's crime branch, Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath told reporters here today. "The state cabinet has cleared a proposal to form a well-equipped police wing to arrest crime in the state and restore the rule of land, as was promised in the BJP's election manifesto," he said. Anybody found having links with drug peddlers or mafia gangs will be punished, Nath said. "We will seek expert opinion from Delhi and Mumbai to build the unit," he said. Railway guard held for 'flashing' at college student

A 41-year-old railway guard was arrested for allegedly flashing at a college student at Ghansoli station in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, a senior GRP official said today. The accused, A K Singh, yesterday surrendered before the Government Railway Police (GRP) at the Vashi Railway Police Station after which he was placed under arrest, said Samadhan Pawar, Deputy Commissioner, GRP Mumbai. Singh, who was on duty at Ghansoli, allegedly indecently exposed himself to the college student on Tuesday while she was walking on the platform, Pawar said. Following a complaint, a case of molestation was registered against the guard, the official said. Singh was later produced before a court in Bhoiwada in Mumbai, which granted him bail, he said.

China's 'Jack the Ripper' sentenced to death

A serial killer dubbed China's "Jack the Ripper" for the way he mutilated several of his 11 female victims was sentenced to death today, three decades after the first murder. Gao Chengyong, 53, robbed, raped and ultimately murdered 11 female victims more than a decade ago, prosecutors from Baiyin City in northwest Gansu province said. He was found guilty by the Baiyin City Intermediate People's Court and handed death sentences for both robbery and intentional homicide, and lesser sentences for rape and dishonouring corpses. Gao targeted young women wearing red and followed them home, often cutting their throats and mutilating their bodies, according to state media reports. The youngest victim was eight years old. CBSE leaks: 10 more people questioned, police 'interacts' with board's controller of exams

The Delhi Crime Branch has questioned 10 more people and "interacted" with the CBSE controller of examinations in connection with the leak of the board's Class 10 mathematics and Class 12 economic papers, police said today. The CBSE has also said that its chairperson had received an e-mail about the Class 10 mathematics paper being leaked a day before the exam, police officials said. The mathematics and economics exams were held on March 28 and March 26 respectively. The police since yesterday have questioned 35 people, including a coaching centre's owner, 18 students and some tutors, in connection with the case, an official privy to the investigations said. Yesterday, police personnel also "interacted with the CBSE controller of examination for two hours" to understand the process of conducting exams, he said. Traffic constable run over by speeding bus

Bank manager arrested

The branch manager of a nationalised bank was arrested in Ganjam district for alleged misappropriation of crop loan, police said today. N Naik (59), branch manager of the State Bank of India, Sorada, who was arrested yesterday, had allegedly committed the fraud when he was manager of the bank's Karchuli branch four years ago. On October 4, 2017, Udaya Nath Swain, the current manager of SBI, Karchuli branch, lodged an FIR with the police against Naik for misappropriating about Rs 7.50 lakh on fake documents for crop loans.

Jailed UP MLAs barred from attending Assembly sessions

TN Govt to re-approach SC for CMB formation

As the Centre failed to set up a Cauvery Management Board (CMB) within the six-weeks time frame directed by the Supreme Court, which ended on Thursday, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister, D. Jayakumar, on Friday stated that they will re-approach the apex court."We are discussing our next course of action and are sure about approaching the Supreme Court again, as the Center failed to implement the CMB as per Supreme Court's orders," said Jayakumar.The apex court on February 16, had ordered the Central Government to set up the CMB and the Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee within six weeks. However, the Centre has not formed the CMB as yet.The apex court had also increased Karnataka's share of Cauvery water thus reducing Tamil Nadu's share to 177.25 thousand million cubic feet.

35-yr-old farmer found dead in Muzaffarnagar

A 35-year-old farmer, who was missing for the last four days, was found dead in a field in Meghakheri village here in Uttar Pradesh, police said today Beijendra Singh's body was found yesterday in an area under the New Mandi police station. He was missing since March 26, they said. There were injury marks of the body. The post mortem report is awaited, police said. The matter is being investigated.

UP: Youth thrashed for asking to return borrowed money

Robbers loot passengers of Ambala-bound train soon after it leaves Nizamuddin station

Four armed robbers looted valuables from passengers of an Ambala-bound train early today, soon after it departed from the Hazrat Nizamuddin station here, officials said. The incident took place around 4 am on the Nizamuddin-Ambala passenger train when it stopped in an area between the station and Tilak Bridge. The train had left Nizamuddin at 3:56 am, they said. "Four robbers armed with knives threatened 12 to 15 passengers travelling in the train's general coach and decamped with their valuables such as mobile phones," Northern Railway spokesperson Nitin Chowdhary said. "The robbery took place when the train stopped at Nizamuddin-Tilak Bridge. One person suffered minor injuries, rest of the passengers are fine," he said. 4 of a family, including infant girl, killed in accident in UP

Four members of a family, including a 10-year-old boy and his infant sister, were killed after their rickshaw was hit by a car on the Meerut-Karnal highway here, police said today. The accident took place last evening near Loi village. Rajendra (35), Rekha (32), their son Savan and three-month-old daughter Payal were killed in the incident, police said, adding that the car's driver is at large. In Shamli district, Salim Khan (38), his wife Naseeba (26) and their 12-year-old son Mujib were injured after their scooter was hit by a small truck on the Chosana Road last night, police said. They were admitted to a local hospital, they said.

1-year RI for 2 Bangladeshi women for staying in India without passport

A court here has awarded one-year rigorous imprisonment to two Bangladeshi women for staying in India without valid travel documents. Assistant Sessions Judge H B Shelke also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the convicts Mumtaz Rasul Shaikh (45) and Munira Akhtar Husein (30) of Nodaile district in Bangladesh. The duo was convicted under relevant sections of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules 1950. Sleuths of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell had apprehended the women from Mira Road on July 15, 2017, Additional Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar told the court. They resided in slum colonies and worked as labourers. They did not possess any valid travel documents, the court was told. After hearing arguments, the Judge convicted the two women and sentenced them to one year rigorous imprisonment on March 28.

The Central crime branch on Thursday arrested Postcard News founder Mahesh Vikram Hegde for allegedly running fake and communally sensitive news.The Bengaluru Police confirmed that Hegde was arrested for a story that was carried on March 18 claiming that a Jain monk got injured after being attacked by a Muslim youth.
