News editor booked for rape

The Delhi police on Saturday arrested the editor-in-chief of a Hindi news channel for allegedly raping a woman employee.A case was filed at Delhi's Tughlak Road police station by the victim on February 13.The victim, in her complaint, alleged that she came in contact with Umesh Kumar, the accused, in 2016 when she was staying in Indirapuram and working in Zenetix Gym.In June last year, he called her at his residence and developed a physical relationship with her on the pretext of marriage. On August, he called her to Claridges Hotel where she was sexually assaulted. Later, she got to know that Umesh was a married man.The hotel authorities also confirmed the presence of accused in the hotel as a room was booked in his name.A case has been registered under section 376 and 506 of Indian Panel Code and section 164 Code Of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Pak court announces death sentence for Zainab's rapist

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Pakistan on Saturday awarded four death penalties to the accused in the rape and murder case of a minor girl, Zainab.According to The Express Tribune, the accused Imran Ali was identified through the DNA test as being behind the abduction, rape, and murder of Kasur's 7-year-old.The court concluded the trial within one-week, in accordance with an order of the Lahore High Court (LHC).ATC sentenced Ali to life imprisonment and a separate 7-year term and a fine of Pakistani Rupees 3.1 million.He will also have to pay Rs 1 million as compensation to Zainab's family."In light of the forensic evidence, the DNA reports, photographic test and medical evidence, the court is of the firm view that prosecution has successfully established its case through its own evidence against the accused beyond any shadow of doubt," the 68-page ATC order said.Zainab's case sparked widespread outrage across the country and on social media when her body was recovered from a heap .

Gold smuggler held at Agartala Airport

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Saturday apprehended a Bangladeshi national with gold bars worth Rs 39 lakh at Agartala Airport.At least 12 gold bars weighing about 1302 gms have been recovered from the passenger, who has been identified as Abul Kalam Azad.During the security check at the Agartala Airport, the CISF personnel noticed the presence of metal in a body cavity of a passenger. The said passenger identified as Abul Kalam Azad, who was supposed to travel from Agartala to Kolkata by Indigo flight. He was taken to a separate place for thorough checking, read an official note.Further inquiry revealed that the passenger was carrying gold concealed in his rectum.The passenger and the gold bars have been handed over to the Customs Officials.An investigation is underway.

PNB scam: ED raids Akshat showroom in Raipur

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday conducted raids at Akshat Jewellery showroom in Raipur's Ambuja Mall in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case involving businessmen Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.Jewellery worth Rs one crore was unearthed from the showroom that reportedly belongs to Choksi's relative.Earlier in the day, the ED conducted searches at 21 locations across India in connection with the infamous case.The agency also seized diamonds, gold, precious stones and jewellery worth Rs 25 crore.Diamonds worth Rs 2.30 crore were seized from Gitanjali Group's Nakshatra jewellery showroom in Bhopal.The agency conducted searches at several places linked to Nirav Modi in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gujarat, and seized diamonds, jewellery and gold worth Rs 5,649 crore.The agency has seized properties worth Rs 5,674 crore till now.The raids came after the agency filed a money laundering case against Nirav Modi, his wife Ami, brother Nishal and relative Mehul Choksi on ...

'Screaming Mummy' displayed in Egypt museum

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo has put on display the "Screaming Mummy" of the son of a pharaoh who may have been hanged for plotting his father's murder. Dubbed "the unknown man E", the mummy which is not usually exhibited appears to be of a man who died an agonising death. Egypt's antiquities ministry has said DNA analysis confirmed the mummy was a son of Ramses III, who ruled between 1186 BC and 1155 BC. It showed signs that the man had been hanged and shrouded in sheepskin, which the ancient Egyptians considered impure. Pentawere, the son of Ramses III, was sentenced to hang for his role in the plot, according to an ancient papyrus record of the conspiracy. Pentawere conspired with his mother Tiye, the second wife of Ramses III, to murder the king. It is not clear if Ramses III was killed in the plot, but there are indications that he was stabbed in the neck. Case filed against journalist on rape complaint: Police

A case has been registered by the Delhi Police against a TV channel journalist following a complaint of rape by a woman, a senior Delhi Police officer said tonight. The woman alleged that she came in contact with the man in 2016 and she was offered a job in the channel which she joined in April 2017, Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) B K Singh said. "She alleged that she was raped by the man on June 9 last year at his residence on the pretext of marriage and several times later on," the officer said. The woman claimed that in October last year, she learnt that the man was already married and had two children, Singh said. She filed a complaint against the journalist on February 13 and the case was registered last night at the Tughlak Road police station, the police officer said. Her statement was recorded before a magistrate, Singh said, adding no arrest has been made.

Two gangsters held in Faizabad

Two alleged members of Munna Bajrangi gang were today arrested in a joint operation by the Faizabad and Gorakhpur Police here, a senior police officer said. Abhinav Singh and Dhanesh Yadav of Munna Bajrangi gang were arrested in Amaniganj locality, Faizabad SP (City) Anil Sisodia said. "They had taken contract for killing a district panchayat member, and Singh was also wanted in Dhanbad's Neeraj Singh murder case," he said. Pistols were recovered from the duo, Sisodia said. The two men had an enmity with Zila Panchayat member, who is also a history sheeter, over a land dispute, the SP said.

Bangladeshi held with gold biscuits at Agartala airport

A Bangladeshi was arrested with 12 gold biscuits valued at Rs 39 lakh at Agartala airport this evening, police said. The person hailing from Comilla district of Bangladesh was to board a flight to Kolkata. Police said CISF personnel found the gold biscuits weighing 1.2 kilogram during routine search. The Bangladeshi entered Tripura through Akhaura international check-post near here this afternoon and reached the airport.

Acid injected in man's eyes for eloping with employer's wife

A mob assaulted a man and injected acid in his eyes leaving him blind for allegedly eloping with his employer's wife here following which a person has been arrested in the case, police said today. The assault took place at an eatery in Pipra Chowk late last night in which the man, a driver by profession, was left critically injured, Deputy Superintendent of Police B K Singh said. The 30-year-old man, a resident of Samastipur district, became blind after the incident, doctors attending him at a hospital here said. In a statement before the police, the victim said he used to work as a tractor driver at Barauni village under Teghra police station and started an affair with his employer's wife. 75-year-old woman out on bail killed in Rajasthan

A 75-year-old woman, out on bail in a murder case, was beaten to death with sticks at her house in Rajasthan's Bundi, police said today. Police suspect that the woman, identified as Puran Kour Sikh of Dagariya village in Hindoli area, was beaten to death last night by the relatives of a man she and her family members had allegedly killed. Her body was recovered this morning. It was handed over to her family after a post-mortem, they said. Six people have been for the woman's killing, they said. According to Hindoli police station SHO Laxman Singh, Puran Kour Sikh, her husband and two sons had allegedly killed 70-year-old man Dilbagh Singh in October last year. She was arrested, along with her husband and two sons, in the October murder case. She was released on bail a few days ago. She had planned to stay with her daughter and went home to collect her belongings when she was killed, police said.

Builder, wife held, sent to 7-day police custody in cheating case

The Pune Police today arrested builder D S Kulkarni and his wife Hemanti in a case of cheating in New Delhi this morning following which they were brought here and a court sent them to seven-day police custody. The Bombay High Court had yesterday revoked the interim protection from arrest given to Kulkarni and his wife, accused of duping over 2,500 investors of Rs 230 crore. Kulkarni, a high-profile construction professional popularly known as DSK, and his wife were produced before special EOW judge J T Utpat late evening by the sleuths of the Economic Offences Wing of the Pune Police. While seeking their custody for seven days, public prosecutor Pravin Chavan said Kulkarni's firm collected over Rs 1,000 crore in the form of deposits and unsecured loans, which was "systematically" diverted in "preplanned" manner. HC blames laxity, connivance of officials for Kamala Mills fire tragedy

The fire tragedy at the Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai that claimed 14 lives could not have happened without the connivance of officials in the illegal activities going on there, the Bombay High Court has said. A bench of justices R M Borde and R G Ketkar yesterday ordered the setting up of a three-member independent committee, headed by a retired high court judge, to probe the December 29 fire at 1 Above and Mojos Bistro roof-top restaurants at the Kamala Mills compound. The order came in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by former top cop Julio Ribeiro, seeking a judicial inquiry into the case. Kerala Cricket Association President resigns from post

Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) president B Vinod Kumar today resigned from the post after a probe reportedly found irregularities in matters related to the functioning of the Idukki districtassociation. CRPF officer found dead in stream in J-K

An Assistant Sub-Inspector of the CRPF was today found dead under suspicious circumstances in a stream along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, police said. The body of ASI Harinder Singh, posted with the 177th battalion of the CRPF, was found in the stream at Kelamore in Ramban district, a police official said. He said the officer was posted in Sopore township of north Kashmir's Baramulla district. The ASI was undergoing a course at the Humahama Subsidiary training centre in Srinagar and was reported missing from duty on February 14, the official said. "An autopsy was being conducted by a team of doctors and the body will be handed over to the CRPF after legal formalities," he said.

Police started an inquiry against an Assistant Commissioner of Police here after he slapped a woman accused at a press conference. A video of the incident had gone viral on social media platforms. S Ranga Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Police Begumpet, slapped B Manga alias Padma, who police claimed was a habitual offneder, during a media briefing. A Kerala MP today alleged that the Railway authorities havedropped Malayalam language as the medium of examination for the recruitment to Group D employees to the department.
