College girl raped

A student of a local college here was allegedly raped by a 24-year-old man two months ago, police said today. The accused was arrested yesterday following the complaint lodged by the girl on March 26, more than two months after the commission of the crime. As per the FIR, the incident occurred on January 24 when the accused offered her a lift on a motorbike while she was on her way back home after attending a function in the college. On the way, he halted the bike and dragged her in a deserted spot and committed the crime. He had also clicked her in nude, they said. The rape survivor had preferred to keep mum because of social stigma, but the accused sought physical favours from her. As she opposed, the accused had threatened her he would post her nude pictures on social media. Finally, the victim lodged an FIR on Monday, they said. The accused Smruti Ranjan Samal, a college dropout, is currently in jail custody.

Delegates to urge pres to review changes in SC/ST Act

A delegation of Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Commission is due to meet President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday to request for a review petition to be filed in Supreme Court regarding the changes it made to the Prevention of Atrocities (SC/ST Act) Act 1989.The court had passed an order earlier with a view to prevent misuse of certain provisions in the act.The bench comprising of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and Uday Umesh Lalit noted that to avoid a case of false implication of an innocent, a preliminary inquiry will be done by the Deputy Superintendent of Police to verify the authenticity of the allegations for prosecution under the Atrocities Act.The top court further observed that a government official cannot be prosecuted on mere allegations of committing an offense under the Act without the sanction of the appointing authority.

62-yr-old bizman held for 'sexual harassment'

A 62-year-old Pune businessman has been arrested on a complaint of sexual harassment lodged against him by a cabin crew member of the Air Vistara, Lucknow-Delhi flight on March 24, the police said today. Confirming the incident, an Air Vistara spokesperson said, "We have reported the matter to the police and other relevant authorities. An FIR has been registered and the investigation is on. Air Vistara does not tolerate abusive or unruly behaviour by passengers that puts safety of its staff and customers at risk or compromises their dignity, the spokesperson added. Accused Rajeev Vasant Dani was arrested by the Delhi police from the airport itself after the complaint was lodged. Wife set husband on fire

A woman allegedly burnt her husband to death as he used to thrash her and their children in inebriated state at Saruabili in Jajpur district, police said today. Though the incident took place on Sunday night, the 36-year-old man succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Cuttack on Monday night, they said. Subash Singh, a driver by profession, came home drunk and misbehaved with his elder daughter. When the daughter opposed his indecent behaviour, he beat her up. Singhs wife and another daughter came to the rescue of the girl. Singh then thrashed his wife and the children, they said. The wife and children of Singh overpowered him and tied his hands and legs. Later, his wife poured kerosene on him and set him ablaze, they said. Singh raised alarm after he was set on fire and the neighbours rushed and doused the flame. Two held for carrying venison

Two persons were arrested for allegedly carrying venison steaks in Mjhedabri tea estate area in Alipurduar district, forest officials said today. Acting on an information by locals, forest officials intercepted a truck in the tea estate area yesterday. A sniffer dog was pressed into service and it entered a house where the venison steaks were found to have been cooked. A dagger was also found in the spot. Two persons were arrested.

Man gets 2-year RI each in three cases of power theft

A Thane court has sentenced a 45-year-old businessman, running three engineering units in the Mumbra township here, to two years of rigorous imprisonment each in three cases of power theft. Additional Sessions Judge P P Jadhav awarded Raju Shirwadkar two years jail term each in three different orders, pertaining to three cases of power theft filed against the accused. The court imposed a fine of Rs 15.3 lakh, stipulating that Rs 10.18 lakh out of it be paid to the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB). Additional Public Prosecutor Vivek G Kadu told the court that Shirwadkar ran three engineering units at Uttarshiv in Mumbra. The MSEB officials conducted surprise checks at the three units on December 5, 2005 and found that the electricity meters installed there had been tampered, the prosecutor said. SC give verdict on a plea seeking inquiry into Mahatma Gandhi's assassination

The Supreme Court will on Wednesday pronounce judgment on a petition seeking an inquiry into the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.The PIL was filed by an I-T professional, Dr Pankaj Kumudchandra Phadnis in October 2017.The apex court had asked former Additional Solicitor General Amarendra Sharan to assist the court as amicus curiae in the case.As per reports, Phadnis' previous petition, seeking reopening of the Gandhi murder case, was dismissed by a high court earlier.Dr Phadnis, in his petition, claimed that Gandhi's death should be probed, as there was still a complete myth about the fourth bullet being fired by the convict."The matter should be re-investigated and should have a thorough probe," Dr Phadnis in his petition claimed.

SC dismisses plea seeking re-probe into Mahatma assassination

The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea seeking a re-investigation into the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. A bench of Justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao, which heard the matter, dismissed the petition filed by Mumbai-based Pankaj Phadnis from Abhinav Bharat. The apex court, which reserved its verdict on March 6, had made it clear that it would not go by "sentiments" but rely on legal submissions to decide on the petition. The apex court had said the plea seeking retrial of the case was based on academic research but that could not form the basis to reopen the matter which happened years ago. The petitioner had questioned the 'three bullet theory' relied upon by various courts to hold the conviction of Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte, who were hanged. He had contended that there was need to examine whether there was a fourth bullet, which was fired by someone other than Godse. 4 arrested for enabling cheating in SSC exam

INX media: CBI to move plea to record Peter Mukerjea's statement before court

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to move a plea in a special CBI court on Wednesday seeking permission to record the statement of former media baron Peter Mukerjea before the court in connection with the INX media case.The permission to record the statement will be filed under Section 164 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).Earlier on Mar 26, a Delhi Court had sent Peter Mukerjea to CBI custody till March 31 after the agency sought five-day custody of the former media baron.INX Media Ltd, which was owned by Mukerjea, had allegedly paid bribes to get a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval which was facilitated by former finance minister P. 5.27 lakhs Fair Price Shops (FPSs) are operational across the country

Public Distribution System (PDS) is operated under the joint responsibility of the Central and State/UT Governments. Central Govt. is responsible for procurement, allocation and transportation of foodgrains upto the designated depots of the FCI. The operational responsibility for allocation and distribution of foodgrains within the States/UTs, identification of eligible beneficiaries/families, issuance of ration cards to them and supervision and monitoring of functioning of Fair Price Shops (FPSs) rest with the concerned State/UT Government. Instructions have been issued to States/UTs and Food Corporation of India (FCI) to ensure supply of good quality foodgrains under PDS. Therefore, as and when complaints are received by the Government from individuals and organizations as well as through press reports, they are sent to State/UT Governments concerned for inquiry and appropriate action.

UN chief Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the deaths of two journalists in India and the violence against mediapersons across the globe. Man arrested over sending suspicious packages to military installations

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a man, suspected of sending suspicious packages to the US military installations and intelligence facilities in the Washington D.C. area.According to CNN, the dubious packages were sent to the FBI, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Fort Belvoir, Fort McNair and a Naval Support Facility in Dahlgren, Virginia.Over 10 devices were sent to various DC-area facilities and all the devices were very crude and involved black powder, the report said, citing a law enforcement official as saying.The official added that these devices would not have caused fatalities had they gone off.Investigators are still trying to determine the man's motive for allegedly sending the suspicious packages with explosive materials in them. Man arrested in suspicious packages sent to military sites

Authorities near Seattle have arrested a man suspected of sending suspicious packages to multiple military installations in the Washington, DC, region, the FBI said today, warning that he may have mailed other "destructive devices" that have not yet been found. The packages were similarly designed and contained black powder along with rambling, nonsensical notes similar to those the man has been known to send in the past, according to a US official who was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation and did so on condition of anonymity. The FBI identified the man as Thanh Cong Phan, 43. He was arrested late Monday at his home in Everett, Washington and was set to appear in federal court Tuesday afternoon. A one-and-a-half-year-old boy was mowed down by a mini truck in southeast Delhi's Jaitpur today, police said. The boy was playing on the road outside his residence when the vehicle hit him. The driver fled from the spot leaving the vehicle behind, the police added. The toddler was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, they said.
