3 illegal arms supplier arrested

Three alleged gun runners were arrested near the Commonwealth Village on the NH-24 and 21 sophisticated country-made pistols were seized from them, police said today. The accused were apprehended while trying to deliver the illegal arms to a local criminal last Saturday, P S Kushwah, DCP (Special Cell), said. Acting on a tip-off, a dedicated team of the Special Cell working against illegal arms supplier laid a trap near the Commonwealth village link road and arrested three men from there, he said. A search of the trio was conducted and 21 illegal sophisticated pistols were seized from them in Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh, he said. An interrogation of the accused revealed that the gang was active in smuggling of illegal arms since 2012, Kushwah said. A case under the Arms Act provision has been registered at the Special Cell police station and further investigation is on, he added.

Army jawan dies in UP road accident

An Army jawan today died and his two sons were seriously injured when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a tree on Moradabad-Farrukhabad highway early today, police said. Anil Kumar (50), a resident of Moradabad, died on the spot, while his sons Ajay and Aditya were seriously wounded, Alapur police station in-charge RP Sharma said. While trying to save a cyclist, Kumar lost control over the vehicle and rammed it into the tree, Sharma said. Kumar's sons have been referred to Bareilly for treatment, police said.

Cambodia court drops pornography charges against foreigners

A Cambodian court has dropped pornography charges against nine of the 10 foreigners arrested last month at a pool party in the tourist town of Siem Reap, an official said today. The group was detained for around two weeks on charges of producing pornographic materials to promote the event at a private villa in the city flanking Cambodias famous Angkor Wat temple ruins. Police, who broke up the party on January 25, initially accused the foreigners of "singing and dancing pornographically". "The court has dropped charges against the nine foreigners released on bail. Only one British national will face trial," court spokesman Yin Srang told AFP, declining to elaborate. Their lawyer Ouch Sopheaktra said the Briton was held because he was accused of renting the villa and organising the pool party. Iraq frees suspected French jihadist who served sentence

An Iraqi court ordered the release of a suspected French jihadist sentenced Monday to seven months in prison for entering the country illegally, saying she had already served her time. Melina Bougedir, 27, was arrested last summer in former Islamic State group stronghold Mosul with her four children, three of whom have been repatriated to France. Speaking in Arabic, she told the court that she had entered Iraq in October 2015 from Syria. She said that her French husband was killed as Iraqi forces battled to oust the jihadist group from Mosul, which was recaptured last July after three years of IS rule.

CVC meets PNB, fin min officials in connection with Rs 11,400 cr fraud

Central Vigilance Commissioner K V Chowdary today met senior PNB and Finance Ministry officials in connection with the Rs 11,400 crore fraud case, involving jewellery designer Nirav Modi and being probed by the CBI. The meeting, which started at 11 AM at the Commissions office, lasted for more than two hours, official sources said. The officials from Punjab National Bank (PNB) are understood to have shared the details of the action taken by them to deal with the fraud, they said. They also shared details of the action taken by the management against the officials found allegedly involved in it, the sources said. Besides Chowdhary, Vigilance Commissioner T M Bhasin and officials from the Finance Ministry also attended the meeting, they said. NCDRC asks Unitech Ltd to refund Rs 29 L to home buyer

The apex consumer commission has asked real estate major Unitech Ltd to refund Rs 29.5 lakh to a home buyer for not delivering timely possession of an allotted flat. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission also directed the firm to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 to Gurgaon resident Manish Daryani for deficiency in rendering services. I am satisfied that the delay in construction of the flats allotted to the complainant (Daryani) did not happen on account of reasons beyond the control of the opposite party (Unitech). Therefore, the said opposite party was deficient in rendering services to the complainant by not delivering timely possession of the flat allotted to him, presiding member of the commission, Justice V K Jain, said. PNB fraud: Petition filed in SC demanding SIT probe

Molestation case against BJP leader in Madhya Pradesh

Police in Madhya Pradesh have registered a case against a BJP leader, who enjoyed the status of minister of state as the vice-chairman of a government body, for allegedly molesting an acid attack survivor. Taking serious view of the matter, the state government today removed Rajendra Namdeo, the accused, from his post as the the vice-chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Rajya Silai Kala Mandal. He enjoyed the status of minister of state owing to the post. The order to remove Namdeo from his post was issued by Rajiv Nigam, deputy secretary, urban administration and housing department. State BJP president Nandkumar Singh Chouhan suspended Namdeo from the party for six months, after Hanumanganj police station here registered the case of molestation against Namdeo, who hails from Maihar in Satna district, last night. In the complaint, the 25-year-old woman alleged that in November last year, Namdeo called her to a hotel room near the Bhopal railway station and tried to molest her .

Bihar courts continue to battle huge pendency of cases

Litigants face harrowing time in Bihar, with over 16 lakh cases pending in subordinate judiciary due to a whopping 45 per cent vacancies of judicial officers. The situation is no better in the Patna High Court, where 1,45,110 cases are pending in the absence of sufficient strength of judges. As on February 17, 2018, a total of 16,74,883 cases are pending across the district courts of Bihar while 1,45,110 cases are waiting for adjudication in the Patna High Court, according to National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) website. Of the total number of pending cases at Patna High Court, 16.54 per cent cases have been pending for over 10 years while 30.12 per cent of the cases are lying pending for less than two years. The delay in filling up judicial vacancies is a major reason behind the pending cases, Bihar's Advocate General Lalit Kishore said. Man shot dead at son's wedding

A man was shot dead at his son's wedding in Bihar's Nalanda district, the police said today. The incident occurred at Khanchi Gali locality in Biharsharif police station area yesterday night, Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police Nishit Priya said. Unidentified gunmen fired at the bridegroom's father Ajay Sah after exchange of garlands at the wedding, killing him on the spot. It is not immediately known why Sah was killed, the deputy SP said.

BJP MP booked for rioting, criminal conspiracy

A ruling BJP lawmaker and 27 other people have been booked under various charges, including rioting and criminal conspiracy, following a fracas over a land dispute in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, police said today. Gold, silver jewellery stolen from historic temple

Gold and silver jewellery, and some other articles were allegedly stolen from a historic temple at Saketri in Panchkula district of Haryana, the police said today. A CCTV footage showed that at least six thieves broke open the lock of the Shiv temple and stole the jewellery and other items last night, Panchkula police said. The exact value of the stolen jewellery and other articles could not be ascertained immediately, they said. Two women found dead in Madurai district

Two women, aged around 40, were found dead under mysterious circumstances at Nathamvilakku in the district here early today, police said. The incident occurred around 2 AM today when the women, Azhagupandi and Priya were going (on foot) to a nearby Primary Health Care Centre to visit their friend, who was admitted for medical treatment, they said. 14-yr-old Dalit girl gangraped in UP

A 14-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly abducted and gangraped in a village under Atarra police station area here, the police said today. The girl had gone out on Saturday night to attend nature's call when two youth allegedly abducted and raped her in an animal shed in the village, SHO Durgvijay Singh said. According to a complaint lodged by the victim's mother, the girl was found in an unconscious state the next morning, the police official said. On the basis of the complaint, one of the accused has been taken into police custody and was being questioned, the SHO said, adding the girl has been sent for medical examination.
