A 37-year-old woman from Kazakhstan was allegedly raped by two men in south Delhi, police said today. The woman filed a police complaint alleging rape yesterday against one of her acquaintances and his friend, they said. The two accused who are Afghan nationals were subsequently arrested, they added.
The Delhi Police today exhumed the body of a carpenter after his family alleged that he was poisoned by his wife who had an extra-marital affair. The body was exhumed from a graveyard in Mongolpuri. His relatives claimed that he had confronted his cousin who allegedly was in a relationship with his wife before he fell unconscious, police said. They said so far no case has been registered and the autopsy report is awaited.
A day after television journalist Sandeep Sharma was mowed down by a truck here, the Madhya Pradesh government said it will recommend a CBI probe into his death, an official said. Sharma, who worked for a news channel in Bhind, had complained to the district administration about threats to his life after he carried out a sting operation on the illicit sand mining. Meanwhile, the driver of the truck, which ran over the journalist, was arrested late last night, the police said. The 35-year-old journalist was talking on his phone when the truck, used to ferry sand, ran over him yesterday, the police said. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today directed the relevant officials to recommend a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into Sharma's death, an official of the state Public Relations Department said. An FIR was lodged on Tuesday against Station House Officer (SHO) of Delhi Cantonment Police Station for allegedly molesting a woman photojournalist on March 23.The journalist was covering the protest by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students, when the SHO Vidyadhar Singh misbehaved with her.He has been charged under section 354 A (sexual harassment) of Indian Penal Code.Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (PRO) Madhur Verma on Monday said a vigilance inquiry was ordered against the officer after the complaint and the report was submitted.The SHO claimed he mistook the journalist for a protester and tried to push her away.Police said disciplinary action would be initiated against him for unprofessional behaviour.Further vigilance inquiry in the matter is underway.
A khap panchayat in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday opposed the Supreme Court ruling on their interference in the marriage of two consenting adults.Reacting to the Supreme Court's verdict, Thamba Khap president Yashpal Choudhary told ANI that the panchayat will oppose the apex court's verdict as 'sagotra (intra-clan) marriage' is not allowed as per Vedas."We will oppose the Supreme Court's decision. Aam Aadmi Party MLA Narayan Dutt Sharma has been booked for allegedly threatening and abusing a woman officer working in a project under the Department of Women and Child Development, police said today. The woman officer has alleged that the MLA abused her during a phone conversation on March 17, the police said, adding an FIR was registered in the incident. Last year, a case was registered against the MLA for allegedly assaulting an assistant engineer along with 10-12 labourers who had gone to carry out a demolition programme at a school.

A 13-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide with her parents claiming that she was upset as a teacher had scolded her after finding chits in her answer sheet, police said. Police said that the girl hung herself from the ceiling of her house in suburban Powai yesterday evening after returning from her school in Kurla. "Family members, who entered the room in the nick of time, managed to rush her to hospital but she died while under treatment," an official said. Police said that no suicide note was found but her parents alleged that she took the step because a teacher had scolded her after finding chits in her answer sheet. "When the girl was submitting her exam paper at her school in Kurla yesterday, the teacher found some chits in the victim's answer sheet. She allegedly accused the girl of cheating and scolded her," the official said. Officials said that a case of accidental death had been registered and further investigations were underway.
A girl suffered severe burns when a boy allegedly set her on fire near here, police said today. In her complaint, she said the boy, known to her, had an argument at her residence and in a fit of rage, set her ablaze by pouring kerosene. The girl suffered 70 per cent burns and her condition is said to be serious, they said. Both are minors, police said, adding, a case of attempt to murder has been registered.
The Law Commission today shrunk its ambit of consideration of the contentious Uniform Civil Code by asking the public not to send their views on three ways of marriages practiced in the Islam, saying the issue is now pending before the Supreme Court. A few days ago, while issuing a fresh appeal to the general public to send views on UCC, it had said the stakeholders should not send their responses on instant triple talaq as a bill seeking to criminalise it was pending in the Rajya Sabha. A 17-year-old girl was allegedly burnt alive by her boyfriend here on Tuesday.The police said the accused, identified as Sohail, went to the girl's residence and poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.The girl was immediately shifted to the Osmania Hospital for treatment where the doctors said she has received 70% burn injuries. The accused has also received burn injuries.According to police, Sohail, who knew the victim for past one year, was upset that girl's parents, after finding about his relationship with her, have decided to marry the teenager to some other person.A case has been registered against Sohail under section 307 (attempt to murder) the Indian Penal Code.Further investigation is underway.
Three Indian-origin men along with their two Pakistani accomplices have been sentenced to a total of 95 years in jail by a UK court for running an international drug-smuggling racket to "flood the streets of Britain" with more than 10 million pounds of illegal Class A drugs. The five men were part of a Leicester-based organised crime gang involved in importing heroin and cocaine hidden in purpose-built secret compartments in furniture, industrial bolts and children's clothes, the Leicestershire Police said. Jagdish Patel, 51, was found guilty of conspiracy to import and supply cocaine and heroin, and was sentenced to 25 years; Ravindra Modha, 55, was found guilty of conspiracy to import cocaine and was sentenced to 16 years; and Paulvinder Randhawa, 47, admitted conspiracy to supply heroin and was sentenced to 18 years. A local court today sentenced two persons to 20 years in jail for gangraping a Dalit woman five years ago. Additional sessions judge B P Pujara sentenced Sultan Mekwa and Imtiaz Sheikh to 20 years in jail, while acquitted two others for lack of evidence. "The two were convicted under IPC section 376 (2). The court also fined them Rs 10,000 each. This amount will be given to the victim," public prosecutor Sameer Khira said. The crime took place on November 19, 2013, when the victim and her relative were abducted by Mekwa, Sheikh and two others, who took them to an isolated place near IP Mission School. Mekwa and Sheikh then gangraped the woman.
Is there a need for sanction to prosecute a public servant accused of corruption before initiating investigation under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) -- this question was today referred by the Supreme Court to a larger bench for consideration. A two-judge bench of justices J Chelameswar and S K Kaul passed the order on the issue which was raised in a plea that alleged that a former chief minister of Rajasthan and other public servants hatched a conspiracy for own vested interests and caused loss to the exchequer in tender procedure of eight drinking water projects in 2008. A magisterial court had earlier refused to order investigation under section 156 (3) of the CrPC due to the absence of sanction to prosecute public servants. The Kerala High Court today refused to stay trial of the over two decades old Sister Abhaya murder case. A plea seeking the stay was filed by Father Dr Thomas Kottoor and Sister Sephy, the first and the third accused respectively. Justice Sunil Thomas refused to stay the trial, set to begin in a special CBI court in Thiruvananthapuram. The High Court also directed the CBI to produce the case diary, FIR and other documents related to the case. Kottoor and Sephy moved the High Court after the special CBI court rejected the discharge petitions filed by them. The CBI court, while dismissing the petitions on March 7, had observed that there was sufficient ground for presuming that the two had committed offences punishable under IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destroying evidences),read with Section 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). The Supreme Court today appointed Justice Jawad Rahim, judicial member of National Green Tribunal (NGT), as the acting chairperson of the green panel. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said that the new acting chairperson will discharge his duties until a regular appointment is made and will take part in selection process of other members of the NGT. "Justice Rahim shall discharge the duties of Chairperson (of NGT) for all purposes, including participating in the selection process for filing up vacancies of members, until a regular appointment of a new Chairperson is made," the bench said. Terming as "agonising" the effect that honour killings have on society, the Supreme Court today laid down preventive, remedial and punitive measures, including discouraging any illegal assemblies of khap panchayats and providing security to couples and their families, to deal with the issue till a law is framed on it. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said that the Constitution and the laws "do not countenance" such acts by the khap panchayats, stressing that remedial steps would include lodging of an FIR, investigation of the crime with promptitude, as well as booking all participants of the illegal assembly, without any exception.
